Well, when you Need your drivers license, you just plain need it I give the state of Alabama props for enforcing masks, social distancing, and hand sanitizer. The process here is much better than it was in the past. I have many memories of very long wait times, but last time I went things had improved. The spaced out seating and ticket system is easier to follow and use. I used to dread having to come here, but it's not so bad now especially if you make an appointment. read more

Don't do your driver's test here. Employee clearly wanted to fail my child, who is an excellent driver. Must've had to meet his quota or something. Wouldn't give him a score, but said he failed for "two dangerous actions" one which he said was driving 30 in a 25 (while he was sitting on the other side of the car and could barely accurately read the speedometer gauge). The other "dangerous action" he said occured the minute he drove off with him - that there was a truck he pulled out in front of and that the truck almost hit him. I scheduled an appointment online and drove the 25 minutes to the office on the day of the appointment. When I got there the computers "crashed" so I was told to come back. Bad for me, but good for the employees since this was a Friday. The lady admitting people gave me a "Pass" to use when I came back. I would not need to schedule another appointment, just bring the Pass. The Pass has written across the top, "PASS TO RETURN TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE". I came back on Monday with my Pass, walked to the front of the line, showed the Pass to the guy with the nameplate "Jones". He proMptly called everyone already in line inside and sent me to the End of the Line (so much for the pass). The line moved fairly quickly and I was seated in the chair for Driver's License Renewals, only (no test). I was called after about 5 minutes and the lady issued me my temporary license in about 15 minutes. Not a bad experience. I started to give a Two-Star Rating, because of the jerk screening people at the door (Mr. Jones), but since the entire process took less than 45 minutes, I gave it Three-Stars. It took my wife three hours to get her license renewed about a month ago. read more

This was definitely the best DMV experience my wife and I have ever had. There was an employee who would stop you right before entering and ask what you were there for. Then, she'd check to make sure you had all of the appropriate papers for whatever license or renewal you needed. This was genius. It makes so much sense to verify you have the right papers before you even get in line. Once we were in line, we were seen promptly. The employees were nice and accommodating! We were probably in and out in 30 minutes! I will definitely come back to this location. read more

The location in Tuscaloosa is definitely your best bet if you or family members need to take permit test. I would strongly suggest going online to schedule an appointment. This will save you time. I made my sons appointment the day before we went and when we arrived, the lobby was full. I entered our appointment number and within 5 minutes we were called. The service was good. While sitting their was a staff member trying to prepare those waiting to make their transaction go smoothly and quick. Going forward this will be the only DMV I go to. read more

Another move, another new driver's license. The information available online was confusing, so I gathered up as much paperwork as I could think of in the hopes that the husband and I wouldn't be turned away for missing something. On arrival, we waded through some people to a touchscreen where we indicated what we were there for and were then issued a number. Though at first blush, I thought we would be stuck there all afternoon, we managed to be in and out in about an hour total. However, the way things are set up is just...weird. They have six desks up front, with chairs in front of them for customers to sit in, and the cameras set up behind them. I guess the chairs are there for a reason, because once I was called, it took a loooong time to get through everything! Instead of having you fill out paperwork, they just asked for information, making me wonder just how much they take your word for. The lady noticed that I had a large stack of paperwork and volunteered that if I had two proofs of address, she could make my license a STAR ID for no extra charge (some federal thing, I guess). That kind of weirded me out, since I'm used to having to prove my address just to get a license! We ultimately got what we needed, but I would be perfectly happy to never have to return here. Blech. Also, interesting side note, it is $40 for a license here that is good for just 4 years....whereas in Wisconsin, it is $28 for an 8 year license. Thanks, Alabama... read more

Arrived at 9:00 and we are still waiting three hours later. Good thing they closed all those other offices the only have two clerks working in this office. It's like Walmart on Friday afternoon. The experience lives up to the stereotype perfectly. read more

I actually drive from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa to use their DMV. The two Birmingham locations I visited were understaffed, slow, and rude. The Tuscaloosa office seems to be run efficiently and much better staffed. read more
