OMG!!! Having lived in El Salvador, these are the best Pupusas I've had since that time. They were huge filled with pork, beans and cheese. Very scrumptious! I also tried the Posole. Again what can I say. Having grown up in New Mexico it was perfect just like Mom used to make. The pork was cut to bite size pieces and the Hominy was cooked perfect. A nice touch us the Salsa bar to spice things up. My wife tried the Tamales. They were more New Mexican style (corn husk) than the Salvadorian (banana leaves). Again more meat than masa with wonderful taste. We would definitely make the trip to this restaurant next time we visit Williamsburg. read more

Stopped in for dinner tonight with the wife and another couple, based on the strength of the Yelp reviews. I gotta say.... all of us were pretty unimpressed. We eat Mexican and Peruvian fairly regularly, so we were pretty excited to try this place. Right away, though, poor service started things off on the wrong foot. The host took our drink orders, then left and did not return with our drinks. Then our server came by and asked for our drink order. We told her that we already ordered drinks, so she left. Then she came back again to take our drink orders. Is this some bizarre Peruvian custom that I don't understand? Regardless, we ordered again and eventually got our drinks. The margarita was not impressive, and my friend had to order three beers because they were out of dos Equis Amber and corona light. Chips and salsa were served. The salsa was okay but the chips were cold (like below room temperature). The menu is a little confusing, but I eventually settled on pork fajitas. But after I ordered they informed me that they were out of pork (6pm on a Saturday, mind you). So I selected bistecca Mexicano. My Spanish isn't very good, but apparently this means shoe leather marinated in soy sauce and smothered with onions. My friend got sopes carnitas, which is hilarious since they were out of pork seconds later. The sopes were soft and doughy, and covered in gobs of raw onion. Another friend got steak and shrimp fajitas, which had 4 shrimp and way less steak. A ton of onion though. Wifey got the chicken fajita burrito. The chicken was flavored well, but that's about it. As far as positives, the side salads with the house dressing were excellent. Portions were huge, but nobody wanted their leftovers. I'm not trashing this place, but we won't be back. It's just not a 4.5 star place. read more

The food was great: fresh, plentiful, tasty. Having read about the pupusas, I ordered the plate that has a selection of them. Loved it. My son had a burrito (as usual) and proclaimed it good; he's a connoisseur of burritos, so that's worth something. I can't remember what my husband had, but he said it was great. Our waitress was fun and friendly; when we told her the kids were learning Spanish she tried to get them to speak up. It's a very casual/low-key atmosphere, with soccer on the television, etc. Not fancy at all. read more

My boyfriend and I spent the week in Williamsburg, and our condo gave us a tourist booklet with coupons for local restaurants. Upon seeing the great reviews on Yelp and the 20% coupon in our book, we gave it a shot! At first we were a bit put off that the restaurant was in a strip mall (we aren't used to that in Chicago and New York,) but we later realized this is how most local restaurants are in Williamsburg. My boyfriend ordered the Peruvian rotisserie chicken, and I got the carne asada salad. The orders came out quickly, the food was delicious, and the service was great. All of the servers seem to be working at all tables, and everyone was very polite and friendly. We went to a lot of restaurants in the Williamsburg/Newport News area, including Peter Chang's, The Trellis, The Cheese Shop, Antonio's, Chic N Fresh, and Rocco's Smokehouse, and El Sabroson was by far our favorite. We went back later that week before we left! The staff remembered us and we had another great meal. If/when we come back to the area, we definitely will be headed to El Sabroson! read more

I hate to review this place cause I don't want to have to wait for a table but this place is the best. After you go here you will never have a good reason to go to a Mexican restaurant ever again. Now this is not a Mexican restaurant, it's El Salvadorian. You can get Mexican style entrees but stick to the South American dishes you won't be disappointed. The El Canton is my choice, with the papusas and plantains. Growing up in Miami gave me a taste for the flavors of Latin America and this place hits the mark. Great authentic Peruvian food! Other Mexican and Latin American restaurants in the area just don't live up to this place! Whenever I'm craving some Latin American food, it's El Sabroson that I know I want to go to! All the servers I've ever had there have been very friendly. And their prices are really quite excellent! You pay very little for the amount of food you end up getting. My favorite dish is the Mi Canton Combo - I get it with the Revueltas Pupusas and it's all just so good! And it's a huge platter - I can barely finish it all! Usually I end up taking a few of the fried plantains home with me! I've never had bad food here and would highly recommend El Sabroson for a satisfying and fulfilling meal that you will remember for a long time! Went here after a round of Put Put. The food was pretty good except for the fact that the meat was over cooked. I got the Bistec al Pobre, if my steak hadn't been over cooked I would have given it a five star. My husband got El Favorito de Pedro. He really liked it. After a looooong hot day at Historic Jamestowne, my family of 6 was tired and hungry. The reviews looked good so we gave it a try. Excellent friendly service, the waitress got slammed right after we came in and stayed in top of everything and kept a smile on her face. The kids had chicken taquitos which were fat and perfectly cooked, I had the potato ones, also tasty. Hubby had the rotisserie chicken plate with yucca fries. The green sauce that came with it was stellar! The queso blanco was good, it had unique seasoning, not what you typically expect from queso. The free chips and excellent fresh salsa were welcomed heartily by these weary travelers. I was so over stuffed with good food and was stretching my belly, the waitress laughed and asked if I needed a bed to sleep it off and motioned to a booth, lol. We would definitely return! read more

