El Tigre is a true tapas experience in the heart of Madrid. Imagine this:
You walk off the main strip and find yourself in a fairly well lit, loud but not crowded bar. There are three guys behind the counter. One if frantically giving out drinks and food on a plate...he seriously stressed me out watching, I was wondering if I should offer to help. But then an hour later, he was only helping two customers but still serving like a maniac! I think it's just part of his personality. The other two guys - not sure what they were doing! They looked like they were just chatting up customers.
So the vibe is fun, great crowd, mix of mid 20's to mid 30's. Now the fun part.
I go up and order two glasses of red wine, each cost 3 euros. He pours the wine in a water glass. Each pour easily had 2.5 servings of wine. Then he gives us two random plates of tapas! Baked potatoes with a special sauce, different meats, these rice and cheese balls with ham (omg delicious), cheeses etc...
We were stuffed (and drunk) after the first serving, but no we wanted to see what he would give us next since it was a surprise.
So we ordered another round of wine - our glasses again contained 2.5 servings of wine. Our next plate was just as delicious: tortillas which were actually more like a fritatta, paella, more meats, chicken wings, etc..
We were so full but the food was too good, we had to keep going.
We ordered our third glass of wine, which by this time me and my friend each had already consumed an entire bottle. I actually ask him to give us just a half serving and he laughed but did it anyway. He only charged us 3 euros, but I wanted to give him 6 so we can get our two plates. He told us not to worry and if we still wanted more food, he'll just keep giving us food on the plate.
He's a smart man because come our 5th plate, we were too drunk and full! There was no way we could get another plate. I can't even tell you what we had, but that it was delicious.
So let's break down the cost: 15 euros = a total of 12 real glasses of wine (or 3 bottles between us two), 5 plates of delicious tapas consisting of meats, sea food, etc...not just cheap stuff! A generous staff and a true experience. I also really appreciated that they spoke Spanish with me - I don't actually speak Spanish very well but they spoke it back to me and were patient when I was trying to explain to them something or when I didn't understand them. Many places all over the world would just start speaking in English when they know you're not a native speaker, but they didn't!
