Built specifically for the State Theatre Company in 1974 and named after the father of "The Festival State", the Playhouse seats approximately 600 people over two levels and has an intimate theatre setting. My favourite place to watch plays and productions, I've always enjoyed the up close nature of the seating and the acoustics are fabulous.
The State Theatre Company hosts their season here and some of my favourite productions were showcased here; Chekhov's Three Sisters, Brookman's Toy Symphony, God of Carnage, The Complete works of William Shakespeare and The Blonde, the Brunette and the Vengeful Redhead. All these feature the immense capabilities of the space as well as the close proximity of a breathless audience.
The Adelaide Railway station is a hop, skip and a jump away and with 90% of SA buses running down King William Road, the Playhouse is easily accessible by public transport. Parking is available on site in the Festival centre carpark or along Hindley street. Close to restaurants and the beautiful Rymill Park, take your time in choosing somewhere to eat and chill pre and post show.
