I LOVE THIS PLACE FOR THE FOOD, THE PEOPLE, and JUST BECAUSE... Even though I have been eating here for over 10 years, I still feel like it's a HIDDEN GEM in Bartow! Great Mexican food! The way to do it is ... get your drinks from the coolers on the left side of the store first before you go to the counter to order (unless you are going to get fruit water). Highly recommended. Food is fresh. I've ordered from El Patron Supermarket for years now. Consistently, the food is fresh. Ingredients are fresh and good quality. Tamales run out quickly! They are excellent! Anything on the menu will not disappoint. The variety of pastries and breads, it is difficult to choose a few. Cakes are sooooo fresh! Dessert tres leches is a winner every time for me. I just wish they added a little more liquid to moisten it. Though it's still great! Service: Friendly. El Patron is the definition of a hidden gem. This Mexican restaurant/supermarket is housed in an old supermarket plaza, which at first glance appears abandoned but is home to authentic flavorful Mexican food. I have visited on a handful of occasions and have always had a good experience. I've had their tacos, tostadas, tamales, and chips and guacamole, all of which were fantastic. This was a great place to grab some cheap tacos! My friends and I went a few days ago and they are open for dine in and take out. I ordered 4 al pastor tacos and a pineapple juice. I was introduced to El Patron Supermarket by a co worker. I moved from California and missed the Mexican restaurants/Grocerystores. When it comes to Hispanic food, I am a big fan of Stews/Caldo Soups more so than tacos burritos or Fajitas. El Patron helps my homesickness. I can usually find everything needed for home cooked Mexican food there. And the food us awesome. It is a bit more expensive than another similar establishment but it is nicer and cleaner. El Patron for the win!! In Bartow for work, didn't want to stop for fast food. So I came across El Patron Supermarket after a little research. This place is kind of hidden behind a gas station but is certainly worth the effort. I walked in, and was literally impressed. At first sight, there is a tasty rack of baked treats, and just a little further back is restaurant. They offer tacos, burritos, taquitos, and tamales. I had a steak torta with a side of beans and rice. The Mexican style sandwich was phenomenal. The beans were cooked perfectly, but the rice was dynamite. The red and green salsas were delicious. There are tables for dining in, but I was able to grab lunch to go. This place is so good I'll be back tomorrow!! read more

Thanks, YELPers! A great find, hidden behind a Citgo at 17 and Georgia St. I'm now part of the secret club that has found this place. I enjoyed the grocery, the restaurant & the bakery. They have a lots of pan dulce (bakery sweets) baked daily, costing 80 cents to $1.25. The conchas, guava pastry & strawberry pastry melted in our mouths! Fresh and soft. (under $5 is cash only) they have a case full of tres leches cakes. Smalls run $30 and look deliciosa. Mexican pastries are less sweet than we're used to and a joyous change. Tres leches slices are $3.50 in the cold case and melt in your mouth moist with a pecan middle layer. They also have chocolate flan! The grocery is full of Mexican imports, some found now cheaper in regular groceries but lots of authentic gems, pinatas, spices and flavors for your culinary delights. Also fresh fruits, veggies & a deli. There are 16 pictured items on the restaurant wall board with no prices, prices run just under $10 for platters and about $2 as ala carte. No paper menus--ignore those photos I chose a corn & a flour tortilla ($1.49, $1.89). Order at the counter, they bring to table or call out your name. They were both fresh and delicious with the tiny corn tortilla reminding me of "locals" Mexican restaurants when I was there. Tamales, yum. Grilled shrimp is great. Chicken & black bean nachos were delish. Refried beans, well-flavored. Green sauce was perfect, Red sauce was too hot for me. Girl said it "depended on the chilis used that day" as to hotness. You pick a soda from the grocery or order a fruit juice at the counter. Pineapple water scooped from a bucket for $1 was great. The staff was friendly, helpful and spoke English. The pastries, the restaurant and the staff are all 5-star. The lack of pastry names/labels, lack of transparent menu pricing and no sign out front are keeping me from calling it "perfect". CONCERN. *Keep an eye on the pastries, sometimes they are old and dried from standing out a week and the serving trays for picking up pastries are filthy. The horchata here is to die for and the food is great and authentic! I was impressed by the prices too! My husband and I are from Minnesota, and every time we come visit family we go to get the horchata MULTIPLE times. They also have fun pastries and authentic Hispanic candies, which is a really cool cultural experience. The feel of the establishment also resembles an an authentic Hispanic market, which I love!!! There are many choices on the menu. My colleague brought me here for lunch. If you don't know where the restaurant is, it will be difficult to find.
