If you have grown tired of fish, chips, burgers and local UK grub, give this location a try. We got the pork belly, jerk chicken (white), steak and fried chix. The meals average £20/plate. Alcoholic drinks avg £6-£7.

The restaurant itself is vibrant and exciting with a friendly and lively buzz about the place. For starters we had salt-fish fish cakes and jerk chicken wings. Those fish cakes where the best fish cakes I have ever eaten. Delicately flavoured, cooked to perfection and tasted wonderful. Even though they where made from salt fish they where not overly salty. The flavours where well balanced and complimented each other beautifully. The jerk chicken came in a very moorish and very tasty jerk gravy. Now I know traditionally jerk chicken is not supposed to come in a gravy or a sauce, but this was exceptional. Every now and then a restaurant has to push the boundaries of what is the norm in its cuisine and I like that. This was definitely one of those occasions and it paid off big time. It did as expected have a kick to it but with the accompanying yoghurt and mint dip to cool things down that did take the edge off. For mains I had the curried goat and white rice. We also had the slow cooked jerk pork belly with rice and peas. To accompany the mains we had two portions of the sweet fried dumplings. The goat curry tasted wonderful. Again very well flavoured and not too overpowering. Sometimes you can get a curried goat that knocks your head off and you find yourself guzzling down glasses of mile and fresh orange juice for the next fortnight, but this was spot on. Not a single scrap was left. The pork belly was beautifully cooked and fell away at the touch of a knife. All in all this was a fantastic lunch. Not too pricey either and it is well worth making a special journey for. I'll definitely be returning and I'd gladly recommend this place to anyone who wants fantastic Caribbean home cooking.

I ordered the curry goat with rice & peas and was really disappointed. Had someone forgot to put the curry in ? I always like the look of an open kitchen and watched the cooks prepare our meals with sullen faces. This is not what the Caribbean is all about. They heard my comment that I was unimpressed with the dish and thee service went downhill from there. For dessert we ordered apple pie and custard..this caused a disturbance in the kitchens and eventually we were served two small ramekin dishes with apple purée in covered in some gritty crumble with a dollop of custard. Then they had the audacity to charge us £5 each for these which they obviously had just thrown together. By now I was seething but my brother dragged me out as he doesn't like to cause a scene. Nothing like momma used to make and I'm sure other patrons who have no experience of how fine Jamaican food can be will find this heavenly. Plantation does it better and so do many more.

The outside decking is absolutely perfect on a warm Spring/Summer day but a meal inside on a winter's day will not have the same grandeur. It's not that it's particularly bad inside, it's simply just not the same experience. The food is actually good enough to eat anywhere - the curried goat, chicken and saltfish are almost unbelievable and very, very reasonable. There is little to no reason to travel to South Bristol if you're not a City fan, which makes Quba Ice's popularity even more of a statement. Just make sure it's summer when you visit.
