Basic in furniture, but compensated by atmosphere. Friendly, helpful staff. Always busy with locals. Simply the best, thin crust, pizza in town. read more

Wonderful little Italian restaurant. They serve the usual Italian restaurant fare, including…read morebrick oven pizza and lasagnas, with a nice selection of meat and fish dishes as well. Everything was well prepared, especially my eggplant and zucchini pizza, and my wife loved her tuna steak. The rest of our party raved about their entrees. Service was exemplary, attentive but not rushed. Well worth stopping by for a quiet quality Italian meal.

The only minus points I can see would be if it is a holiday, the staff are a bit slower, and that the portions are very large, so ordering a starter, and the main course is too much, even for big eaters. I highly recommend students and families to eat here for a great price, lovely tasting food, and a nice atmosphere.

I decided to dine here thanks to local Yelpers' reviews - otherwise I wouldn't probably have found…read morethe well hidden venue. I enjoyed the dinner at a lake viewing terrace. As for a weekday it was pretty busy. All the staff appeared friendly and not too mention an Italian guy looking as a Chef or perhaps the owner popping up a couple of times and chatting with customers. For starter I had Antipasti Fantasia: nicely dressed smoked salmon and small shrimps under mayonnaise sauce with some herbs. A really good start! I asked for some bread for it but didn't get it. Another waitress recollected this when I was done with the dish. For main course I had a Day's special i.e. Lasagna con frutti di mare - perhaps the portion is not huge but it is worth the effort, I tell you. Dessert: Huge (self)disappointment! Here came out my lack of awareness of local culture. I ordered wonderfully and thrilling sounding Amarenensorbet and as a result I needed to face a nicely looking cup of MILK ice-cream with whipped cream and sour cherries that the latter I love but it was not I'd meant when ordering. (Referring to Wikipedia afterwards; Although the term sorbet in the Netherlands is used for a long time for a coupe of ice consisting of scoops ice cream, topped with fruit sauce and served with fruit and whipped cream, this meaning in the better restaurants disappeared for many years. In Flanders this sense has never been used.) Considering all the event emotions, I'd say Il Lago still deserves at least good four Yelp stars. Grazie mille!

We had a very nice antipasto of typical Sardinian seafood, followed by a perfectly cooked risotto with canunau wine, pecorino and sausage and an extraordinary stewed lamb with artichokes. The dinner ended with a marvellous sorbet with fresh fruit. The selection of Sardinian wines is also outstanding. The waiter was wonderful and attentive. The whole experience is warmly recommended to anybody travelling to Groningen.
