I had to come here for a lifeguarding class and it was DISGUSTING. The deck of the pool was…read moreextremely disorganized, the pool water was sometimes cloudy and i'm pretty sure I saw a used tampon in it, and there were bugs flying and crawling all around. Not to mention, the floors were all grungy, especially in the locker room. DONT COME HERE IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER OPTION!!

Tommy is the owner of Seahorse Swim Club. In my opinion, he is the best teacher. I would highly…read morerecommend him to teach adults or children how to swim. Even the fearful children who cries due to water phobia and refuses to get into the pool, Tommy is the one who has a special talent and can persuade and teach with ease. I have withnessed it personally with my seven year old son. He would patiently teach the swimming techniques and follow through with the repetitive strokes, whether it is free style, backstroke, breaststroke. Can you believe my son, who almost drowned last summer, can now swim freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke? I am very appreciative to Tommy and Seahorse Fitness. The facility is neatly setup with towel and shower stalls. The indoor pool is consistently about 75-78 degrees temperature all year round. There are lap swimming lanes and general swim sessions. All swimmers must use goggles and swim caps. The locker room is a little bit outdated, but I believe the primary focus is the teaching staff and lifeguards on duty. There is always a lifeguard everytime I visit. The instructors are very capable, friendly, patient and experienced. Each instructors have their own specialty. One teaches butterfly extremely well. Another teaches breaststroke very well. I had each demonstrake their best qualities and taught my kids. Thank you Tommy and Seahorse Fitness!

I've felt like this place was a bit of a secret. I remember when I stumbled upon it during an…read moreadventurous bike ride. I was a bit ashamed I'd missed it after living in Carroll Gardens for so many years. It's in an obscure location (covering half the block on Nevins from Douglas to DeGraw - get it Double-D). While it is a city pool and they have a few rules they're strict about, you get an overall solid experience. Never TOO crowded, great sun exposure all times of the day and friendly staff. It's not a resort, so don't kid yourself that you can come lounge out, get your tan on and listen to some tunes. If you want to swim in a clean and properly maintained pool for FREE you could do a lot worse. There are 2 pools! There is a 1 foot deep kiddie splash around pool that has a completely separate gated zone (and a covered bench area for Mom or Dad). The other is a full size 3 foot deep pool with a dedicated swimming laps lane on the Western side. Rules that are important: - You have to wear swim trunks (not just shorts) - meaning it has to have a liner - You have to bring a lock (and show them upon entering) - You can't bring anything to the pool but yourself, sunblock and a towel - Shirts worn can only be white (in the pool area) - You must shower briefly before entering the pool area (it's cold so get ready) If you are there during noon time, there is an NYC provided lunch available. Often they seem to have extras and want you to take it. It's not Court Street Grocer, but your kid may eat it and at least get a healthy piece of fruit. Pro tip: It's closed from 3-4 PM daily for cleaning, so get there exactly at 4 PM to get some uncrowded time in.

They are open 11am-3pm then close for an hour from 3-4pm. At 4pm they reopen til 7pm. While these…read moreare the official hours, they hardly ever open on time. Usually it's about 11:15/11:20am. It is hard to understand why because there are usually a bunch of attendants sitting around in the front at 11am but they never open the entrance gate til around 11:15/11:20am. Sometimes they have to wait for the police attendant to come. Once they do open, it is pretty fast to get inside. They look to make sure you have a lock. They require you to rinse off before going into the pool. On the deck, they don't allow you to wear anything besides a bathing suit or a white tee and flip flops. Not supposed to bring food, books or cell phone out.

It was an enjoyable evening. What was remarkably with the company is I was running late (damn you MTA!) and my friends spoke with organizer who actually gave a ten minute grace! I made it within that window and I was able to enjoy the play. I thanked the lady after but I'm so sorry I didn't get her name to publicly thank her here. Taking pics of course is frowned upon but when has that ever stopped me. Building was clean and looked well kept. 14th street Y's staff was very friendly and welcoming. I'll definitely consider attending other events here. The End.

A few days later, a staff member told me by phone that the matter was being investigated. She lied. My membership had been cut off. I asked why. No one told me. I'm an elderly white woman. The other person was half my age, large, and black. She said, "I'm going to get you," and could have done real harm to me. The only explanation I can see is racism.
