Go TIM Go! As a recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering at MIT and living in dorm room for 4 years, I have accumulated a collection of electronic equipments. I guess I could have tossed them out, though my environmentalist girlfriend would kill me for that. I like to give it away, but some of those items like the digital oscilloscope and teknetics T2 detector still have some value in them. My friends tell me to sell it. But where? How? I checked some local newspapers classified section and wonder what category I could put all my collectables under. And I don't want to pay a lot for the service. I enquired with one of those newspapers and they quoted me that it'll be $10 for a week and I get 10 words review to sell my stuff. That will not work. First I can't afford $10 a week multiply by 100 or so items. Do the math; it doesn't make sense to tackle that route. And secondly, what are the chances I can get some decent bucks for the teknetics T2 from citizens in Cambridge, MA? I need a wider audience. I need a classified ad that can and will reach the whole world. I need an online classified site to do all this for me. There are a lot of classified sites out there and I'm not going to list them all as time is of value. Here are my top 5 online classified websites that I had success on if any of you want to sell your junk (or other's treasure) through the internet. Keywords I search for includes "free advertising usa", "classified usa", "online classified", "advertising usa".
My Top 5:
5. www.ebay.com - They are big. Big doesn't always mean it's the best place to sell. Plus the registration process is too complicated. My mom always questions me about the site.
Pros:
- A very large audience based
Cons:
- Not a classified site, but an auction site.
- My ads got drowned in the millions and millions of other postings and ads.
4. www.backpage.com
Pros:
- Includes most countries of interests.
Cons:
- Not entirely free. Can get costly if multiple items are posted and for a long durations.
- Hard to post an ad. Have to find my city amongst other cities of different countries listed all together. Need a new design to the website.
- Hard to navigate around the website
3. www.Kijiji.com - owned by ebay.com as I later found out.
Pros
- Mainly Canadian users
Cons:
- Mainly Canadians who knows about the site. Would be good if you want to sell someone a hockey stick or snowshoes.
2. www.craigslist.com
Pros:
- Wider audience
Cons:
- Simple site. Maybe too simple as it looks like reading a newspaper ads
- Hard to find and hard to search.
- To register, I have to provide a cell phone number so they can send me an authentication key. No, no, and no. I have a cell phone, but other than my family friends having my number. I like to keep it that way.
AND #1 on my list..............
1. www.dreamclassified.com - why did I list them as number one? Well, of the 97 items I listed on there, I sold 56 of them. How's that for amazing. I think much of the success is because they don't have a huge database and if people don't renew their ads, they get deleted, thus making way for new ads that can take advantage of the situations.
Pros:
- Very easy to use and post ads
- Registration is simple. A 2 y/o old can do it.
- Their emailing system is fantastic. I don't have to create a new email on google or hotmail to post my ads. When someone has a question, I get an email from dreamclassified and by clicking on that link opens up a window detailing the questions. Their system doesn't reveal the sender email address and doesn't display mine. Secure and private for buyers and sellers.
- If you click the GO button, it lists every ads from around the world that was posted.
- No advertising or pop-ups to flash in your face while browsing
Cons:
- Would be nice to have other countries to choose from like China, Japan, Russia, France, etc... read more
