I was waiting to get lunch when I turned around to find this comic book store. Upstairs they have a lot of trade paperbacks and manga. But downstairs... That's where the treasure is. So many back issues. I was so frustrated that I didn't have more time and more space in my bag. I was worried about buying too much and having the books damaged in my bag on the plane. But I could have spent hours in that basement. What a store. The guy at the register was also very helpful and knowledgeable. If I ever come back to Dublin, I will make a point of returning to this store.

I then noticed a particular game which have been mulling over buying, Pandemic Legacy. Here they are selling it for 85 EUR. In a gaming shop around the corner it's 69 EUR. An Irish based gaming website is selling it for 60 EUR. It's madness pricing like this. If Gamers World wasn't around the corner and Sub City was priced more in line with online prices, I would shop here. Spend a little bit more to shop local. But 25 EUR more? Go way outta that. Needless to say Sub City was empty and Gamers World was jammers. It's presented well inside.

But the other week, with time to kill while my bicycle was being repaired, I went into Books Unlimited in Donaghmede Shopping Centre, albeit against my better judgment. And I have to admit that I was mildly surprised. Mildly pleasantly surprised. Not schocked; they hadn't added a SF wing overnight or anything. Books Unlimited is still the small local bookshop that sells manly school textbooks. But what they did have, and perhaps they've always had it but I've never really noticed it before, was a pretty big second-hand book shelf. Admittedly, these second-hand books were a good deal more expensive than in your local charity shop. Vincent's sell paperbacks 3 for a euro sometimes, but nevertheless, three books for a tenner from an actual profit-making bookshop still isn't bad going. And Books Unlimited have a lot more range than any charity shop I've ever been in. But still the ubiquitous Thomas Harris and Frank McCourt books. Has anyone ever noticed that? I guarantee you, go into any shop that sells second-hand books and you're bound to find 3 or 4 copies of 'Red Dragon' and 'Angelas Ashes'. Try it yourself. So yeah, if you're around Donaghmede, give Books unlimited a quick go.

As we walked by, we saw a sign that said, "Secret Book & Record Store", with an arrow pointing into a deep narrow hallway with posters of advertisements covering the walls. These places are the great finds in Dublin. At the end of the hall was a large room filled with used books, vintage vinyl & new releases including CDs. The store was a frezy of customers flipping through the bins of vinyl to find that one great band from their past. I did find a few old 80s punk albums but still on a quest today to find an original GBH or Exploited cover.

I have never taken and would never take a photo of inside a shop. The assumption that i was doing so today was so crankily put to me. I've learned over the years in books, Dublin and life that the beauty is often on the outside. Stokes appears to be now another example of it. I was so excited to come in to the shop having never been in my almost 30 years but this was quickly quelled.

See, it has to do with the stock inside. Behind the window and packing every dustless shelf, Stokes stocks an amazing range of Irish vintage publications. From Dublin City Council meeting minutes (vols 1850 - 1932) to Victorian picture books and souvenir albums of Edwardian countryside, its here. So refined is the selection (and so pricey, that picture book is €100) that it's incredible to re-discover every time I visitl! Must be down to that gruff bibliophile owner who's clearly got the idea on scene setting... I can't see this place as a used book shop, but I can't think of it being anywhere else.
