One star for nice, sympathetic staff. I dropped my laptop off January 26 because it wouldn't turn on and the charging cord or port was damaged. Two weeks later, I was told the motherboard was fine and that they had replaced the charging port, but the cord pin was broken, so they ordered a new one. A week later, I went in and it was the wrong size. They ordered the right one. A week later, I went in and picked up the new charging cord. It didn't work. Brought the cord and laptop back in and was told a week later that the motherboard was bad and a replacement would be nearly the price of a new laptop. I was literally without a laptop for nearly a month and a half. Today, my daughter mentioned she had her laptop fixed by another tech place in town called The Rex Tech, which is literally across the street from El-Genes. I rushed my laptop in, they flushed the BIOS twice, found me a cord and I was in and out in 2 hours with a working laptop. read more

I needed to determine whether my video card or my motherboard went out. Job would have taken 10 minutes, they denied me service because I wanted to stay and watch the process of them working on my $2,000 gaming pc. You aren't allowed in the back! Can't we make an exception and let me watch? Nope! If I can't watch and go along the process I'm just going to leave, you would rather lose business then allow me to watch you touch my stuff? For a shop that specializes in television sales and repair, these guys sure didn't know much about my TV. At least, that's how they acted when I brought it in. I had a no-name brand LCD TV that I bought a few years prior, and I knew it was a piece of junk. I knew this because I did some research online and found out that everyone who bought this same off-brand was experiencing the same problem as me: the TV just stopped working after three years. I knew the part that was needed to fix it and everything. I told the repairman explicitly that it was not worth more than a hundred dollars to me to repair it. "Can you fix it for less than a hundred dollars?" "We can't know that unless we take a look at it." "Okay, then take a look at it." "We'll have to charge you forty-five dollars to look at it." "But what if you look at it and the cost of repair is more than a hundred dollars? Then I'm out forty-five dollars." They just stared at me, blankly. "Okay, fine," I said, "I've done some research and this model is NOTORIOUS for having the power source burn out. In fact, everything I found online pointed to this one part. All the symptoms match perfectly. This part was shoddily made, and the manufacturer doesn't exist anymore. So if it is what I think it is, will THAT cost more than a hundred dollars?" "Well, in other models that part can be replaced for as little as forty dollars." "But the manufacturer doesn't exist anymore. Won't that drive up the price for the part?" "Nah, usually the parts are standard and can be interchanged from different models." After paying them their $45 inspection fee, I get a phone call explaining that it will run me about $280 to repair. Why so expensive? This model has a special part that needs to be ordered. Of course it does. So I told them to please forget about ordering the part and now I'm forty-five dollars. I realize that most of this is my own stupid fault for putting money into a piece of junk, but I just wish they would have been straight-forward with me when I was originally talking to them. I just wanted to know whether or not I could fix it for less than a hundred dollars. If they didn't know this brand, couldn't they have looked it up? I told them what part needed to be replaced. Could they not have looked that up, too? Instead, they implied that the part was easy to get and cheap to boot. Of course, they made no guarantees, but they weren't up front with me, either. They could just have easily have said: "Listen, we're not familiar with this TV and if the manufacturer doesn't exist anymore, the part may have to be specially ordered and expensive. If you don't want to spend over a hundred dollars on this, you may want to consider just trashing it." How hard would that be? Oh, right, but then they wouldn't get my hard-earned forty bucks. I was looking for a way to get the internet on my TV so I could watch Netflix, but I didn't have a Smart TV and had no idea how to do it without getting a new 600 dollar Smart TV. I went into the store and explained my situation, and they showed me several different ways to do it within my price range! Instead of buying a whole new TV, I bought an inexpensive Blu-ray player with internet connections, a CAT5 internet cable, and an HDMI cord to stream it to my TV. They also explained to me what I needed to do step by step to get it set up properly and it is now working great! Awesome store. read more
