A casual restaurant with good happy hour deals for shareable apps! We tried many small dishes during happy hour, with my favorite being the chicken flautas. They were very crispy and came with an addicting sauce. I would definitely skip the street corn next time, it was way too sour and almost inedible. The new chicken wings were also not my favorite, the wings were on the smaller side and they were also too tangy for my taste. I went on a Saturday afternoon for happy hour, and it was pretty empty. Our waiter was great and came around frequently to refill our chips and salsa.

I came here with my son for Taco Tuesday -- $3 for any taco. Choice of meats were beef, chicken, carnitas, and pork with pineapple. The taco bar looked pretty good. A server warms up the tortillas and fills them up with your choice of meat. You can add your toppings. One disappointment was that they don't offer rice as an option for topping. While it looked good I thought everything was a bit dry and salty -- it makes some sense since the meat is on heating dishes for the whole evening. The carnitas weren't dry, of course, but they were pretty salty ... Again, that makes sense, since they're simmering for hours, though it doesn't change the fact they're salty. There are a lot of servers and they're friendly. But service was still pretty slow. Maybe I'll try something from the menu next time. But I'm not doing tacos ... Even though they were cheap.

Very nice location the food is was amazing. And the service Roberto gave us was top notch! He was very attentive, polite and helpful. He went above and beyond, we came for my sister's birthday brunch and Roberto kept making sure everyone was comfortable especially the birthday girl. We had a large party and Roberto made a special accommodations for us to sit all together with plenty of space. The mariachi group was great, plenty of options in the all you can eat brunch, there was something for everyone. Parking is plentiful, and the rest of the staff was also very attentive.

Came here for Thanksgiving brunch and was really happy with our choice. At $43.99 per person for the holiday buffet, it's one of the more affordable options we found - especially for a holiday. The buffet had plenty of variety, so everyone in our group found things they liked. Service was good and the staff was pleasant throughout our meal. Perfect spot if you want to skip the cooking and cleanup but don't want to break the bank. Would definitely consider coming back for future holidays.

El Torito is located off MacArthur Blvd and Michelson Drive across the street from John Wayne Airport. It's a good spot to stop at if you're hungry, you want to avoid the premium prices restaurants inside the airport charge, and you have time for a sit down meal before catching your flight. If half stars were an option, I'd rate them a solid 3.5. I recommend visiting on a Tuesday between 4-9 pm so you can take advantage of both their happy hour menu and Taco Tuesday. At the time of this review, El Torito is serving up street tacos with your choice of chicken, carnitas, al pastor and/or steak for only $3 each! I wouldn't expect the highest quality Mexican food but I will say their food is consistent. They also offer great buffets during the holidays you'll def need to make a reservation ahead of time for. I drove past this place on the way home so made it a point to stop in for a lunch date. I loved that they had table side guacamole so we decided to share that along with a taco platter. The guy brought over the cart to make us the guacamole but will say I was a bit underwhelmed with the flavor. The tacos were okay but the meat was a bit dry so had to add a decent amount of salsa to each of my tacos. Lunch was okay but I don't know if I'd go out of my way to return.

Had to wait 30 mins for our order even though we ordered online ahead of time and arrived at the designated pick up time. We ordered a fiesta taco party pack ($35), came with 2 proteins of my choice (chicken, carnitas) and a table side guac ($12). Their salsa is probably the most bland salsa I've ever had, everything else was pretty flavorless in my opinion. Overall impression, they are edible and very comparable to the taco platter you would get from Costco wholesale for half the price. The $12 table side guac is more like a 1 person portion rather than a shared appetizer size, and it had a half avocado in it, uncrushed. None of the food taste like Mexican or taco... I will mostly not return or recommend this place to anyone. read more

Know before you go: A 4% surcharge will be added to your bill. My bill from El Torito had a surcharge (aka hidden cost). I asked the waitress, "What's this?" She walks over to the hostess desk, grabs a little placard from it, and places it on the table for me to read: EL TORITO IS A LOCAL BUSINESS To help offset increased labor costs due to new local, state, and federal ordinances, a 3.99% surcharge is included on all guest checks. That's bogus. In other words, their published prices aren't the price you'll pay. That left a sour taste in my mouth. I went for Happy Hour, and the overall price was competitive, but it's false advertising to prominently display your happy hour deals and then charge a higher price. read more

