A library with a…read more porch Wellfleet is a pleasant little town on Cape Cod. It's typical of many Cape Cod towns with beautiful beaches, great dunes, open ocean and a unique charm. So it's quite appropriate that the town has a beautiful and unique library. The library is actually quite new and the books weren't moved into the building until 1989. Before that the official Wellfleet Library took a circuitous route that took them into several different locations around town. Seemed the library was always jumping around. The first library started in 1893 when the books were just sort of piled in the back of the First Congregational Church. Over the years the library took up residence in a bank, dry good stores, town hall and finally an old curtain factory. The poor books certainly had to move around a lot over the years but finally have found a permanent home. The present library is a wonderful place. The first thing that catches the eye is the huge porch. A great place to sit outside and read, talk to friends or just relax. The inside has over 10,000 square feet and separates into several rooms which makes it a convenient place to hold meetings, events and displays. Of course the library has all the usually amenities of a modern library and helpful and extremely pleasant and friendly librarians but it's the cool, rustic and unique charm and great porch that makes this library special. It took a century to find it's permanent home but I suspect that the library is going to be in this spot for a long, long time.

The oldest of the…read moreold The first Sturgis Library was founded in 1863, that's pretty old but there are older libraries. However the building that the library is in was built by the Reverend John Lothropp in 1644 and that makes this building the oldest in the country to contain a library. And since the good Reverend held pray meetings in the front of the house that makes this building the oldest in the country to have held regular pray services. Of course the structure has been modified over the years but still looks and feels really old. Even smells really old, in a good way. And a really old building should have really old stuff inside and this place is filled with old stuff. Even some of the old floor boards creak in a really cool and old sounding way. This library is more of a museum than a book container, cool pictures of dead people on the walls, meticulously crafted ship models, really old books. antique furniture and other old stuff grace the interior of the library. The Sturgis Library is a really cool and functional library in a really cool Cape Cod town, the type of place you can easily drive right by without even noticing it. And that would be a real shame.

School houses and…read morelibraries Old school houses make great libraries and fortunately New England still has quite a few quant old school houses that were converted into libraries and still function in that capacity. The Cotuit Library was started around 1874 and found a permanent home in 1894 when they moved into a little school house that was built around 1830. Or course the original school house was tiny and over the years additions were built. The library today is a lovely and quant place with old furniture and pictures in the older rooms and more of a modern look in the newest addition. Practical, useful and aesthetically interesting at the same time. The library definitely has a small town ambiance to it and lots of events, programs and meetings are held here. A wonderful library that has the conveniences of the modern world with the history of the past.

The library was just one of many rooms in the block of buildings that also included dress makers, attorneys, dry goods, apartments and even a barber. The library was small back then but kept growing and eventually assimilated the entire block. It kept growing and sucked in some surrounding buildings too. The library today is pleasantly bizarre and looks like it was designed by some mad scientist. Just sort of rambles on in all directions but the incongruity just adds to it's uniqueness and coolness. Inside it has all the stuff a library should have, including a great genealogy and local history room, but it just might take longer to find one particular thing until you get use to the place. Lots of cool architecture and art works all over the place. A whole bunch of statues by the 19th century artist, John Rogers are scattered around. At one time there were more but in 1976 some thieving jackals broke into the library and stole some. In spite of an investigation by the FBI the unique statues were never seen again. The library has friendly and helpful librarians and a feel of someone's old and elegant home. A very cool place to sit and relax, read a book, do some research or just take in all the weird coolness and history.

A gingerbread library…read more This wonderful library in a sort of Gingerbread American Gothic style was built about 1856. But nobody is absolutely sure where it came from. Most people think that it was brought here from somewhere else. A campground in Yarmouth perhaps or maybe even Martha's Vineyard. Others think that is was built on site by John Rose, the first owner of the diminutive house. Where ever it came from the house was put to a lot of different uses. Over the decades It was a cobbler shop, a poetess home, a place for prayer meetings. It didn't become a library until 1918. It was so small that the books were piled everywhere and the patrons had to dig around to find what they were looking for. The library didn't even have electricity until the 1950s. A "huge" addition was constructed in the early 1960s but it still is a small library by any standards. A wonderfully unique and lovely library that looks like it was plucked right out of the past.

Surprisingly it really hasn't changed that much over the years. Sure the traffic on Rt. 6 is still hellish during the summer but then it was always pretty bad. Most of it is heading toward P-Town and just going through Wellfleet. The town does get crowded during the summer but you can still find quiet places to get away. The center of town is about as quaint and New England as it gets. A few little stores, a couple of restaurants and a beautiful church. What really makes Wellfleet special is that most of it was left undeveloped.. Just one lovely place after another that was left pristine and wild. Most of the entire east side is dunes and beach. Wellfleet is a great place for walking along a lonely beach, biking on the trails or kayaking in the harbor. If you want some excitement P-Town is only a short drove to the north. If you want to go out to the islands Hyannis and the ferries aren't too far away, although in the summer it might take a while to actually get there. Like most of the Cape Wellfleet is the nicest in the off season when it becomes quiet, lonely and very, very special.

During the summer we only come by boat so road rage doesn't set in but then we're faced with the hordes of tourists in town. It's still a terrific place to be but the fall is something extra special. We are boaters so we like checking out the harbor and looking around at other people's boats. There were still plenty of them to see down at the town pier. The beach is beautiful and ideal now for a peaceful walk with the incredible dunes behind you. The pace was really relaxing, unhurried and with comfortable temperatures. This is a great town for walking and biking. It's so worth a trip down this time of year. Go if you can.
