My mother informed me I would have a new teacher, since my former teacher had killed herself and that she was going to burn in Hell. What a scary thing to say to a child!! I was horrified. During another grade level, another teacher made me go into a small dark closet, spanked me with a paddle and left me locked inside the closet for a very long time. She had accused me of speaking when I should not have been speaking, which was a complete lie. These days, if a teacher hits a child, then it is considered child abuse and is punishable by law! These were suppose to be "good" Christians... but actions speak louder then words in this case! Oh, and the horrible stories I heard from my parents and their friends regarding Jerry Falwell Sr. pressuring members of his Thomas Road Baptist Church to remortgage their homes in order to contribute more money to his greedy needs. I was so thankful when my family finally moved away from Lynchburg, VA and I no longer had to attend that scary abusive school!

If you have a child with this diagnosis, they will deal with it no better than any public school has to offer. They do not understand, and very clearly displayed, that they have no interest in truly understanding. They treat anxiety and peaceful shut downs with threats and disciplinary action instead of following an established IEP. Worse, they will make you believe, especially the assistant dean, Tom Powers, that they understand and have a grasp of the issues, and give you hope after a long road. Only to do no better than your average public school system. Which is actually worse when you and your child think you may actually have found a safe, supportive space. I'm a mental health therapist and mom, with experience and education in working with autism. And I spent a considerable amount of time at this school. Much of the staff have beautiful hearts. But judgmental of what they do not understand and do not seek to understand. If your child has high functioning autism, look elsewhere, or if you give this a try and your child is struggling, it is not your child. This school is simply not equipped or willing to be equipped and educated in order to understand and act accordingly and appropriately in your child's best interests.
