Communication and the clarity are poor. The experience with violin instructor, Ana, was unpleasant. She showed little patience to the point where my daughter was put off the violin. When approaching Ana, asking her to extend patience to the student, she gave us a "this is how I am, take it or leave it" type of response. We are very disappointed.

It's hard to rate this place like any other music school or business in the area. Its function (not…read moreits "mission") is to teach arts and music to the community at a very reasonable rate (the community is rather underprivileged and this place is a real gem). So what is it that they offer? It seems like everything under the sun. They have a choir, a folklorico group (I think), and some other public/non-enrolled groups. Quality teachers instruct in instrumental education at a reduced rate for kids, including but not limited to strings, woodwinds (though I see less of them and haven't seen any brass players, but you probably should call to find out), piano and percussion. They are also respected for their voice instruction, as Alison Iraheta from American Idol some seasons ago was instructed here. However, it's not just instrumentation and music that they teach, they also have a drama class and several other seasonal rotating classes. Additionally, one of the most spectacular things about this school is their summer camp program (camp MusArt). The program has some great staff and instructors, and they usually have two months (1 section per month) and a production for each section (a fully staged musical) by the kids. Howe we, last summer they were only able to manage one section because LAUSD has screwed up their schedules with their budget issues forcing kids to go back to school at different times. The last show was the Wizard of Oz, prior to that they've done Mary Poppins, the Lion King, Mulan, West Side Story, etc. every year it's a treat for the kids to participate. It is hauntingly beautiful yet cacophonous (in the best way) - a visual, sonic, and story telling adventure. I recently just watched a musical here at the Ahmanson Theatre here in Los Angeles…read more I've been here once before many years ago to watch Mary Poppins. I don't live too far away from here but it's always a trek coming down to downtown LA. And the tickets I received is said to park in the music center garage. Parking was $10 and really efficient. It took a while to get our bearings to find out where we could park and what was available. And at the very end, it was actually pretty efficient to get out of there as well. We're on level P6 and we were directed to go down towards the lower level and everything was very efficient to then come back up to the surface.. It's a beautiful venue. It's not huge, but they're able to make great use of the space. We sat in the balcony and got a great view and we were able to see everything fairly well. There are lots of concession stands throughout and you're even able to pre-order drinks and snacks and beverages for the intermission. Overall, it's a great venue, it's even closer to me than the Pantages, where they have a lot of other musicals as well. We caught a great show here too. This is definitely a hidden gem that I'll be excited to come back to again in the future when there are future events. Everything is so well organized and it was a great experience.

Positives: -If you're driving, once you get through traffic to DTLA it's just off the freeway with beyond reasonable parking at $10. If you're taking public transit its not a far walk from the Civic Center/Grand Park stop; roughly 10 minutes. -They have a 15% processing fee for online ticket purchases vs 20% at the Pantages. Negatives: -They do programs here vs playbills so as a collector it's a really big letdown that it won't fit in your playbill binder, frame, etc. as the programs are larger. -Esthetically it has almost a collegiate lecture hall vibe to it with the wood paneling and tan seats. There's no drama or emotion within the building. -The staff here seems less invested in the productions. I've only been to 2 shows and the staff didn't seem to be consistent/care if people were filming the show on their phones. I saw them approach one person in front of me but allowed another person a few seats over to film. Any other theatre I've been to in LA or New York they are very strict about filming with some even making you delete the video immediately in front of them. -Each row is about 30-45 seats so if you're in the middle you're either stuck or going to be bothering a lot of people to exit. Contrast this to the Pantages which is on average 7-14 seats.

The place was lively and had a great atmosphere. They have a nice selection of beers, and there's a pizza spot right next door, which is a huge plus. You can grab some food and take your drinks inside while enjoying the show. I was also really impressed with the sound quality. Everything came through clear and the venue has a great setup for live bands. Between the music, drinks, pizza, and overall vibe, we had a great time. Definitely a cool LA music spot.