The food was good. The service was ok. Parking is ample. We were not happy with the billing. When we received the check, it had a surprise surcharge. When asked about it, the server walked off and brought back a paper sign and dropped it on the table. He did not speak about it. It stated that there is a 3.99% surcharge. We were not notified of this beforehand, and ordered items from the table advertisement which did not include this information. Our first thought was to tell them to remove it. Unfortunately we were in a hurry, and the server seemed to disappear at that point. We left the service charge on the check as his tip. read more

Stopped for a "quick" meal between the airport and the hotel at about 6:30 PM, didn't leave the building until almost 8:30 PM. Waited for a table, waited for a server, waited for drinks, really waited for food, waited for drink refills (they never came), and waited for the check. Restaurant was only half full, but they just really didn't seem to care much and, boy, this restaurant is TIRED. Seems like they haven't done much maintenance since the El Torito heydays of the '80s. Lots of restaurants around, next time we'll drive on by and stop at the next one. read more

enchiladas came uncooked. seems like they have budget cuts. cheese was mexican blend instead of Monterey Jack. the tortillas were raw with just some filling and sauce on top. probably needs health inspection. because not even feeling well today. read more

Haven't been in a while, decided to check out their Taco Tuesday. Everything was top notch, the hostess was very gracious, we were greeted my Caesar, he brought us our drinks promptly. I had the Jalapeños Cucumber Margarita was delicious. Caesar works very efficiently, answered all my questions, offered suggestions We hit the taco bar and they had a nice lady that handmade the tortillas, the different toppings were all made fresh down to the salsa, and you taste the freshness. The happy hour is 3-9 so you have time to get in there and enjoy. Will definitely be back again soon read more

When we walked in Liz welcomed us with a warm smile and confirmed it was happy hour!!from 3pm-9pm EVERY DAY!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?! anyway, they have a great selection of appetizers and entrees. Today we were in for a quick bite before a concert at the fairgrounds, which btw are very close. Great vibes and delicious food! We sat at the bar. Miguel served some mean margaritas! Try the flight which gives you a taste of each margarita , the original/ mango and blackberry. The appetizers we got were: guacamole and chips, carnita sliders, salmon tacos and the asada fries. The manager Aide is so Nice , checked on us a few times, made sure everything was going great. I told her I might come back tomorrow for the brunch ...the set up is coming along nicely and I asked what it was for. Brunch is from 9-2pm and they have all the favorites!! GERARDO best server ever. We were celebrating my dads birthday and they definitely made him feel special. We didn't even ask for them to sing and they brought flan out and sang for him and let him keep a hat. Mediocre across the board. Place was clean and we were seated promptly by a friendly hostess. Our server could have been friendlier though. Our drinks took a while despite there not being many people in. But the food arrived quicker than expected. It was "okay" -- not the best, not the worst. Seemed to lack flavor. I went for a Sunday brunch to celebrate a friend's birthday. I was pleasantly surprised by how many delicious food options were available. Our server, Connie, was simply incredible. She went above and beyond to make our experience enjoyable with the most accommodating, positive attitude throughout. I highly recommend this location. Not only for its awesome food selection, but especially for the outstanding service! Connie went above and beyond. Even handled some of the "difficult" friends at our table with kindness, grace, and positive attitude. Her commitment to service is something I never see anymore these days. I do not understand why you offer reservations if you will not actually honor the system. Around 8 pm, we asked if we could order as they had only brought water. Listen I understand. You're closing soon. You only had 1 server for the entire restaurant the weekend of Valentines. You have to go lean on the busiest last weekend ..? I don't actually understand. When all came to, they were not offering dessert because "they were saving it for Valentine's Day". No notification about when their kitchen closed and no asks if anybody wanted to order for to-go. On top of that, everyone did not have free parking and had to pay upon exit even with validation. You will do great as a ghost kitchen since the food was good and everyone enjoyed it. If you come back as a full service, I would seriously reconsider how you do business.

My favorite part was the pickled onions. I'd definitely get it again. And the *breakfast burrito* is okay. Nothing outstanding - they did tell us they get them made a day before and they warm up upon order.

