It's not a bar. It's not a club. It's a time machine!…read more No, but... this is true. If I'd actually gone to look in a mirror in this place I'd have expected to see a blunt fringe, pink streaks in my daftly long hair and a Hello Kitty shirt. On the ten year anniversary of my entry into college, a period during which I had a love affair with a bar called Aqualenium, I visited Opium with one of those same college friends and weirdly, spookily, crazily enough the jukebox seemed to consist solely of what was playing on MTV2 between 2000 and 2002. Did it know we were coming?!? Like its namesake, this place has the effect of being somewhat addictive. It's loud, it's fun and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Plus there's nothing remotely scary about it (unless you count the sticky floor and the strange black substance which ended up on my shoes - Chris explained to me that this is what happens in Opium) and it's actually rather welcoming. The cheaps as chips prices appeal to everyone, never mind the students, the night we were there the music was more mass appeal than terrifying, and although it's small there are plenty of corners in which to hang out and people-watch. Anytime I need to feel seventeen again, I'll hotfoot it over here. Just remind me not to look in a mirror for the duration - it's one thing feeling ten years younger, but looking it would involve some major life choices and a bank balance of infinity! Or a stint on a Channel 4 reality show. Neither of which I'm quite ready for yet.

You get what you pay for, simple as…read more Free entry and cheap drinks, a funny mixture of interesting people, two areas with different types of music. It is a no frills, cheap and fun venue for a few drinks or dance.

I always feel like I'm a trend behind when it comes to Optimo at the Sub Club. I'm wearing neon,…read moreeveryone else in in gingham- I stock up on the 'country gal' style and all of a sudden it's sequins....I'm never cool enough! The sub-club is a favourite haunt of the Glasgow art school set so expect this uber trendy vibe. Unless you are the pulse here, you will never be on it! Still, an awesome night out!

Been here a zillion times, though as with clubbing in general it's not really on my radar as much…read morethese days. If you're into banging, yet credible dance music, then Sub Club is probably still your best bet in Scotland. It's won various awards over the years, none of which I can remember. To be honest, I just don't get the exceptionally repetitive thudding of Saturday nights, and as good as Optimo was, once the style of music they played inadvertently became trendy, it lost much of what made it good in the first place. I've been to a couple of Drum n Bass nights which have been pretty good, but possibly not worth the headaches and the ringing in your ears afterwards. I did once get a shot at DJing in here on a Subcity night, and despite it being practically empty, the fact that I got everyone dancing to my favourite TLC tune, summed up the club for me. The punters are pretty open to anything, and don't give a toss as long as it sounds good. You can't ask for much more than that in a club.

I've been to the Liquid Rooms more times than I could count, for all sorts of gigs over the years…read more And I still love it. Sure, your feet will always stick to the floor, but that's just part of the charm of this place. It's quite an intimate space, great for smaller acoustic gigs, but also works really well for electronica etc. There's also a balcony, with its own bar, if you fancy a higher view. For anyone from Glasgow, it's like a cross between Oran Mor and the Fruitmarket. And gets just as hot and sweaty as they do!

Here to see the mighty Brendon Burns during the Fringe, so review based on that, may not be the set…read moreup all year round, buyer beware, etc. etc. Head down Victoria Street, before you get to The Bow Bar (I navigate by pubs, btw) and turn left down an alley, into a courtyard. There's the Liquid Rooms Annexe experience for you! The courtyard part is quite nice, all covered and open air so you can feel continental and drink outside, even with Edinburgh weather attempting to drop every bit of water in the country on you in one go. The bar? I've had way better to be honest. Just cans, bottles and spirits - again, I'm not sure if that's just part of the Fringe set up or not, so it may just be a temporary thing. In any case, at least it's not a shockingly high price to be handed a can, but it is a bit more than you would maybe expect. Venue wise, I liked the Annexe for atmosphere. For a smaller show, this would be ideal - close to the stage (perhaps a little too close to Brendon in some case for the poor folk in the front and second row!) and great sound. It is warm down there though, really warm, so be careful with your hydration in case you take a turn, but other than that, it's fine. It doesn't blow me away, but it does have a little bit of something that not every place does - and that's soul.

When we walked through the pub Edward's via the Renfield Street entrance it was so cringy as the music was awful and the clientele was em.... Anyway, we headed up the stairs to Reflex and my ears loved me lots. The music is awesome and they have many teles dotted round the room playing them classic 80s music videos. It was brilliant but why you ask I only give it 3 stars. Well it was a Saturday night and it was mobbed. We were getting pushed about, people being rude to us and we ended up standing in the middle of the club trying to just find a wee spot we could huddle round and keep together. There was also other hen parties so it was pretty mental. It took ages to get served at the bar as they also sell crazy 80s accessories. Madonna boobs anyone?! We coudn't really dance much, there is a dance floor but you kinda wanted somewhere to put your stuff so felt we couldn't go up as were hanging onto our drinks and coats. I do really like this place and I would go back but maybe when it's not as mental. It's a good alternative compared to some of the dancing clubs you get in Glasgow. So get your Madonna boobs on and Vogue!

The fashion of the 80s is usually one I like to forget - neon colours, leggings, shoulder pads and…read moreshell suits urgh - but on special occasions it is fun fun fun to unleash that hideous past (which sadly seems to be returning) and this is what I chose to do on one of my birthdays. Booted out in some 80s gear we headed to Reflex and were immediately entranced by the tracks of the 80s. The videos of the songs are played on screens around the venue providing a giggle at some of those hairdos! With the drinks menu mainly consisting of cocktails we made our way through some interesting looking jugs (sadly they were not at 80s' prices - but about average really). We all got into the swing of it buying much of the novelty merchandise (I still have my "Frankie says Reflex" t-shirt). The crowd was mixed with a lot of older people who loked like they did belong in the 80s but they only added to the authenticity. We moved on after a while (seeking our noughties-comforts) but it was fun while it lasted - just like the 80s!
