Came here for my birthday lunch, really wanting the scallops. Unfortunately they don't offer many of their entrees until 5 pm. I opted for the Crab Stew & a piece of fried fish. The Crab Stew was good but a huge bowl & AGAIN they don't offer in a smaller cup size. Too much! The fish looked AMAZING! That's where it ends... it was WAY under cooked. Still gooey & slimey inside. I searched the entire huge piece to find a bite that was cooked enough to eat. No luck. Couldn't eat any of it. When I told the waitress, she literally grabbed the plate, turned & walked away very miffed. I was SHOCKED at her reaction.... not even a sorry! The hubs had the Cuban & fries. The pork was very dry & many places charred to a totally crisp. Very little ham. He tried to add Thousand Island dressing to it but still only ate maybe half of it. The fries were ok. The best part of the lunch was watching the cats play down by the creek. The view outside is beautiful but looking at the dead bugs on the outside of the window ledges were gross. This place was really cute. Loved the decor. We all got the feeling that they were not expecting strangers but we did feel welcomed. We were seated right away and got our drinks immediately. My daughter also got a side salad that was fresh and big. The firecracker tacos were really good! The sauce was flavorful and just a touch spicy. The shrimp n grits were delicious. The Driftaway Cafe turned out to be exactly what my wife and I were looking for : a place with outstanding food, friendly service, and that 'friendly diner ' feel that makes you comfortable no matter where you're from. We were told that the fish dishes on the menu were always based on the fresh catch of the day , and that it would be Grouper the day we ate there. My wife ordered a grilled fish sandwich, I ordered the fish sandwich fried, and we were both very happy with the results. My daughter specifically requested that we revisit the Driftaway Cafe, as we had a great meal on a previous trip to the Savannah area. After visiting the nearby Pin Point Heritage Museum (well-worth the visit) we made our way back to this favorite of ours. We were originally told there was a fifteen minute wait, but it was actually less than five. My family ordered a wide range of items from the menu. I had the crab stew as an appetizer, followed by the fried oyster sandwich. My wife had a blackened fish sandwich. My son had the chicken tacos and my daughter had the fish and chips. When we were done there was nothing but empty plates. All of the food was hot, fresh, and delicious! My wife and I have been to the Driftwood several times. As always the food was lambing good. We started off with crab stew which we found to be delicious. My better half usually helps me with calamari (which was perfect) but she wanted to have the firecracker shrimp platter she had spotted on a table away. I am older than my wife plus (she is Chinese--eat YOUR food, people in China are starving.) She decided to tack on on Tuna Tartar. (Sorry folks but my food, at least meats, has to be cooked. It was Ovila Belgian-Style Abbey Quad: Ale Brewed with Plums after looking at the tap as we were leaving I was able to determine the name. She told me it was a stout, close. It is seasonal so if you get a chance try it. My Meal - A $13 grinder, was good but was not worth that much. Drift away cafe was spectacular! Southern hospitality at its finest! The hostess was extremely cordial. Courtney, our server, was so helpful and delightful. The food was delicious and I only wish I was staying more than a day to revisit. I don't say this almost ever but their salads were spectacular! All the dressings are homemade. The exterior suggests a run down hole in the wall, but inside you are welcomed to a fisherman's warf ambiance along a creek with local vegetation. Beer selection was great and the food outstanding! Used to enjoy the fair across the board, but as of recent it has precipitously fallen to a point that the food is; over cooked, burnt in some cases, portions lacking and generally just bad experiences all around. Manager as much admitted he's having kitchen problems, we showed him our food and he still charged us. The food and service here are simply stellar. We had 2 different appetizers, 5 entrees, and 2 desserts, and every last morsel was delicious. The portions were huge and great prices for the quality and quantity. Don't let the simple exterior fool you, this is truly a hidden gem. For appetizers we had octopus and tuna w/mango, our entrees were shrimp tacos, tuna tacos, gnocchi w/mushrooms, biscuits w/gravy, and grouper w/crabs, and a chocolate and