This is a Taco Tuesday/happy hour review! First time going to El Torito and definitely my first taco Tuesday. Best part about it is that on taco Tuesday there's a happy hour!! I came in at about 5:30 and this place was pretty packed. You have to go to the tequila bar to get happy hour, and if you walk in the door it's to your left past the suitcase. I happened to come with my girlfriend and I was about to wait to be seated but she just kept on walking and seated herself. I followed her because she's been here before with her girlfriends, but I have to say I was kind of surprised. I soon learned that there is no one really seating the tequila bar because it's a "bar" I suppose. Our waitress came with the menus quickly and we decided to get 6 tacos and several drinks. They give you complimentary chips and salsa and the chips are freshly made! Really good and be warned the salsa is a little bit spicy but it's really good! If you're going to get the table side guacamole I would suggest waiting until you get the guac because the salsa is waaaaaay spicier. We decided to get the spiciest one and it didn't feel spicy at all. For the tacos they give you a ticket to show to the taco bar and they serve you just the meat. Right next to it is the condiments and you can add as much salsa, cheese, lettuce, and onions & cilantro. We both got one of each (there's three selections). I really liked the steak and carnitas. Full of flavor and really juicy. The chicken was dry and I didn't really like it. Drinks: Be warned they are pretty strong! My girlfriend got the strawberry margarita, regular margarita and both of them were pretty good! Came in decently large glasses and tasted good but didn't bite tooooo much. I decided to get two mojitos and a Mai tai. The mojitos were good! It was really refreshing and minty, and on the weaker side. I decided I wanted to go with a stronger drink and ordered a Mai tai. It came out and I started drinking it and it tasted like juice so after finishing about a third of it I offered it to my girlfriend. Bad idea.... The third that I drank was from the bottom and the top two thirds were al alcohol. I got a kick out of seeing her reaction but I kind of felt sorry for her because that's not what I intended to do. This probably happened because I didn't mix it Before I drank it and it left me with colored Bacardi. I didn't really mind but for future reference: I really need to check if the drinks are actually mixed. The service was pretty good! Our server always asked if we needed more drinks and chips before we finished so kudos there. I read some other reviews and the attentiveness of the server really changes the experience I suppose. The only bad part was that it took me asking twice and 10 minutes to get the check but it was pretty busy so I understand. Everyone looked like they had a fun time so definitely should come!! read more

I visited this location on the evening of July 9, 2025, with my family to celebrate a birthday, and sadly, the experience was incredibly disappointing. From the moment we were seated, our server Hector (name found on the receipt as he refused to provide it) seemed visibly irritated by our presence. We were a party of 11, including a child, and it was clear from the beginning that he was not interested in serving us properly. When he came to take our order, he arrogantly claimed he didn't need to write anything down because he could memorize it all. Unsurprisingly, he got it wrong, missing two entrees and important customizations like well-done meat and omissions due to health concerns (e.g., no cheese). I clearly explained my dietary restrictions, but my burrito came out completely wrong. When I brought this to his attention, instead of apologizing or correcting the issue properly, he brought me a plain burrito with just meat and a side of rice and beans. He insisted that's how it comes even though I showed him the menu to prove otherwise. I asked for a supervisor, who agreed with me, and they offered to remake it. But by then, my entire family had already finished eating, and the moment had been ruined. To make things worse, my child's kids meal was mishandled. Hector hesitated to bring a simple lemonade refill and completely forgot the included ice cream. I had to pay first just to get the dessert, and when he finally handed it over, it came without a spoon. I had to ask again, only for him to walk off to serve other tables while I stood there waiting. Another staff member eventually helped me. The most upsetting part was watching how Hector gave prompt and polite service to smaller groups, especially a table of four adults who were only ordering drinks. Meanwhile, he never once checked on us during the meal. I had to call him over multiple times, and every time, he looked annoyed, as if we were bothering him. This entire experience was deeply frustrating and left us feeling like we were treated as a burden, not as valued customers. What should have been a joyful family celebration turned into an evening of stress and disappointment. We will not be returning until this is fixed. read more

