The interior is nicely done with some nicely detailed Chinese style furniture. They serve a good selection of Chinese, Malaysian and Thai dishes, plus a reasonable selection of wines. The only down side is all the coke is always flat, the happy birthday song is SO loud and crackly, and the fact the desert section is frequently fondled by children (saw a child put whole hand in Eton mess, to mouth, back again then touched jelly) I'd rather it be sectioned off more, because why should children be allowed to do this in the first place -
We visited The World's End before heading to another local pub for some live music; it was more a…read morecase of necessity rather than choice but, all in all, it was a good meal before an evening with a few drinks. It's a fairly large pub, with a separate restaurant and bar, plus a hotel upstairs. The bar area was busy when we arrived whereas the restaurant was completely empty - so guess where we were sat! To be fair, it was early when we arrived, and it started to fill up towards the end of our meal. There was a bit of confusion over our booking but, as mentioned, there really wasn't much need for it. The menu is pretty large with a selection of different mains, salads and sandwiches. My mum and I decided to share the halloumi dish, with came with cous cous and peppers, and the lamb kofta kebab, served with a pitta and chips. Both dishes were good though the lamb was slightly oily - never good, especially when served on a wooden board. A good meal and a pub worth knowing about if you're in the area but not somewhere I'd rush back to.
This pub was refurbished a few years back to an exceptionally high standard with the addition of an…read moreannexe housing 'boutique' bedrooms for those wanting an overnight stay. The pub area is light and airy, the staff are pretty friendly and the range of drinks is quite large including some of the larger names of real ales. There's also the option to eat in the bar area or in the huge terrace area at the rear, which has the large European cafe style of canopies and gas heaters. Having been to the restaurant at the World's End around five or six times over the last few years, there's certainly a small element of hit or miss when it comes to consistency of quality of food leaving the kitchen from time to time. Sunday lunch there is pretty good value, at under ten Pounds and is fresh and generally tasty. We've had a couple of issues where not all of the party's meals arriving at the same time - but the staff are always polite and resolve to the best of their ability. They even offered to knock one meal off the bill for not getting it out at the same time - but this wasn't necessary and we paid the value to them as part of the tip for handling the issue so well. Occasionally the steaks do let this place down. It's a shame as 90% of the time they're wonderful, tasty and juicy and not at all overpriced, ranging from around £15 for the rump up to £20 for the fillet. Just paying a little more attention to the consistency in quality of the meat will sort this out, but when it's right (and it is 90% of the time) they are very very nice indeed. The grazing boards are excellent for a light informal snack, if a little on the pricy side for what you get. The home comforts from the menu offer home-style foods, such as fish and chips (little too bony perhaps) sausage and mash (recommended) and an excellent steak burger which is very good indeed. On the whole, the atmosphere, service, and food are perhaps an eight out of ten, but a little too often the amount of customers can make the service and food slip to a six. And if you get a table next to the entrance to the toilets, ask to move! The door bangs shut with an almighty force, which will drive you potty (no pun intended) by the time you leave! But on the whole, not bad, worth a visit or two.
