Great in the summer, late spring and early fall but worth avoiding from November to April unless you are going to Trader Joe's. This is a place to savor a donut. My wife and I went here this past weekend basically to see what all the hype was about - so we had very high expectations going in. The line was very long at around 4pm on a Sunday. We ran in after a movie right before closing at 9pm thinking we would grab any dounuts that were left in the case. We were surprised to find there is no "display" case, because all of the donuts are made to order!!! Hot and fresh!! We didn't want to keep them opened after closing time, but the employees insisted that it was absolutely no problem. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and the donuts were absolutely delicious!!! The best compliment I can give is going back the next day for more! I was lucky enough that the General Manager and franchise owner were there on my second visit so I could tell them how amazing our experience was. The donuts are great and super tasty! But recently I went in there and got a large iced latte with my donut. The young girl behind the counter looked like she hadn't been properly trained to make coffee drinks and ended up putting one shot of espresso and a whole cup of milk. Two girls were making donuts and when my donut was ready, I asked one of them to remake it. They looked at me as though they didn't understand what I meant. Thankfully one of them did actually make me a new one. Amazing donuts. We were so happy to hear that Duck Donuts was coming to Charlottesville, and after one visit I can say that they've managed to uphold the original's outstanding reputation. Donuts were served hot out of the deep fryer with warm gooey frosting of your choosing. The best donut you will have, bar none. As someone who knows the donut business, this place is hands down the best! We have been to the original Duck Donuts in North Carolina and this location even exceeds those. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. They make the donuts fresh in front of you and their speed of service, even during mad rushes, in unmatched. I have been to this establishment a few times, but the visit on 5/21/15 was not as great as it should be. First, my order was messed up totally and had to be re-done. When re-done, it was still not correct; the sprinkles that were to be put on the donuts were the wrong kind and peanuts put on donuts I did not ask for. I GAVE UP...I have other things to do. Next time, the people that are doing the order need to LISTEN. I am ALLERGIC to coconut and it could have been a real problem. Don't know when or if I am going back again. Not impressed. read more

LOVE this place. My family and I have always gone to Duck Beach in the Outer Banks for Thanksgiving. They have a Duck Donuts there that I believe is the sister restaurant to Duck Donuts in Charlottesville. It's such a fun atmosphere and they always deliver the best, freshest donuts! Coincidentally the first time I went to the one in Charlottesville it was National Donut Day and we were given a free donut... free things are always a plus! OK Folks.. I see the incredibly positive reviews but after visiting Duck Donuts I must say that either I don't get it or it was a very bad morning. Donuts are our friends.! We like donuts but what was presented to me were far from those golden pillows of love and warmth. The outside was dark and crispy. The inside was doughy and uncooked. Ah Ha.. Cooking oil was too hot.. As for the "toppings", well, all one could taste was confectioner's sugar. Maple tasted like sugar; vanilla tasted like sugar and both were gritty as if the sugar hadn't melted. Coffee was TERRIBLE.!!! Thermos pump deal that, while hot, tasted of old grounds. The folks working there (and there seem to be a great many of them) were friendly but the "yelling" of "Welcome to Duck Donuts" when a customer enters can be a bit wearing.. The duck mascot/logo is, however, very innovative. So maybe it was a bad morning at Duck Donuts. Not sure.. But bad days do not repeat customers make.. Duck Donuts is not terrible but if what I experience is the "norm" then it's not worth the stop. Sorry Duck Donuts.! read more

This is a fun and welcome addition to the "donut family" in Charlottesville. They generally can produce your custom-made donut order pretty quickly, but don't expect a "take-it-off-the-shelf-and-and-into-the-bag" experience. They offer LOTS of flavour variations and many seasonal and daily favorites. I didn't like the coffee quite as much, but we go there for an occasional treat. Favorite is the cinnamon and sugar donut. Duck Donuts is amazing! Whenever I am in Charlottesville I make it an effort to stop by and get a dozen. The donuts are fresh, hot, melt-in-your-mouth and can be customized any way you like from a variety of hot icings and toppings. Friendly employees, delicious donuts, but we will not return. The problem? Lack of organization makes service slooooooow. We went before the Sunday church crowd rush and still waited over 30 minutes.