key lime pie for dessert. Everything was cooked to perfection; one of my greatest pet peeves is over cooked fish and seafood, and it was done just right. Had a pretty unique dinner with some old friends at this strange little restaurant in Savannah, but about 20 minutes south/east of the touristy area, and seemingly in the country. This is a seafood restaurant that also has a lot of classic items like burgers and sandwiches. But my advice is to check out the list of specials because they are all good. As soon as I glanced at it, I was in love. Two words - Rattlesnake Chili. I have never eaten snake, but always wanted to, so this seemed as good a time as any. I was not disappointed. It was pretty delicious ... well, at least till I found a bone. I told my server about it, but not in a really serious way because it's just a bone, but she was pretty upset and actually comped my Caesar salad. Very nice of them! My friends enjoyed their entrees as well - one had salmon and the other a veggie fajita with the vegetables friend tempura style. First the good news. The food was really good, and the ability of a chef to make a blueberry reduction on salmon taste great is nothing short of an award-winning achievement. My wife also loved her Salad Nicois, and the potato salad is probably the best in Savannah. It made up for the fact that the kitchen was out of every special on the menu. Unfortunately, we experienced "drift away" service, as in our waitress' attention drifting away over and over again. My salad was forgotten. We asked for a couple of "to go" boxes, and sat there waiting...and waiting...and waiting for these to come. They were small and we asked for a another one, and again waited, and waited until we finally said "screw this" and shoved everything into the containers they gave us so we could get the heck out of there already. The seared tuna was done perfectly, the black bean and corn salsa served on top (or I got it on the side) was a nice accompaniment to the tuna! This little cafe was deliciously perfect! We grabbed the last table as this is popular for locals and travelers. We started with drinks out of a nice selection for those with a small or large budget. Wonderful and cozy shack located in a kinda sketchy spot attached to a pet salon, nonetheless the food was great. Extensive beer list and a good selection of wines. The menu are the right length and many choices sound excellent. I suggest the fried oysters and smoked pork belly, the jerk salmon salad, which the salmon and asparagus were cooked perfectly, and also the fried oyster sandwich which was huge and meaty. Food was tasty, service fast, prices affordable, I recommend getting different meals and sharing amongst selves. With alcohol, apps, and two meals, it's less than 30 bucks for some great seafood. So, what a great reception. We got to the door and had, at least, 5 people say hi to us. Robyn took the lead and made us feel right at home. My Mom and I stopped at Driftaway after a visit to the Wormsloe Plantation. The atmosphere was cool and inviting and we felt like "locals." We ordered fried green tomatoes and crab stew as appetizers and shared shrimp quesadillas and shrimp and grits. The portions were large, so we couldn't quite finish them. Tonight is my second night in a row. My fiance picked this restaurant and she picked a winner. The food at the Driftaway Cafe is amazing. I'm somewhat of a local and have passed this hidden gem but not experienced the food. On a whim, dropped in for late lunch. I was not expecting the food journey ahead. I had the Tuna Nibblers and Tuna Tartare. Both were awesome. The tuna was cooked to the perfect temperature and the flavors complimented the fish perfectly. My drink (rum runner) was perfect and hers was a cucumber margarita. The portions were enough to share for a couple and were fulfilling. I did not have room for an entree. On to the second night. Ordered the Tuna Nibblers again and tried the firecracker shrimp. Dude, the firecracker sauce is out of this world. The shrimp was served over a bed of lettuce and the sauce was perfect for an impromptu salad. The Tuna was as I remembered from the previous night but I had to try them in the Hawaiin sauce (yesterday was jerk seasoning). I had the catch of the day which happened to be Grouper (my favorite fish selection). The portion was large enough to share and seasoned perfectly. The crab topping was great and the parmesan topping was not over powering. In closing, I highly recommend the driftaway cafe. Get there early because parking is tight and depending on the performing artist, the place can be packed. read more
