Tucked away in a quiet plaza behind the Lonja is this little gem of a cafe. Actually, it is less a cafe than a hot chocolate, hortchata, and buñuelos establishment. Buñuelos are super delicious deep-fried lumps of soft dough rolled in sugar that are traditionally available only during Fallas time in March. Hortchateria El Collado is one of a handful of places in Valencia where you can get them year-round. They deep-fry them in a big vat right out in front of the cafe, and they do an amazingly good job of it too. I also quite liked their thick hot chocolate. I think it is better than the hot chocolate they serve at those tourist favorites El Siglo and Hortchateria Santa Catalina near Plaza de la Reina; the prices are better too. Don't expect anything fancy though; the decor is pretty basic and functional. read more
