Louis Sullivan was the father of the modern skyscraper, being one of the very first architects to embrace steel framing and to design buildings that took advantage of that framing technique. Some of the most beautiful buildings in Chicago came from the fertile mind of Louis Sullivan. In the twilight of his career, Sullivan designed several small office buildings and a department store in Clinton, Iowa. His farewell gift to architecture was comprised of eight bank buildings commissioned from around the Midwest. He dubbed the designs "Jewel Boxes" for their simple but strong external appearance, with the security shown for the gems locked firmly inside. This gem is the pride of Grinnell, and rightfully so. If you're in the area, stop in and visit. The center is open weekdays and usually on weekends. The staff is friendly and wants you to enjoy your visit to Poweshiek County. By the way, enjoy the building - it's worth the effort to see it!

Went to a wedding reception here tonight. I was only a guest so I can only speak on the experience…read moreof my visit and not on the quality of booking and renting the place. It's located centrally in town and is a newer modern building. There is ample parking available. The entry way was nice and bright. They had the bar set up here. The restrooms are large and bright. Several stalls in the womens restroom. The main room was large but intimate. It wasn't super fancy but works for a low budget wedding, convention, family reunion or another event for up to 150 people. There was a dance floor area and a kitchen on the opposite side. It looked like the main room could be broken up into 3 smaller rooms. The main part of the room with the exception of the dance floor was carpeted. The carpet was worn in the entry ways but clean. They supplied several round tables and tablecloths. The reception I was at had about 75 people and there was room for plenty more. For this size of town this was a nice place to have available for events.

They weigh your vehicle before and after you drive in /out. I feel bad that everything is just dumped and covered with dirt here, but it is a dump. We need somewhere to drop our junk. Maybe one day, in the future, the dump will get uncovered and be turned into valuable fuel, or something. That would be cool.
