When my husband spoke to a firefighter named Shawn, and was showing him video of what was occurring, he noticed the fire pit that usually has flames going quite high, as they also utilize a barrel sometimes with 2x4s to have more heat. That's usually done between July 4-September. Shawn had conveyed to him that he would speak with the chief and have the chief give us a call. That never happened. He also seemingly gave my husband the wrong information in regards to fire pits being illegal in the town, when quite frankly they are legal. So he stated that anytime they had a pit fire going to call them, they would put it out. They did no such thing, they allow it, and we were retaliated against for that on 6/18. One would think their own firefighters would know the laws, but that's seemingly again not the case. The police say they have to catch the fireworks like these bottle rockets found on our deck, gutters, and near our cars, and evidently fires in pits and the big barrels they pull out later in the summer are fine according to the fire department. I guess they have to wait until there is an actual fire from the sparks of both the barrel they pull out and the pit before they care and take it seriously.

This beautiful art piece is the ninth in the "Unconformity" series which Lydia Musco began making…read morein 2020, and the third in a smaller group within the series-based color and form impressions of the four seasons in her hometown. Lydia Jenkins Musco is an artist from New England whose work has been exhibited in galleries and outdoor spaces across the United States. It is located in Providence across from the popular Trinity Brewery and diagonal from the Providence Public Library. The shapes of each piece within the "Unconformity" series are the same and cast from the same mold, but within that form, everything changes from piece to piece. This sculpture, "Spring", contains forms and colors that have to do with the first glimpses of life within the landscape after winter. Stacking many individual pieces into a larger form was a logistical solution and simultaneously brought in a way to represent the layers of stories and memories that make up Musco's experience of moving through life. I found the visual experience very refreshing and very colorful...the way the sculpture "waves" makes the work of art very "catchy" to the eye. From her website, I can share some of the Artists Words: "With the action of building up the form again I'm reminded to consider how things have changed, both from my own perspective and in the bigger picture. Making helps me understand the world. Making helps me learn how things go together, how things come apart, how they stand, how they fall, how they interact, and helps me to see the world. There is so much to learn; I treasure every scrap of understanding I can get." The sculpture is made of Integrally pigmented concrete and it has a size of 68" × 20" × 10".

I wonder if his possibly less than eloquent name made him somewhat antisocial and perhaps paved the way for his renagedeness? Anyway, the text of this marker isn't exactly riveting. It touches on local geography, schools, churches, industry, and economy. I've seen a lot of similar markers that deliver a lot more oomph or interesting nuggets. This two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission has the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It's located on the front lawn of the First Congregational Church on Norwich Road. The marker is in pretty good condition -the front side is in very good shape with some fading and streaking on the reverse side..
In 1718, 22-year old Israel Putnam moved from MA to CT to be a farmer. He ended up in the military…read moreand served with distinction during the French and Indian War, rising to the rank of captain, and then major. But his greatest glory lay ahead. When British bullets killed Massachusetts colonists at Lexington and Concord, legend has it that Putnam became so enraged that he abandoned his plow in the field, jumped on his horse, and rode 100 miles to Boston to join the Revolution. He rose to the rank of Major General and led his troops in the Battle of Bunker Hill (where legend also has it that he uttered the immortal words "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes") and the Battle of Long Island. This fabulous monument has an 8 foot tall bronze statue of General Israel Putnam on his horse. The statue is mounted on s 20-foot tall granite base. It was dedicated on June 14, 1888 and it marks Putnam's grave. Check out the detail of Putnam's Revolutionary War uniform. You'll see boots, a tri-cornered hat, knee britches, and a coat with fancy epaulets. Of course he has a sword dangling from his belt. One interesting detail I saw on the base was a wolf head. Supposedly, as a boy Putnam crawled into a wolf cave and killed a wolf! Plaques on the base are inscribed as follows: Sacred be this Monument to the memory of ISRAEL PUTNAM, Esq. Senior Major General in the Armies of the United States of America, who was born in Salem, in the Province of Massachusetts on the 7th day of January, A.S. 1718 and died on the 29th of May A.D. 1790 Passenger, if thou art a soldier, drop a tear over the dust of a Hero, who ever attentive to the lives and happiness of his men dared to lead where any dared to follow. If a Patriot, remember the distinguished and gallant services rendered thy country by the Patriot who sleeps beneath this marble; if thou art honest, generous and worthy, render a cheerful tribute of respect to a man whose generosity was singular, whose honesty was proverbial; who raised himself to universal esteem and offices of eminent distinction by personal worth and a useful life.

"Sitting on a bench at Market Square, looking out at the Providence River, sketching in his sketchbook, I will capture a moment Edward Bannister repeated countless times in his life. The sculpture and plaque will create an encounter with him where people can sit and pose for pictures, whet their curiosity about his art, and enjoy the wonder and whimsy of imagining who this person was from the past. I want to help elevate him in Providence and beyond." Theses were the words of Gage Prentiss, the Sculptor of the Bannister Sculpture Bannister was born in November 1828 in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. His father was a native of Barbados, West Indies. In spite of his limited training and experience, Bannister was among Providence's leading painters during the 1870s and 1880s. He was well-liked and respected by his fellow citizens. On Jan. 9, 1901, Bannister died while attending a prayer meeting at his church. The Bannister Community Art Project, a collaboration with community leaders and organizations in Rhode Island was initiated to commemorate the life and legacy of the Black artist, Edward Mitchell Bannister, a founding member of the Providence Art Club (PAC). This is one of the main examples of this work. A beautiful statue in a beautiful setting on the river.