Review Title: From Loyal Fan to Never Again - Management Has Officially Killed This Location I've been coming to El Torito for years. I've followed this team through location changes and closures, always hoping the quality would stay. But after tonight, it's clear: the management here is a disaster. I spent over an hour waiting for a simple 3-item combo that I pre-ordered. Being busy on Cinco de Mayo is expected; being incompetent is not. I watched person after person walk out in frustration because this staff cannot handle a single-person order, let alone a crowd. The absolute low points of the night: Zero Communication: Not a single "sorry for the wait" or update. I sat there while staff handed out jello shots to some people and completely ignored others who had already paid. The Missing Basics: How do you run a Mexican restaurant and forget the chips and salsa? There was a poor lady there tonight who just wanted chips and salsa to take back to her hotel for a work trip--she waited just as long as I did for the bare minimum. I didn't get mine either. No chips, no salsa, no nothing. The "Stealth" Short-Change: I had to show my email just to get an update, only to be told, "Oh, we ran out of chicken tamales." They didn't offer a substitute or a refund; they just threw "two chickens" in the bag and acted like they did me a favor. Same Old Story: I've complained to management here years ago. I've taken breaks for 6 months, 8 months, even a year. Every time I come back, it's the same repeat BS. They once told me, "Nobody here hates you," but with this level of consistent failure, I find that hard to believe. You guys used to be great. You were the go-to spot. Now? Came to celebrate but I should've just stayed home. I first ordered a lime margarita on the rocks and I got strawberry blended...after informing my waiter he takes the drink and to "fix" it but just ends up bringing a strawberry one on the rocks... I let it go because I don't want to wait another 10 minutes for another wrong drink. Our party orders and everything goes well until they bring the food. They got my order completely wrong. I ordered the carne asada and cheese enchilada and I got a taco and cheese enchilada. My food gets sent back and rushed. The photo shows that it was rushed because the meet looks a little to rare when I asked for medium well. The plate didn't even come complete with everything. I had to call on another waiter to take the food away because it looked so unpleasant. Everyone ate as I sat there with my one cheese enchilada. How embarrassing. I don't get how someone can mess up three times and not ask for some help. To top it all off the waiter charged us for an extra drink that we didn't order. The manager there was no help. She just kept saying "I can lose my job". As if it was our fault we were overcharged? I can't believe she was calling me a liar and tried to say "I'm not saying your lying but i can prove that" as if she couldn't ask our waiter??? So ridiculous. Although I love the food here every time I eat at ANY El Torito, especially this one, it's horrible service. I've had a waitress spill salsa on me before with nothing more than "oops sorry!" El Torito service is notorious for delivering little to no service if you order a low priced item because in their minds they feel they will get a small tip. I'm particular to enjoying my chips and salsa then ordering the quesadilla with salad combo with a water. Almost every time I order this I seldomly get my water glass even refilled, let alone the waiter or waitress asking me how the meal is. I can usually see my waiter or waitress devoting all of their attention to tables with a larger group because they know they're working up a big tip! Once through with eating I've had to wait as long as 15 minutes for the bill, even then it was not brought to me. I've had to go up to the the front desk or the door to the kitchen and ask various people multiple times for the bill. I've walked out of this place a few times without paying because I absolutely could not hang around and wait for my bill to magically appear. I've complained before and received a call from the manager inviting me in to a brunch to give them another chance. No discount was given to my bill and it's a "buffet style" serving situation so there was no need for service other than to refil the mimosas. I used to go to this restaurant but I decided not, my boyfriend and I decided to go there last Saturday and it was his first time; we call then to see if we need to reserve the place and the girl speak so rude and before I say bye she hang up the phone without asking if I have a question, then we went there and firs server came in she was an old blond lady with all those eye shadow on her eyes I don't remember her name; she throw the menus on a table and when she came back we asked if we can change our table, so she gave us the dirty look and she took the menus from a first table to the other and then , she never come back and the other server came to us to help us, and she never come to say her shift finished or what ever; she was super super rude with those dirty long fake nail she has, we go to eat their when we see something like that we can't, anyway this is from the server, then they brought salsa and that really old you could taste that and chips taste like oil, but the new server changed that for us, he was a good server and polite, but the quality of the food so bad; after all if you want to go there ; don't go it's wasting your money and you fill embrace if you invite some one; my boyfriend was so disappointed and he said I wanted to just leave that restaurant but I just respect you and stay there. In 1981, this restaurant was in the Devil's Triangle at 4221 Dolphin Striker Way, Newport Beach, in a building that has been torn down in the last few years. (Among other's, Hamburger Mary's was there for a while.) Devil's Triangle was so called because there were three of the most hip party restaurants there that shared the parking lot. As I recall, at the time Blackbeard's was where the Classic Q is now. I don't remember what restaurants were in the building Saagar is in now (There were several over the years). But El Torito was the best, and I went there almost every day. In 1984 I opened my office at 1300 Dove Street, just so I could walk (uh, stagger) back to my office and sleep until sober enough to drive home after happy hour. In those days, happy hour was a full free food buffet and standing room only every day of the week, music videos blasting from the big screens, not the sports crap shown now. In about 1989 or 1990, El Torito moved to it's current location in Irvine across from JWA. So, of course, I moved my office also to Business Center Drive so as to be within staggering distance of my favorite place ever. I stayed there until 1995, but then having hangovers got really old to me, and you really shouldn't eat tortilla chips every day as a mainstay for years as I did. It's still the best. The food here is amazing, you can really tell how much they really care about their customers. Manager Liz really helped me out in my decisions because it's my first time dining at this place and it was absolutely delicious, as stated. I got the carne asada burrito, and the meat was to die for, the salsa and chiles in there were very noticeable unlike some places where you barely taste it-- and the frijoles and rice was also incredible. even the onions, which i don't really like but they made it work! And the drinks are just as good, especially their Agua de Jamaica, the flavor was perfect and didn't seem like some sad excuse for a drink. Also, the one who served me was Yaneth. she was very nice, might be my favorite server of all time. I really recommend this place if you're looking for authentic mexican cuisine that isn't like those other places that swear they're authentic but really aren't. I recently dined at El Torito near John Wayne Airport, and while the food was great, what truly stood out was the exceptional service provided by our server, Franny. Franny was handling eight tables by herself without a busser until 5:30 pm, running all the food and drinks on her own, and she still managed to provide top-notch service. I needed at least five refills for my Diet Pepsi (sorry, Franny!), and she stayed on top of it without missing a beat. Her professionalism, positive attitude, and attention to detail were impressive, especially under such challenging circumstances. As for the food, the salmon tacos were fantastic--perfectly cooked, flavorful, and served with fresh accompaniments. The chips and salsa were also a highlight--crispy, fresh, and paired with a deliciously spiced salsa. The restaurant itself is conveniently located near the airport, making it a great choice for travelers or locals. Despite how busy it got, Franny's excellent service made the entire experience smooth and enjoyable. We went to El Torito in Irvine on a friday and I have to say this place gets busy. We were around the area on a business seminar and had very limited time to grab something to eat. A person at front desk told us we could go in the bar for no wait. We did and a very friendly server welcomed us there, same person who waited on us. We told Brenda (our server) about our short dinner brake and she confidently told us she would make it happen as another server brought us chips and salsa (that's what I call service!). Brenda then suggested dishes that not only arrived in almost no time but tasted great as well. I had a chicken tortilla soup and chicken quesadilla, very delicious!, my colleague tried the chicken salad with the house dressing and said was outstanding. Our experience at El Torito was exceptional from arrival to the end of our visit. This place is worth every penny you spend there. I would most definitely recommend this restaurant and this location and of course Brenda if you want to be assured great service! read more

