To call the Butcher's Arms a pub does not really do justice to this charming establishment. It's a…read moretiny room which is full of character and warmth; lovely old butchers blocks serve as high tables with seating for perhaps ten at a squeeze and standing room for a few more. The ever changing beer offering is chalked up on a blackboard and is served straight from the cask in a small room out back. It's not only the charm of this special little place which will put a smile on your face as the prices are also a pleasant surprise; most pints on our visit were around £2.50. I saw no evidence of anything other than beer for sale and didn't even think to enquire; this place is all about the ale. B was in the mood for something light so went for the Dark Star Hophead; this was also very popular with our other drinking companions who were ordering it in very fetching 2 and a 1/2 pint jugs. I kicked off with a pint of Larkins Traditional which was a nice light start to the evening and very drinkable at 3.4abv. By the time I had finished my pint we were deep in conversation with the owner Martyn and a couple of other beer enthusiasts from a nearby town who had made a special journey to The Butcher's Arms. I'm guessing that by the end of most evenings the conversation will have flowed far and wide and many wrongs will have been righted. Despite being keen to get down to Herne Bay for our supper we decided to stay for another pint; this is what I would call a "sticky" pub. Inevitably the conversation moved on to the Kentish brewing scene and a discussion of what we should look out for during our mini break. As we were about to leave one of our new chums remarked that she would not even clean her toilet with anything from Shepherd Neame (local industrial scale brewing company) - a remark which made me chuckle all weekend and nicely sums up the type of punter this pub attracts. The end of this little road to the coast serves…read moremasses of weekend day-trippers coming to fish off the sea defences, inspect the ancient ruined tower, walk and cycle along the Viking Way coastal path, as well as longer-term holidayers in the caravan park. Surely a prime spot for an ambitious landlord, somewhere to build a reputation, a destination along the lines of the Sportsman? A dozen close-packed picnic tables sit on decking at the rear, together with a gazebo For Smokers Only. There is a view of the car-park, and the immobile caravans of the holiday camp, but no trace of the sea. Food is the dullest pub food imaginable; baked potato with tuna and sweetcorn served with new potatoes in mayo, wet quiche Lorraine, Tesco Value style pizza ten minutes late because "one of the machines broke", and so forth. You would have to be very brave indeed, or singularly well refreshed, to try one of the gourmet dishes off the specials board inside: "braised duck leg with a black cherry & tamarind sauce served with rosti potato & veg of the day", anyone? Would be one star if it wasn't for the fact that it serves a decent pint (Greene King IPA, Shepherd Neame Masterbrew and "the whippet strikes back") and is in the perfect spot for a post walk or cycle stop. Don't touch the food though, stick to crisps, have a picnic up in the shelter of the Tower instead.

Last week, we spent the weekend in GB, in Kent and we discovered a lot of nice places. The one we visited on Sunday is the Reculver Country Park! After the visit, around noon, we decided to go to the only pub/restaurant close to the park; the King Ethelbert Inn. We had a drink and lunch here, on the terrasse as the weather permitted it! When it is more than 20° and you have that pretty sun in your face, everything is so easy and pleasant! Lots of English classics on the menu: cod (fish) and chips, Ploughman's lunch, burger,... I opted for a mixed fried plate with fresh products from the nearby sea! Not bad at all! Our friends opted for the classic Fish&Chips). My sister took a burger but it was not so great and my mom opted for the "Special Sunday Roasted" and its tasty roastbief, soufflé and steamed vegetables. Price per person: £8.95 and £5.95 for the "Sunday Roasted". Even if it was basic stuff and not "haute cuisine", I have to admit that we ate very well and for a reasonable price! In addition, the terrace is really nice and sheltered from the wind although we are near the sea! Moreover, I was expecting bad quality food as we are very close from a touristic venue but I was pleasantly surprised! Remark for tourists and people from abroad: as always in GB and in british pubs, no one will come and take your order, you have to go to the counter and ask what you want!

There is also a projector screen and large tv that are used for showing sports events. Posters are displayed around the pub that provide you with the details of what is being shown for the next few weeks. Atmosphere: On a match night Rodney's is always buzzing. The last time I went Arsenal were playing Porto and the pub was absolutely packed. We could hear the cheers as we walked up Mortimer street! Once inside the pub we found a table near to the projector screen and watched the match. Everyone was in a good mood and the drinks were flowing. Drinks: There is a large selection of lager, cider, alcopops and wine on offer at Rodneys sports bar. All are sold at reasonable prices and the bar runs along two walls of the pub so there is always an opportunity to get to the bar when the pub is busy. Sporting opportunities: As well as the sports viewing facilities I have already mentioned Rodneys has a pool table and a darts board. You can play darts for free (just ask for the darts at the bar) whilst the pool table costs £1 for a game. The pool table itself is in a little room separated from the main part of the pub. Around the pool table there are several places to sit and overhead lighting. As the pool table is in a separate room it is easier to play a game as there is normally no-one other than you in the pool room. However there are several places in the pool room where your cue will hit the wall. The pool table itself is also not that sturdy and will move if you knock into it. It also seems to be on a slight angle. These issues do not affect your ability to play a game significantly and often provide you with a large amount of humour as your ball rolls down the table on its own accord. Staff: Several bar staff work at Rodneys. All of them are polite and friendly and add to the brilliant atmosphere of the pub. Overall: Rodney's is the best place in Herne Bay to go and watch a game, play darts or shoot some pool. Or if your not feeling sporty you can have a quiet drink on one of the benches outside. Whatever you end up doing you can't go wrong in Rodney's. Herne Bay's sportiest pub.

The Monument has to be visited to be believed, the staff are unbelievably accomodating and efficient. They have SKY sports & ESPN, always show football, cricket, rugby and boxing...and whatever other sports may be on! Please go there and see how a proper local community pub should be run!
