So I have 2 kids, both under the age of 4 making them pretty damn young. So everyday when I carry around my daughter, my older son wants me to carry him too. Feeding them with my other free arm... is quite an accomplishment. Doing things, picking things up from the floor whilst carrying my 11kg daughter is a great exercise in squatting. Lunging. Doing push-ups... okay not push-ups but it feels like a full body workout. Enter Dr Massage (chinese massage). They are awesome! You get in there without an appointment and those tiny little chinese girls and boys hammer whatever body part you want to death. They are surprisingly strong and they use their elbows... and how do I say this politely... really get in there! You can ask them to use less pressure of course, but when your back, shoulders and neck lock up from carrying kids around doing things in general, you want them to hammer those knots out. My massage therapist did exactly that, I got the $20 20 minute neck and shoulders massage and it was a bit painful I must admit, but she got that sucker out. I am knot free until next time and guess what? I flashed my MBF card and only had to pay $2. This is by far the bargain of the century, they offer rebates to about a million other healthcare providers too, alway a treat. As an added bonus, you get a frequent visitor card and a discount after your 4th treatment. I can't fault them, they don't speak really good english, but hey it's probably good because when you're trying to relax, you really don't want the therapist chatting up a storm... this is a great little place. I know it's just the beginning of the year, but already I feel as though I'm riddled with knots. Ah.... help! I went to check with my usual massage place in Mt Om, only to find out they're fully booked for the times I'm available, so it was a no go. I had no plans of trying another massage clinic in Mt Om because I assumed no one in the area would match up with my favourite place here. As I continued trudging with my shopping bags, I turned and looked up and saw a bright sign, 'Dr Massage'. That was it. I had to enquire! The lovely lady at the counter was very friendly. She chatted to me briefly about their service, but she didn't need to convince me any further, I had already decided yes. I gave them a wave of my MBF card and it knocked $25 off my $65 massage. Brilliant! Whole body massage for only $40. You can't complain! I was shown a chart of different scented massage oils and asked which I'd prefer. I went with the popular aromatic lavender. I requested a female masseuse, being a whole body massage and all, I didn't want to feel uncomfortable one bit. And they kindly obliged and introduced me to Helen my massage therapist. She was wonderful. Strong, consistent and with great technique. I literally feel asleep for parts of it. It was so relaxing and she applied the perfect amount of pressure. After the massage is done, they wipe off the oil with a hot towel. That was also a very relaxing experience. The only thing that I wasn't too fond of here is the massage space being so tiny. I'm sure the massage therapists bump into each as the move about the area massaging their clients. It's such a tight squeeze, I feared toppling over while undressing and no, there are no walls to lean on should that happen... You'd just fall through the curtains in full view of the mall to see. Thank goodness, that didn't happen. However, once your eyes are closed, you completely forget this and the background noise fades... And you enter a complete euphoric state. $60 for a full body massage, $70 with 'special oil' - they used BABY OIL and thought I was oblivious to it. Dishonest practice. 20 mins in and after 3 requests for the 'masseuse' to perform a stronger, deep tissue massage as requested, I left. On the way out I asked if the masseuse had any qualifications - "no qualifications, all staff are trained in house." These kind of people love to pretend they don't know what's going on because of some cultural/language barrier. Don't buy into it, go to someone with a diploma in massage or simply research SMFR (self myofascial release). read more
