The place was crowded with tourists (Surprise, surprise) but it doesn't matter. The staff were helpful and proactive at cutting the line down. After much deliberation, I ended up picking some Butter Fudge up just for the beautiful silver and blue tin. I can't wait to drop back in to collect more darling tins, foreign candies and souveneirs for home.

All of the standard favorites: humbugs, sherbet dips, chocolate-covered everything, fruit-shaped everything...you get the idea. But imagine my absolute surprise when I spied a shelf stocked with American candy, cereals, and snacks...including my favorite: Cheetos. Not even 48 hour prior, I was telling my husband that I would go to obscene lengths to have a bag of Cheetos, so strong was my craving for the vile snack food. Little did I know that all I needed to do was go to Oxford and visit Hardy's. Sorted! Now excuse me while I go wash the orange from my fingers...

The man behind the counter was so in character! Sadly, not all of the employees dress like this, but just that one experience was good enough for me. I'm sold! I will always stop by this place when I visit England! They have packaged candy as well as hand-made chocolates! Both of which are delicious! I was also happy to see that they had sugar-free chocolate. Some of my family members are diabetic, so I was looking for something they could enjoy too. Mr. Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe was perfect! The idea for this aladdin's cave of sugary delights came from a sepia photograph the owners saw on a confectionnary newspaper. And when you walk through its doors you'll see how authentically fifties this sweet shop is. The owners of the shop obviously love what they do, and will enthusiastically talk you through all their stock and help you make your choice. Hooray Monica R - we agree on the spelling! Well, you can imagine this shop right at the end of the Willy Wonka factory tour. Rows upon rows of clear jars containing old style sweets. The assistants are happy to advise and offer little tastings. Your choice of goodies are packaged in retro style paper bags to take away and share. Whether you're looking for some nostalgia about the sweets you grew up with or to discover some new taste sensation, Mrs Kibble's is definitely worth a visit.

But they also had a nice assortment of teas. It made a great place to pick up a gift for my wife, who is an avid tea-lover. The staff there was also quite pleasant which made the visit all the more enjoyable. The only downside I noted was that it was a small shop. The Sunday afternoon I was there, it was quite crowded and difficult to navigate because of the number of bodies inside. But the end result was worth the effort.

I'm not sure whether I remember penny sweets as correctly being a penny when I was a child (i think some of them had migrated to two pence by then!) but it is a tad expensive. Anyway, the treats are tasty - just save your pennies before visiting!
