This is as sweet as it gets! Candy store after candy store…read moreline Av 6 Oriente. There are dozens of tiny candy shops all up and down this street. It's really hard to believe that there are so many that they have a candy street here, but there's apparently demand for it! They sell all kinds of wonderful sweets here- so many of them make me jittery from all the sugar! Mexican sweets tend to be sweeter than what Americans are used to. They're packed with tons of sugar! I felt like a kid in a candy store! Personally, my favorite are the ones made from caramel and wafers of goat milk crackers. Other favorites include the jellied fruit candies, and coconut candies. I went looking for chocolate covered grasshoppers, but nobody had 'em. Most of the candies were by the kilo, but some had them sold individually, and none of the stores seemed to mind selling a few pieces for a small handful of pesos. The clerks were all friendly, but they didn't give out samples. This is the place to go for souvenirs and sweet tooths alike.

I thought there would only be a handful, but the whole street on both sides had only candy shops. We got a sugar cookie at one of them and then at another we got a small box of camotes (flavored sweet potato bars, a specialty of Puebla) to take home.

Chocoholics unite! This seems to be place that the local…read morepeople go to for professionally made, hardcore candy. This isn't just the local stuff that the locals are known for eating. The local candy tends to be more sweeter, less refined chocolates, with candied fruits, caramels, or goat milk. Often, mixed with fruit or nuts. The stuff here was different from the other shops, in that they sold much more finer chocolates, things that had hard candy shells, and more vibrant colors than the more natural candies being sold from the other local sweet shops on Sweets Street. These guys sell their sweetness by the gram or the kilo. It seems like you could spend a month of Sundays in here, and never get to try all the flavors. My sweet tooth yearns, but pancreas hurts just thinking about it!
