I'm not a fan of horse drawn carriage rides so I'll admit it tugs at my heart a bit to see the horses foaming at the mouth on a hot and humid day while "entertaining" humans who could easily walk to their destination. Judgement aside, this area is a nice place for tourists to explore, shop and eat. Local artists display their wares around the square and there are plenty of tasty restaurants all around.

I came straight from work, easily found a parking spot and was greeted by a couple of Lafayette's finest manning the door. They directed me to the third floor where I was greeted and handed a voters card, sticker and viola! Done. From start to finish this process MAYBE took ten minutes. Easy peasy. Don't forget to vote on 11/12 if you haven't already!

This one was particularly interesting as I had absolutely no idea how the artwork connected to the title. Which is generally the way it works for me and my art appreciation. Maybe you'll understand. The caption (on the sidewalk) reads, "Lonnie Holley has devoted his adult life to the practice of improvisational creativity across many media, from visual art, to music and - most recently - film. His film, "I Snuck Off the Slave Ship," premiered at 2019 Sundance Film Festival. His 2018 album, "MITH", was critically acclaimed, making lists of the top 10 records of the year in the New Yorker and Newsweeek. Paste magazine has named Holley (along with cultural icons such as Yoko Ono, David Byrne, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Laurie Anderson) as one of the 10 most important artists who crossover between the visual arts and music." The artwork is titled "Headed to the Land We Were Promised (Glory)" and was completed in 2019. It also says Birmingham, Alabama and the material is carbon steel. Nicely there is a short fence on the Napoleon side of the park with the playground, but NOT on the Magazine side so definitely keep an eye on runaway kids. These parks are bit better maintained than Samuel Square and don't seem to be as full of dogpoop. So that's nice. Now that the Napoleon construction is almost completed perhaps they will be more usable and less dusty.

The green spaces are open. Next to a library branch there's a full b-ball court often abuzz with pick-up games which also happens to be adjacent to a police precinct no less. Additionally just across the street is Ms Mae's if you get thirsty for adult beverages. It can be challenging to park given the enormity of things nearby. Also, almost ALL the Uptown parades roll right by here. I would totally use this park much more if I lived closer.

At all times, even if it's the middle of summer and there hasn't been rain for a week, there are three large, green, smelly mud pits that are never filled or attended to by staff. These holes with standing water are a health hazard (bacteria, mosquitoes and such) but also a nuisance for dog owners to keep their dogs out of. There is no shade and only a few patches of grass. In addition, the wash facilities for the dogs are kept turned off. There are hoses there but no way for us to use them. I've seen many patrons now brining their own "keys" (purchased from the hardware store) to turn the hose on. Some dog owners will routinely use the adjoining baseball field for their dogs, as it's well maintained with cut grass and no standing water puddles. It's a shame that the neighborhood had to wait so long for a park that is so terribly maintained. There are no other off-leash parks anywhere close which encourages dog owners to use "illegal" spaces for their pets such as open parks and baseball fields. I've been hassled by police for doing this, even with a fixed, registered and well behaved dog. The efforts that the city puts into bullying/ticketing dog owners who use those illegal spaces is useless if they fail to provide decent and legal off-leash parks for our use.

Thankfully the new station will be finished by this time next year and it's in a better location because they have more space, it's new, AND I've heard it will be easier to park. The officers have always been polite, courteous, and helpful when I've called for help, and I really appreciate it. Funny story, the zipper on my wallet/clutch/purse thing once got stuck in the inside of my jeans back pocket, and this lovely lady officer spent a good 10 minutes with me trying to help me clip it our where the fabric was stuck so that she didn't ruin my jeans. Normally a visit to such a building is the result of something very negative. The worst being that you are a victim of a crime and hopefully only a property crime. Or that you may be in the process of an arrest and that is never nice whether for a minor offense or for a felony. And then again you may be dropping off goodies for the guys and gals in Blue during Carnival Season. Unfortunately my visit was because I am a crime victim. A thief absconded with all the beautiful Mardi Gras decorations we placed on our home. I was dropping off the video of this low life heathen. The thief just happens to be female and up in age. And I must say that the response and follow up to the two incidents of theft were handled professionally and in a caring manner. Not a major crime and there is so much they have to be concerned about I was pleased with my three contacts with the members of the NOPD. And the visit to 4317 as the Station is called brought back memories from a time I was younger, slimmer, hairier, and a proud member of the NOPD. Probably a time where many YELP participants were not even born. The building is renovated and there are no longer stables in the back. The cells have been converted and so much is different. Time marches on. The odd thing about the Second District Station today, if you don't know, is that it is now located in the newly formed Sixth District.
