Compared to the other cities, Frankfurt's market was on the larger end of the scale and extends for several blocks beginning near the river and winding its way up through the city in no real discernible pattern. Unlike other markets, it also has much more of a focus on food and drink with a broad variety of items beyond just the traditional foods of the region as was characteristic of other markets. Because of its meandering layout, it's a bit more difficult to be sure you've seen it all. Like all the markets, the centerpiece is a giant lighted Christmas tree (white lights only) and this market is set amidst a scenic square of reconstructed half-timbered houses making for a beautiful backdrop. Not my favorite market despite its scenic nature and for me not a destination I would seek out on a Christmas market vacation, but worth a visit if you happen to be in town during Christmas.

The Christmas market is quite expansive, going on for several city blocks. It would be difficult to not feel holiday cheer when walking along the stalls. I know the festival is focused on Christmas, but people of all religions would enjoy the this event. There are carousel rides for the kids, fun music, and the best of all, lots of food and beverages! Carnivores have a wide variety of choices, with huge grills full of sausages. I heard from several meat-eaters that the food is delicious. They have offerings for those of us who do not eat meat. Of course, lots and lots of french fries smothered in mayo, as well as sweet and savory crepes. The cheese crepes are so good, served on a big wafer cookie instead of a plate (smart idea.) The best part, though, is by far the yummy varieties of beverages. Since it super cold in the winter, the hot Gluhwein is a real winner. Mulled wine, hot enough to warm you up but not boiling to where the alcohol content is diminished. The mix of Apfelwein and Gluhwein, served with a slice of orange, is also tasty. There are also many stalls with bottled alcohol for sale. Some of the best I tried were varieties of alcohol made with honey. Rum, whiskey, even grappa! The employee gave out samples and it was easy to spend a lot of money there! Early evening is the best time to visit if you hate large crowds. Make sure you secure your valuables. There are many pick-pocketers, so men need to keep wallets in front pockets and women need to wear purses that cross their bodies. Our friends experienced some Syrian refugees literally sliding their hands in their back pockets. Just be aware of your surroundings and you will have a great time!

Christmas markets rock... they really do, but I'm claustrophobic and hate being in enclosed and crowded spaces, so basically a Christmas market is hell on earth for me. This market brought the joy back into my life. I went here in a group of five people and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Not nearly as touristy or crowded as the others, I found a seat rather quick on a bench and was able to enjoy my beer in a festive environment. I drank a Carolus doppelbock and sat with friends for hours and highly suggest this market to anyone who is not looking to get hit with cameras from tourists or mediocre food and drink.

A yearly extravaganza ending in a massive firework show. Don't miss the dragon boat racing and, of course, plenty to eat and drink, this is, after all, in Germany. For a non-mainstream music entertainment I always go to the RadioX stage (below the Holbein foot bridge), always something new and interesting to hear.

Each year the various districts of Frankfurt all organise local festivals and this one at the…read moreinfamous Bahnhofsviertel is definately one of my favourites, second only to the cozy little Brücken/Wall-Festival. The Bahnhofsviertelnacht takes place on the third Thursday in August every year and attracts a colorful crowd. Live music in the streets; guided tours through 5-Star-Hotels, brothels (usually lady's only, sorry guys!) or the Masonic Lodge; special deals for bars and discos; an enormous variety of foods served by the local restaurants make that night quite an experience! Come early, grab a programme, wear comfy shoes (you will have to queue and wait eventuelly but it'll be worth it!). The Countdown is August 2013 and COUNTING!
