    Sutton Mawr Farm

    Sutton Mawr Farm

Visiting the Sutton Mawr Farm for dinner was definitely a highlight of my visit to Wales on August…read more9th, 2013. Originally when I found out we were going to a farm for a "Be My Guest Trafalgar Farewell Dinner" on a farm I wasn't that excited. I should have been because I've always loved farms since my grandparents had one in Illinois years ago. The thing that came to my mind before my actual visit was that it would just be a farm and nothing too fancy. I was totally wrong and I would have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the Sutton Mawr Farm is and our dinner was incredible. The Sutton Mawr Farm is a luxury boutique Bed & Breakfast and self catering accommodation. Vicki, one of the owners of the farm, is a Cordon Bleu trained chef, and I was told she used to work for Princess Diana. She, her husband Mark, their daughters Sophie and Izzy were amazing hosts to our tour group for dinner. One of the farm's employees, I can't recall her name right now, gave us a nice little tour of the grounds before dinner and we got to see all their cute little dogs running around. Dora, was a cute little Pug, who barked at us all when we arrived. When she realized we weren't there to invade her property she finally warmed up to us. We saw their vegetable garden, beautiful backyard and the pastures for the cattle, pigs and chickens. Food: 5/5 Stars The dinner that Vicki prepared was beyond amazing. Most of the vegetables she used were grown on the farm so that kind of freshness is hard to beat. Vicki prepared a beef stew with vegetables in a red wine sauce and it was delicious. I could have eaten a few helpings of that stew if I could. She also made a vegetarian version, but I didn't try that. In addition, they served white potatoes, fresh green beans and peas, salad and rolls. The fresh cooked peas were the best I've ever had and I could eat those for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The crisp cucumbers with mint and freshly baked rolls were delicious as well. One of their daughters baked the chocolate brownies for dessert that were served with home made vanilla ice cream. Atmosphere: 5/5 Stars A beautiful French country style home on a 14 acre farm with cows, pigs, chickens and a vegetable garden. The grounds and residence which we dined in was lovely. It was sort a shabby chic décor. They had two long distressed wood tables in the dining room that accommodated our group of 31. When dinner was over their daughters sang us two Welsh songs. Sophie & Izzy are incredible singers. Service: 5/5 Stars The whole family either cooked or served us dinner. I felt like a friend of the family and they are genuinely nice people. Recommendations: If you are looking for a B & B, a destination wedding spot or a booking for a large dinner party I would recommend the Sutton Mawr Farm. There are many reviews on Trip Advisor which will give you more information on the accommodations. They also have facebook page with lots of photos.

I LOVED this place! First off, this bed and breakfast REALLY is in a village--the kind you see in…read morethe movies! Harts Lane is so narrow, my partner hesitated pulling our car into the lane and then really had second thoughts about pulling into the tiny parking area. I was too busy loving everything I could see to care about that! Then, we walked into the bed and breakfast, where an out-of-breath Linda Smith greeted us warmly and apologized for not being ready. We didn't mind. After all, there were TWO pubs in one TINY village! ;) When we returned from our obligatory pub visit, Linda led us upstairs and to our room. Do you know how sometimes places look clean but don't smell clean? This clean room smelled GREAT! Then, I went into the bathroom. It was completely remodeled and very modern. I was in heaven! A quaint, clean bedroom with a clean modern shower! There was even a place for me to sit down in the bedroom and put on my makeup. I decided to use it for sitting down and reading a daily devotional, but just having this wonderful space was a plus. Did I mention there was a fireplace? The next morning, Linda cooked us "whatever we wanted." My partner happily ordered sausage and eggs, and I ordered bacon and eggs. While we waited, I looked around the family dining room. There were wonderful family pictures--Linda and Ian Smith's wedding pictures, their children, etc. My partner meanwhile marveled at his freshly squeezed orange juice and some of the woodwork in the room. Then, the food came. The bacon was the size of 4 American slices stuck together but a lot thicker. Everything was delicious, but after we ate, we felt like we needed a nap! If you go to this area of England, stay here! The Smiths are very congenial people, their accommodations are clean, their food is outstanding, and the village is picturesque. You'll swear you're in a movie.