The most recent time I visited El Sabroson my mom and I ordered the Mexican ceviche and the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail for lunch. While both tasted good, we both noticed that the food was extremely salty including the salsa and cactus salad, which seemed canned and lacked flavor. A few hours later we both had killer headaches and nausea, symptoms of MSG poisoning. Having eaten here numerous times before without problems, we did not heed the person leaving who said, "Don't eat here if you don't want MSG." Will not return until they remove or label MSG on the menu. read more

Another perfect Yelp find!! The excellent reviews were not wrong. At first I was hesitant to come here because I am not a huge fan of Peruvian food, finding it overly salty. However, my husband was in the mood for Latin food and we decided to give it a try. The service was excellent, the meal was delicious and I am glad we stopped in. I had the Bistec de Pobre, a plate of carne asada, white rice, plaintains, french fries and an egg. There was no way I was able to eat all that food, but I love the combination of flavors so I went with it. Yummy!! The salsa and chips to start was also amazing. Amazing food, nice atmosphere, quiet, good service. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the service and lack of a restroom in the restaurant area. The service wasn't bad by any means, she was just a bit difficult to understand and I got a vibe from her that seemed to say "Stupid Americans". There might have been a restroom in the store next to the restaurant, but I didn't go in there. They have lunch specials from 11 to 3, which is awesome cuz the prices are great. In town on business, was looking for a lunch place to go with my co-workers. The place decor and atmosphere is a bit weird. You get modern music playing with loud soccer game on the TV. Next is the food and beverage which was nothing special at all, maybe why it is so cheap. The coconut water in a can was disgusting, at least get a decent brand if you're going to serve it. The Fajitas came without sour cream, Guacamole etc. Instead it came with this little plate with old looking lettuce, 2 slices of tomatoes, and one slice of avocado. The meat didn't taste like anything, I put some hot sauce on it. Worst Mexican, Latin whatever you want to call it place I've eaten at. We won't be back. read more

Great Latin American restaurant. Found this place on Yelp while on vacation. They have lots of good traditional plates. My son got the taco dinner: three traditional street style tacos, just corn tortillas and neat, with onion and cilantro on the side. Wife had a burrito and loved it. I had this special dinner with two papusas, fried plantains and red beans and rice. GET THAT. It was fantastic. I had pork for one, and loroco and cheese for the other. There plantains were perfectly done, and the beans and rice were a great accompaniment. Eat here and you will not be disappointed in any way. read more

The potatoes in the pollo saltado were seasoned and cooked to perfection; I just ate the leftovers as my breakfast potates! The pollo Rico was outstanding. Really nice surprise in this weird little plaza! I've eaten in and also gotten take-out and have never been disappointed. I've gotten a bunch of different entrees but, if I'm being honest, my favorite thing about this place is the fried plantains. They taste exactly like the fried plantains I ate (and fell in love with) in Costa Rica. I've taken a few different people here and they've all liked it, regardless of the meal they've gotten. If you are looking for authentic Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian style rotisserie chicken look elsewhere. Being Peruvian myself, I was really disappointed with their rendition of lomo saltado. It was extra salty and the beef was dry. The servers were not as attentive as you would expect out of an almost perfect yelp score. The rotisserie chicken was dry and had no flavor as well. This is the only place in the peninsula that serves Peruvian dishes although it is better than the one in lynnhaven mall, this local does a disservice to the Peruvian cuisine. read more

I am very glad I stopped in for lunch today. The outside is unassuming in a strip mall but once you walk in the decor is very nice compared to some of the other places in Williamsburg. I was greeted right away and everyone was attentive and friendly. I decided to try something new and got the pupusa dish. I picked out two,one just cheese and the other with ground pork,and onions. The meal came out hot and quick. The dish comes with red beans and rice and a salad or coleslaw which goes on top of the pupusa along with red sauce on the side. Both where a good addition with texture and taste. I would have this dish again and my favorite fried plantains were on the plate. I had someone from management come out and ask me how my meal was. He was super friendly and recommended I try the Peruvian Rotisserie chicken next. I saw many other yelp reviews on that dish so I will be back to try it. I recommend this place for something different then just mexican. read more
