My daughter is 35 and mentally handicapped. We're staying in Blowing Rock for a few days so we decided to find a place to go horseback riding. We found Dutch Creek Trails so I called to see if they could accommodate her needs. Without hesitation the answer was yes. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. Our trail lead, Steve, was awesome with her. He kept her horse tethered to him the whole ride as he was talking her through everything she needed to do. He was very patient. In fact, the entire staff treated her and us with so much care. The horses were well taken care of and gentle. We recommend Dutch Creek Trails because they went out of their way to make our experience a treasured memory. In the attached pictures I wanted to include Steve with Katie. He gave her a horseshoe. Great experience! Took my daughter (11) for her first time riding and she had such a great time that she hasn't stopped talking about it since we left yesterday. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the trail was a little treacherous at times especially for a beginner. But the guides were great and talked us through every step. I know nothing about horses, but these folks do! Very knowledgeable and watchful, they will put the most nervous rider at ease. My 6 and 9 year old nieces got to ride their own horses and loved it. We had a great visit, I sat with my wife and dogs and enjoyed the beautiful sunny weather while the rest of the family took over an hour ride. This is not some pony ride in a circular corral, this is you, on a horse, on a trail, in the mountains, with great views. As it should be. We had one fall, no injuries, be brave like my 6 year old niece and just do it. Both girls really loved the day and helped brush the horses afterwards. I really loved this day. This was truly an amazing experience!! I was a little concerned when I saw a few negative reviews. The only thing I can figure is the people that left the negative reviews are not nature or animal lovers. The trail guide Amanda was very confident, careful, informative, personal and made us feel very comfortable. Having a child with us I could not have asked for more. She would explain every turn and how to control the horse. You can tell the horses are very use to the terrain. The views are also another bonus!!! read more

We went as family of 10 on a beautiful Spring day to ride at Dutch Creek. We ranged in ages from 8 to 70 years old. We had the best time! This is a great family owned business. We accidentally arrived an hour early with 6 kids so Keith showed us how to use the swing hanging from the tree near the office. Travis helped introduce us to the horses but Jess led our tour. After we got on and stirrups adjusted, we were off to the trail. We were given instructions at the hills whether up or down on what to do. We stopped at one spot for a group picture with Grandfather Mountain in the background. Before we left, they had a gift for the kids! My wife and I made this trip to be part of an annual trek to see the fall colors in the mountains. The staff and horses were excellent my particular horse, Grady, was especially gentle and easy to ride. He followed commands very easily and kept us on path without any problems at all. From the very first phone call with Keith to our tractor ride with Travis and then our actual trail ride with the crew... it was fantastic! Super friendly and welcoming team, we can't wait to go back. The place is easy to get to, signs when you arrive direct you to the house where you check in. Once everyone with your group is ready, there is a very short tractor/trailer ride to the stalls. The horses were all very well trained, I felt safe the entire ride. We rode a few months ago and I've been back and forth about posting a review. Making a reservation was easy, but when we arrived at our time only one of our guides, Alex, was there. He gave us a quick briefing and worked alone to get us saddled up. About 20 minutes into it, the rest of the crew arrived and began helping us. Travis assisted my daughter who was new to horseback riding and very anxious. At one point I repeated the advice given to us by our guide Alex to help her calm down. Travis responded by telling my daughter, "Don't listen to your mom. She doesn't know what she's talking about. This horse is going to do whatever it wants to do." Which he followed up with some other unintelligible speech that I couldn't decipher. Fortunately, no one got hurt but I felt uncomfortable and scared for my kids for most of the ride. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

I realize this is someone's business and I don't take giving this review lightly. Let me start with the good things. The booking and responsiveness of the owner before and at arrival were wonderful! I'm so sad this ride was a bad experience. I really wanted to like it and for my kids to have a good time. :( This is NOT a trail ride for inexperienced riders. I feel like that should be mentioned. I grew up with and broke (trained) horses as a young adult so please know that my review comes from a great deal of experience with horses. I'm not sure how this place gets its good reviews...or maybe there are new employees & horses...but this place is NOT safe. I have two kids 7 & 8 years old. They have little experience with horses. We made sure the guide knew that, but my kids (and the other riders...all inexperienced) got absolutely no horse safety training. The guides didn't explain how to get on the horses correctly or even how to safely approach a horse. Furthermore, riders were not given any tips or techniques for controlling their horse. All of this was concerning to me, but I thought "well, maybe this is a true nose to tail trail ride and these horses won't need much guidance." WRONG! My two kids were given green broke (barely trained) horses. These horses were breaking into fast trots and passing other horses on the trail. My 8 year old was absolutely TERRIFIED and how she didn't fall off is simply a miracle!! After her mount took off running up the rocky trail, I insisted that I trade horses with her. I'm still completely confused why my 8 year old would be given a horse that was out of control! The only thing I can guess is that the guides had no experience themselves, which was probably the case b/c they gave very little guidance to anyone. Okay...now let's get to the trail! It was a very rocky, muddy mountain trail. Very dangerous for an inexperienced rider on a green broke horse. Please, please don't take your kids or inexperienced riders in this ride! read more

Our group was unusually small with just my husband and I and another couple which was great. The ride was a little over an hour, up and back down a mountain. I went on a guided trail ride with my daughters (ages 14, 12, & 9). My oldest daughters have riding experience, but my yougest and I do not. It was lots of fun and our guides were great! The horses are very docile and well cared for. The trail was challenging - lots of uphill/downhill & rocky terrain. However, even my nine year old did just fine (although she has no experience and was nervous at first). The staff did a great job pairing riders with appropriate horses and were very friendly. It is a bit pricey at $50 per rider, but I do feel like it is worth the money. Horses are expensive to care for and the ride lasted over an hour. If you are looking for a different kind of adventure around the Boone/Blowing Rock area, give Dutch Creek a try! read more

We were in the area for the weekend and stumbled upon this place after searching for nearby horseback riding. First, the ride up to the trails was breathtaking. We were pleasantly greeted by Travis' dad who assisted with the paperwork. Then, we headed down to the stables to meet our horses. My children and myself are extreme amateurs - so, I was a bit nervous. Manny and Travis were very informative and helped calm my nerves. The actual ride was amazing - hard to describe in words: thrilling, exciting, fun, legit, and one of the most memorable activities during our visit. We came with family, 3 adults and 1 tween. We called last minute so our first choice was booked. We had to go with Dutch Creek because they had availability. We knew we were taking a risk based on reviews but our tween was insistent. Almost completely regretting the choice to ride. Though the ride had a pretty view at the top, you only got to enjoy it for 2 minutes, the rest of the ride was a pretty rough trail. The horses seemed unkempt and the trails rough on them. The people were nice but not customer oriented. We had to ask questions, there was no "guide" per say. Two people went out on the trail with us, but half of the time the rider in back ran off and went a different way, one time leaving the tween in the back. All in all if you just want to ride horses, then you'll be fine. But if you are looking for a well guided tour where you feel like they are catering to your safety and your enjoyment, this is not the place to go. read more

My sister and I went on a trail ride at Dutch Creek Trails near Boone, NC. It was an hour-long ride over fairly steep terrain. The horses were very sure footed and gentle.