It's not often that you stay at a place so good, you're inspired to contact Interflora to send…read moretreats to the very lady who organised the hotel for you. Well here's hoping I get the flowers to my mum-in-law before she reads this, because the lady needs to be thanked heartily. Locking Head Farm B&B deserves so much more than its three accommodation stars. Staying there feels like cosying up in the guest bedroom of a friend's house. The personal touches really make it, from the Cadbury Highlights (my favourite instant hot chocolate) in the tea and coffee making facilities WITH, I might add, a *full-sized* kettle, to the visitor's notebook, to the little brochure they've put together about their farm and the surrounding area, to the breakfast menu where you tick off your choice for the next morning. This is a family run business at its very best, right down to the little kids running about the place and the adorable family dog who will sit quietly next to you while you eat. The eating. Let me get onto that later, it needs an entire paragraph of its own. First of all, the story. So the significant other and I arrived here after a long and tiring journey from Manchester peppered with TalkSport Radio (gah!), argument-inducing car games like shag, cruise or marry, a horribly mediocre falafel panini from a service station Starbucks, far too many wine gums and a couple of disagreements about marriage and tradition. We travelled to these parts to attend a wedding, see. Driving down the farm path in the dark was an interesting experience, and we instantly had flashbacks from several horror movies. The sat nav said, "At the end of the road, turn left." I responded, "At the end of the road, you will see a hooded figure with a scythe." My companion exploded with nervous energy at that statement. However we were welcomed with open gate and open arms and led up to our room, given our breakfast menu to choose from and told to pop down if we needed anything. We were in Mendip. Ladies and gentlemen, this room is HUGE. Easily bigger than a studio apartment, with the softest sheets and towels I've ever had the fortune of laying myself upon or drying my delicate skin with. The TV? Glorious, in the perfect position next to a comfy sofa and lo and behold, Family Guy was on when it came to life. Then Lethal Weapon. I know this wasn't orchestrated by the B&B, but still... So the other half ordered a Full English, myself pancakes. Eggs in the breakfast come from the farm's own chickens, everything's locally sourced, and oh my word, these pancakes. I was silent. Freshly made, drenched in blueberry syrup with ripe warm blueberries scattered on top and stuffed inside. Not only is this included, but you get a bunch of cereals, yoghurts and fruits to choose from and get served hot toast as well as tea or coffee. And the next day after a taxi disaster returning from the wedding when we weren't able to pop anything on the breakfast menu, they served us the same again assuming that's what we'd want. So I got to have those unbelievable pancakes TWICE during my stay. Brilliant staff, great atmosphere, glorious location and reasonably priced - I'd recommend it to absolutely anyone and I'd go back to Weston-Super-Mare specifically for the purpose of staying there. Well done Locking Head Farm. /End uber-long gushing review!

I can't praise this place enough. Contemporary Regency decor for a sense of grandeur, Molton Brown amenities, heated towel racks, Hypnos luxury bedding, the best Eggs Benedict we had on our trip, organic cereals, a wide selection of premium Tiptree jams and curds, homemade fruit compote, perfectly fried bacon and sausages, gorgeous presentation, full French presses of excellent coffee, attentive service, organic peanut butter, different yogurts, plenty of fruit ... this place was a dream. Every square inch was spotless, and a private car park made it worth the safe and scenic 5-minute downhill walk to the town center. The hospitality was friendly, welcoming, personable, yet also professional. Huzzy and I agreed: we would come back to Bath just to stay here! Thank you James and Eliza for providing the best stay--even surpassing our Buckingham Palace hotel in London!--of our vacation.

When we arrived at the 139 in Bath, we were shown to the waiting room and served a nice beverage. The host knew exactly who we were and addressed us by name. We felt welcomed. The room was comfortable and beautiful- very classic in look. We had a great sleep on the bed, like I mentioned- comfortable room! Squeamish skip this paragraph... When I arrived in Bath I was deep into my trip and short on socks. The sock bag in my suitcase had reached critical mass and was going to be a new kind of 'Dirty Bomb'. When asked if the 139 had a washer and dryer, they said of course. They braved the bag. I got my socks back the next morning, folded. Thanks! Breakfast the next morning was wonderful- fresh eggs, great bacon, crunchy and chewy bread (ok so I'm not a food writer). Lots more options than a traditional eggs and bacon breakfast were available. Thanks 139 for a wonderful experience. It's been a couple years since we stayed, but the memory is fresh in my mind.

Forget the chintzy chains or the high class hotels that just treat you like a number, you become one of the family instantly. This terrace house was recently renovated into a boutique 7 room hotel. The rooms are well appointed, with free wifi, a TV and a DVD player. There's even an ipod dock / speaker for your Apple music goons. The beds were definitely comfy, and the linen fresh. The only thing I'd say was that the pillows were a bit too thick for my liking and gave me a bit of a neck crick the next day. (I usually sleep with relatively thin pillows though, and so at least maybe having that option would have been nice). Anyway, Helen greets you at the door (no matter what time of day you come - we were the last guests for the day) with the greatest smile and a gigantic dollop of Cardiff charm. We were knackered from a day of walking in the Brecon Beacons and were promptly shown how all the amenities in our room worked. The showers were great and everything looked new and well cleaned. The breakfast was continental, and while it would have been nice to have a fully cooked option included in the price (it costs £5 more and you have to order it the evening before), but a brief chat with Helen makes you understand why. She's passionate about the business and treating guests like family. This boutique hotel gives you great value for money, and a top notch level of service - although almost - just almost bordering on it being too much. Helen also knows the Cardiff area well and can be a great source of information for your travels in Cardiff. Parking is available and reservable in the rear of the house and the back room is well stocked with things to entertain you. I'd recommend Room 2 because of it's little veranda outside for you to sit in (when it's not pouring out like it was when we were there). Definitely will return and be a part of the history of Hotel One Hundred.
