I damaged my brown leather shoes on the day I bought them. I was distraught. I rang the shop and was advised to return them to see what they could do. I received them back today. WOW! I rate Barker higher than any of the other factory shoe shops I visited in Northampton primarily…read morebecause I found a pair of walnut-coloured brogues I'd wanted here in my size. You'll wade through lots of crap (Barker had the widest selection of any of the stores we visited, though very little was fantastic) to find a pair to love, of that much I am sure. It was not until I spotted the last box of 3.5's that I had any hope I might find what I was after. My eventual purchase made me especially happy because the Minerva model was a shoe I'd had on my target list prior to coming to Northampton (and one that is currently available in Barker retail outlets at double the price.) In sum, Barker is worth a stop if you're already up in Northampton but not worth making a special trip from London for.

The shop is located in the large village of Woodford Halse near Daventry in Northamptonshire. The shop is a really traditional shop, the locally iconic 'train symbol' is famous in the area. Every pair of shoes we have bought there have always been of good quality and lasted for ages. The shop always has a friendly, family atmosphere and there is always a wide variety and choice of shoes and other footwear. There are few negatives, though sometimes it could be said the shop was messy. Occasionally we have been in, and it has appeared disorganised. Though that is only occasionally. A good value, friendly store, locally serving the community for decades.

The work boots I wear are Clarks Air; superbly comfortable in a perfect fitting half size and they cost me a tenner! My ace Nike trainers for the gym cost the same. I have lovely dark brown Loake boots which were factory seconds (you would have no idea), and 7 years later they are still mint: they cost me £45 while perfect: versions cost over £200. Kids shoes are also bargains here and we are not talking the cheapo made in china stuff. Clarks and Start Rite at sensible prices - what could be better than a shop full of shoes, where the whole family can leave with something they like? The staff are great too, especially the long-termers. Don't mess about, get straight to Woodford and ask for Ange!

You're never waiting long for an assistant, but they don't bug you eaither which is a blessing considering the pushy nature of other stores! They also go the extra mile. I know it's standard practice, but to have someone take the time to order in another pair of shoes half a size bigger just for me to try on, plus texting me to let me know they'd arrived in, whilst reassuring me that if I didn't go ahead they'd just be added to the current stock so there was no pressure at all to buy, made it a very good shopping experience. So I'm sold. I hope the shoes I settled on last me a long while, but I'll certainly be back when I need a new pair of pumps. Or should that be soled?

I once bought a pair of shoes from here that were £15 and identical to the ones that I had my eye on in Faith for £60. The only difference was the label inside. The prices are always really good though. They sell shoes for Men, Women and Children as well as things like slippers and Wellys and bags too. If you are looking for cheap footwear then this is really a good place to start. Not very good though if you have trouble with steps as the shop is situated high up and you have to climb a lot of stairs inside the building to get there. There is no allocated parking, but I am usually lucky and manage to get a space somewhere close by.
