i have been reading through the east bay express since i was in junior high as i would dream of th day i could get out and try the things i have read about so many times. as i got older it became more of bathroom reading for me as i seemed to mostly find it in or near restrooms. it became a very useful resource for great restaurants, music and movie reviews and best of all live concerts. the best part was they were right in my backyard. well ok just a drive down i580 or i680! i will admit it is fun to read the xxx, massage and all those great classifieds. it's always fun to get one of those numbers and call and leave them your best friends number. these days it's right outside the restroom at my work so all throughout the shift we find ourselves reading the east bay express when it gets on the slow side. ok we read it all darn night! read more

This was for a long time, one of my favorites. But, over the last 2 years, it has become obvious to me that this paper has turned into an advertising agency of a paper. The articles are fewer and fewer, the ads bigger and more. But bcuz I was a fan, I have saved to read later, bits and pieces of previous papers 2015 to 2019. Recently, I called what I thought was the Monthly, a beautiful little mag - paper with many many interesting pieces. The cover art was also great. But apparently something called Telegraph Media, or something like that, has gobbled up the Monthly, and some other smaller papers. So, now there's no Monthly anymore. And, I was told by a surly, hostile, smart mouthed staff member, that he would not even tell me what a basic minimum charge would be to place a classified ad. I'll try and sell things through other smaller newspapers. I do not take well to some guy telling me that " You're not listening ". No thanks. Now you listen ok ?, I will never place my ad with you. read more

While I am very thankful to the East Bay Express for publishing an article on our tango band and our new album, I am unimpressed by their endorsing discriminatory comments towards the Bay Area Argentine-Tango dance community. The article was entitled "Speaking Tango with Trio Garufa" and was written by Ms. Rachel Swan on May 30, 2012: http://www.eastbayexpress.com/ebx/speaking-tango-with-trio-garufa/Content?oid=3213823 The article is full of factual errors (see comments at the bottom) and offensive statements that seem to equate middle-aged people to "obsolescence". If these are the standards of East Bay Express, I must give them a one-star review. Discrimination is unacceptable. Factual errors are low quality. Typos are low class. read more

Although I've since moved away from the state, I still have a soft spot for the East Bay Express. It was the first rag I read while at Cal when I realized that the SF Chronicle was very light on news. I have always loved the pages of in-depth reporting on items that other newspapers would probably devote a few paragraphs to. It introduced me to Dan Savage, in whose column I proudly voted for the definition of Santorum. When I became interested in food, it was the East Bay Express' restaurant reviews that I devoured in order to know what's new in the restaurant scene on my side of the bay. While I don't miss the days of newspapers cluttering up BART, I still miss this paper. Thankfully, I can still read it online. read more

Great paper, loved the Yelp article and thank you for quoting my opinions on Yelp. Yelp is a monster, growing far to rapidly, with success begetting arrogance. And guess what, the're back again hounding me with yet another unsolicted sales call today. I guess they feel they are above criticism or the law. Your article certainly spelled it. Great job of reporting Yelp allows/encourages people with nothing better to do than write off the wall reviews that are unfair and unnecessary, but unstoppable Now lets see how long this review lasts. My review of yelp on yelp, all accurate, just not positive, lasted 24 hours. They are hypocrites and hope you will keep after them. read more

Interesting Yelp article! Yeah, heard about the sales reps from business owners..... Shame, Shame, Yelp Sales Dept. Pushy, pushy, and not very American of you. They should open Yelp Russia.... transfer those reps there. Bribery is part of the culture there from what I hear. They should fit right in. read more

The Express used to have those articles, say 10 years ago, that went on forever. Editing has been much tighter and better the last three years. When the Express does a piece that interests me, they do it very well. Cases in point recently: Robert Gammon's article about the Oakland police, the reporting on Don Perata that no one else has the balls to do, etc. Hey, who do you think exposed Your Black Muslim Bakery in an article about six years ago that no one else paid attention to? That's right, the Express. As the Chron and Tribune become more toothless, the Express is needed more. Even the "Cougar" article was well-written and had the right tone. Thank you Express! read more

Best place to find out what's going on in the East Bay. Newly an independent publication again, I have high hopes for their future.

The Express just threw the best party that Oakland has seen in a long time last Friday. There must have been at least 9,000 people there and it was awesome. They had things for kids, bands of all kinds, a circus, a dance hall with performers, skateboard ramps, live graffitti artists, food, beer, wine, and IT WAS FREE. Props to the Express throwing the BEST PARTY I HAVE EVER BEEN TO!!!!!!!! read more

Best local indie weekly in the entire Bay Area. Great journalists, events, local support. If only SF had a rag that was this good....

This is a great source for events happening in Oakland and the East Bay. I think their improved website is really good. I also like Robert Gammons positive and real takes on what is happening in Oakland as opposed to the usual crime and negativity stories printed about Oakland in most of the mainstream media. Overall 5 star either by print or by website. read more
