As a first time visitor to Ireland, I had no idea really where to go or what to focus on outside of the majors cities. What I did know was that riding a horse in such a beautiful place had to be a "must do". I had heard so much about the Ring of Kerry, that I decided to look for a place we could ride on the beach. I feel so fortunate that we found EREC.
I sent an email and heard back quickly from Caroline who owns the place. She was very friendly and accommodating. We emailed back and forth and settled on the Friday before the Ring of Kerry Cycle that was happening the following day. We rearranged our travel so we could be down there a day early and I'm so glad we did.
We arrived at Noon and were greeted immediately by Caroline. She brought us upstairs and fitted us out with boots and helmets and we were ready to roll. The horses saddled and ready. We mounted up and headed out with Caroline and one of the young girls who work for her.
The horses are all well taken care of and she puts you on the right horse for you based on your experience. The trek we took led us across some beautiful grass fields, into the sound (at low tide) where we cantered across the sand that mirrored the sky. It looked as though we were riding on top of the water. We rode through more beautiful field and then onto the white sand beach where the water is crystal blue.
Caroline is quite friendly and we chatted about our mutual experience riding horses. She once rode show jumpers and on the track. She was also a groom for the Irish National Team during the '84 Olympics in Los Angeles.
We went out for what seemed like just over an hour and we saw so much. It was the perfect trek. You forget when you haven't ridden how much work riding is on the legs.
I forget the name of her dog, a Terrier/Collie mix. Cutest Dog ever. Loves it when you kick a rock for her. She chases after it and then attacks it. Drives everyone there crazy, but fun for visitors.
Price is more than reasonable and I left her a little more than a 10% tip for the excellent service and conversation.
