You might recall the…read moremesmerizing aquarium, complete with bug-eyed fat goldfish and a thick layer of algae on the glass. You may remember that strange smell erupting from the stained, muddy carpet as you were shown to your torn, vinyl chair at the table with the circle in the middle that spins around. There were those funny sticks that you were supposed to pick up food with. And the decor - lots of red and gold lanterns, some plastic covered 'fine' art oriental landscapes made of off cuts of wood, all dripping with fat - stained cobwebs. Welcome to the Lao Zhao Good Luck Chinese Restaurant. Time stopped firmly here in the 70s, shortly after the original fit out. I don't think a thing has been cleaned properly or changed since. This is a place where round eyes and speaking English is most definitely in the minority. And there's an excellent reason why. Here's a hint: it's not the decor. The sole advertisement on the very plain window gives a clue to their specialty. It's the Peking Duck. It's legendary. Who cares how the place looks and don't even try to imagine the state of the kitchen. Just order the duck and slip in to nirvana. Or whatever the Chinese equivalent is.

Without going to China, I have been led to believe this is the best peking duck in Sydney. This unassuming restaurant in suburbia along the side of the hume highway does serve some good crispy skinned roast duck. You have to pre book the duck and they call and check on you if you're not there on time as the duck is sitting there getting cold if you're running late. The pancakes appear to be home made and are pretty good, just remember to separate them as it is quite easy to pick up 2 at once which becomes too thick if you try to roll up a pancake. The pancakes, cucumber, shallots and condiments are refilled if you like to have a lot of pancakes. We normally just have a few pancakes each and eat the rest of the duck on it's own which allows us to have room in our stomachs for other dishes on the menu. The standard northern fare of hand made noodles and dumplings are decent here. The Dan Dan noodles comes with a nice sauce and with a good kick of space. The decor of this place is old school mid 80's Chinese restaurant, not a place to have a romantic date but certainly a place to have a good feed !

However, at tasting the dumplings and the pancake, tasted exceptionally flavoursome (to my surprise tbh). The service was I guess you could say.... the typical asian restaurant service haha. So I wasn't expecting anything much, so no hard feelings there. Unfortunately, I was feeling quite full that day and couldn't eat too much. So I'll probably come back another day to fully satisfy myself.

Lucky for me, one of my friends had recommended this Taiwanese Dumpling restaurant. Having never ordered here before, the group of friends I was dining with ordered a variety of dishes that included a mix of 20 dumplings, fried vegetable noodles and two other items that were circled in the menu, indicating it was one of the restaurant's specials. These were the shallot pancake and the beef noodle soup, both of which were the favourite items by far I tasted there. The Beef Noodle Soup was very surprising, unlike the Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup, this Taiwanese version had large chunks of beef, that were slow cooked and so tender they melted in your mouth. The soup also had a slight sweet aroma to it, that made it unlike a lot of other noodle soup dishes I've tried before and tasted very delicious. The shallot pancake too was very crispy, had the texture of an oily, flaky, thin pizza bread, although tasted more similar to an indian roti bread with a hint of the onion flavour that the shallots added. This is a good place to visit when you're in a pickle and needing to pick a good restaurant to dine at on Burwood road.
