We stopped in one Saturday morning for a late lunch, and there were only a few people inside. Chips and salsa were brought to our table right away and the waitress got our order. Salsa was really good! There were a few different types and they all were tasty! I got the chilaquiles and my mom got the Mexican eggs breakfast (or something like that). She really liked hers and said that the chorizo was very tasty. I love chilaquiles, I eat them everywhere, that being said I judge them and compare them. These were good, but the sauce lacked flavor. I have been here quite a few times and I always order Chile verde crunchy tacos. I come in today to order to go and they tell me they don't make Chile verde tacos!!!????! I said I order it every time I come here. And pay $15 for 2 tacos! But all of a sudden they can't do it? If they have everything to make it why won't they? No different than putting chicken or beef in a shell? Give them to me separately I'll do it myself if it is too difficult for you. But I am the customer that is paying you. I don't understand?! I will never come back. It's not like what I asked for is all that hard. Just Chile verde and cheese in a crunchy taco shell with a side of rice. Absolutely ridiculous! El Maguey food is mediocre taste and quality Mexican food. It's a small old Former Taco Del Mar location that's been there for many years. We rediscovered it a few weeks ago when we were going to In-N-Out in the same shopping center. We liked the chips and salsa. The chicken and shrimp fajitas were good but a little over done today. I ordered a taco and one chicken enchilada plate and one bean and cheese burrito kids plate. Kids meal doesn't include a kids drink. My problem with it is they nickel and dime you for everything. Basket of chips to small for family of four, $1.99 more for each basket. They appeared to be under staffed with only one server. I had to remind her for our drinks. Extra flour tortillas $1.50 We wanted 2 kids milks and got two adult size Milks $2.99 each. I nearly fell out of my chair when the almost $65.00 bill came. They also brought me a bean dip and a bean plate so they took off four dollars new bill about $61.00. Never going here again. read more

I tried a combination plate and it was very good. Exactly what I was expecting from hey Kalifornia Mexican restaurant. Very tasty. It seem like the chef put a half a scoop of rice on my plate. Maybe they were running low on rice. My shredded chicken taco was very good but Halfway through my taco all the meat came out in a 3 inch strip. I think the chef could have cut up the meat a little bit better or shredded it into smaller pieces. Really no complaints the food was delicious. And oh my God the young lady that was my waitress was the sweetest person I ever met. read more

Pros: Ordered the combo fajitas, comes with rice and beans sour cream and guacamole, would of liked to see more fajita sides other than sour cream and guac. But the flavor was good. Cheese quesadilla dinner is huge! My son loved all the cheese! Child's quesadilla is a regular size tortilla with cheese and served with fries. All the food was good and service was good. The gravy and cheese is extra but chips come with two types of salsa both good but no heat. Cons: Only 3 tortilla's brought to the table so we asked for more to go with the fajitas and did not know we would be charged $1.29 until the bill came. Also asked for a little bit of cheese to go on the fajitas and again a $1.29 added to the bill. Total bill $41.00 plus tip for 3 meals, 1 being a kids meal and 2 sodas. Best Mexican food in Lodi. Sometimes the look closed but they are just dimly lit which makes a nice ambiance. The tortilla soup is amazing. Get it every time I go as an appetizer. I love this place. The salsa is excellent! The chunky looking one is my favorite. The staff is very nice and the food is great. My husband and I love the California Chicken entree. The Mexico City street tacos (pastor) are what I call my "deathbed food". If I had one last meal on this earth, it would be these tacos. My husband and I came in a few months ago and tried this amazing creation in a hot stone cauldron with bubbling cheesy sauce, and it was topped with so much yummy meat, from beef and chicken to shrimp and fish. She was friendly enough but boy she was busy. Rarely made eye contact because she was just go go go. My carnitas Mexican style tacos were good. Good amount of cilantro and the meat was tender with a light crisp. I would go again if someone requested we go but I wouldn't voluntarily go back as my suggestion. I was brought some chips and a ramekin of salsa that was about 25% literally full. So I placed my order of 2 steak tacos and after ordering I asked if I could please have some more salsa. My waitress responded "You only ordered 2 tacos, that actually doesn't come with chips and salsa but I'll give it to you this time!" And walked a away. Ummm excuse me? So I can't get anymore salsa it was never full in the first place? Am I able to buy some salsa? I'm not sure I was never asked or offered. I had the spinach and mushroom enchiladas with tomatillo sauce and they were not exciting. The sauce was tangy but had no spice to it. We ordered beef and chicken fajita dinners to go. If you like bell peppers and onions you will love their fajitas. There may have been 3oz. of chicken and much less beef. I was shocked when we got home and opened the containers. No sour cream or guacamole, tiny bag of chips. $30 and I had to fix my husband something else to eat because it was such a skimpy amount of food. We came here because it's pretty close to our home, next time we will continue down to the other end of Kettleman to our favorite Mexican restaurant. The best Mexican restaurant in town, the owner Gaby, is an excellent cook and service is always wonderful. My favorite is the chicken tostada with rice and beans. I try to save room after eating the chips and salsa. They have a hot and mild salsa, I like both! Their guacamole dip is fresh and tasty too. My partner likes the chicken taco and enchilada suiza. Pretty pathetic. $9 for 3 of em plus rice n beans. I got carnitas. They were tiny, and the carnitas were overcooked, stale, and hard, not to mention there was probably only a quarter cup of meat (if that) on each one. The only thing keeping me from giving 1 star is the salsa. Two types were brought out with the chips, a thick red one and a chunky darker one. Amazing services and great food! Came in and spoke to Gabby about ordering for a party of 10 to-go. Gabby and the staff were so helpful and super sweet. Ordered two dozens of mixed tacos, beef and chicken enchiladas, rice, beans and chips/salsa. Everyone in the office couldn't believe they've never been to this place. The spicy al pastor was very flavorful. The carne asada could have used a lil bit of that spice but still good. I snuck a horchata in there and no regrets. Not an overwhelming cinnamon taste.
