It takes something special to convince yourself to stay in Perpignan with Barcelona calling from…read morethe other side of the border. After 700 km on bike through France we got stuck in the city after another messy crossing on the highway. A camping van's wet dream of honking.  Luckily we landed in Bar and Britz to wash down the irritation with a bottle of wine served by the towering Britz, a local rugby legend. The man himself has nothing to prove to his daily clients. Moreover, anybody in the city with a bit of common sense will recommend his bar with its motley crew of sport enthusiasts, solemn bar flies and humorous wisecrackers. Outside, the sun scorches the square. Inside, the medicine gets mixed up as catalan pride is concocted with a good pinch of irony. Stayed two days. Got smashed.

Excellent food and drinks. Book a table in advance or arrive early to ensure somewhere to sit. Or…read morebe prepared to wait. The service is great at they will get you somewhere to sit eventually. We had a plate of different cheeses, air-dried ham, bread, moule frites and a couple of glasses of red. Well worth a visit, but come early.

Sadly, this seemed to be one of three or four bars open on New Years Eve! The drinks were fine... beer is beer no matter where you are in the world. They have a nice selection of whiskeys that you don't normally find in America. Biggest complaint? The place had a depressed feel to it - the Television was off (no sports), no special celebration for New Years... Midnight came and went; no toast from the bar, nothing special. It seems like this place could be cooler if they tried.

We wanted to have something to eat at this place, we ordered a bottle of wine and asked the waiter…read morewhat they had to eat and while we were thinking about it, the waiter went to the board and changed the prices of what we had just asked about. Obiously we didn't ordered anything and went to another place. We asked for the note and ten minutes later the waiter was just there speaking with a friend and we had to go to another waiter to pay for the wine.