El Torito is a place we frequent and almost always leave happy or at minimum content. However, our visit to this location was very disappointing. The service was absolutely horrible. There was only a handful of patrons yet everything took much longer than what would be acceptable. It was even more frustrating to have one of the waiters dinning next to us on his break as we waited and waited for our food. Finally, when the food did arrive it was mediocre at best. The carne asada fries were tasty but just weren't hot. Everything else was not even worth mentioning. My lack of enthusiasm for the food could also have had something to do with the condition of the restroom which made me question the cleanliness of the kitchen and the people in it. On a different note, if you are ever in the Palmdale area, the El Torito there is to die for. They are always packed but still offer speedy, first class service and the food is always on point. read more

It's Sunday, and you're craving for a fulfilling brunch with a drink special...like bottomless mimosas. I, personally, recommend El Torito because it has brunch food that I actually enjoy like scrambled egged with chorizo, bacon, jalapeños and Jack cheese. My go to tacos are carnitas and depending on my mood and the look of the meat for the day Al pastor or carne asana. Yep, I'm a Thai guy that enjoys everything in my menudo. The different textures are enjoyed and welcomed. I give Connie props for anticipating our needs like more napkins, an almost empty flute of champagne and their salsa that actually has some heat to it. I have to note any restaurant that has a good salsa. Connie is welcoming, friendly and provided great service. El Torito is a fun way to start your Sunday morning. It may not be as trendy as some of the other spots doing bottomless mimosas but the food and the drinks are a great value. read more

I always enjoy whenever I come to eat at this El Torito, whether it's for happy hour, lunch, or dinner. The service is always great, from the hostess, to waitresses/waiters, to management. The last few times I have come is Friday nights when they usually have a DJ but that was a few weeks ago, and I definitely enjoy my time, the music they played was great and made for a real enjoyable time. Usually when I go the manager in duty, is Jillian and she is very attentive to all guests. She would stop by to check how we were doing and how the food was. She could tell that we were in a bit of a rush, and made sure we got our meals and check in a timely manner. Overall, I always enjoy my meal when I come here, especially the enchiladas rancheras, and I have nothing negative to say about the staff here. read more
