I had an office visit with Dr. Zavaro yesterday. As usual Dr. Zavaro was very gracious, considerate, and caring about my comfort and dental health. I told him that I wrote a review about his practice on Yelp, and wanted him to take a look at it. I was very persistent in my request. Of course, Dr. Zavaro being so humble and courteous, he tried to read the review. I was very surprised and almost mortified when I could not find my review. I was truly embarrassed and humiliated. I promised Dr. Zavaro that I would post my review once again for him to read it. Here it is: Last week I had a crown installed by Dr. Zavaro. I have to admit when I broke my tooth I was very nervous when I went to Dr. Zavaro's office. Although I had many regular visits before to Dr. Zavaro's office, but this time I was dreading to have a serious work and to have to spend a lot of time at the Dentist. Dr. Zavaro took me in quickly and made me feel very comfortable. He sat down and explained to me all my options in great details and he was extremely receptive to my questions. He was very professional in his explanations but always made me feel that I was in charge of any decision. When the decision was made, he completed all his work in one session and told me he would call me when the crown is ready. Last Friday I had to visit his office to get the crown installed. I deliberately took the last appointment at 5:30 PM because I had to drive from Upstate New York where I work to his office in Boston. Although I left on good time to make it to the appointment but I was running late because of Friday traffic. I called his office to let them know that I could be 30 minutes late to the appointment and I proposed to the receptionist to reschedule the appointment. She immediately replied that Dr. Zavaro does not mind to wait for me, and she told me to drive carefully and not to rush. Finally I made it to his office about 45 minutes late. Needless to say, I was very apologetic, but he was very receptive and understanding. He told me there was no need for apology. He took his time and carefully installed the crown. He kept talking to me and asking me how I feel about the crown and if I had any slight discomfort; until he was sure that I was OK. Dr. Zavaro is genuine, highly professional, and very caring to his patients. He did waste 45 minutes of his time waiting for me last Friday evening to show up at his office. I felt that I can spend few minutes on the computer to let everybody know how wonderful Dr. Zavaro is. read more

My review was filtered, I am hoping that posting it again will fix this issue. I came to Dr. Zavaro a few years ago after having had some bad dental treatment done at another office. Dr. Zavaro did a bone graft and an implant for me. He also helped me find an excellent orthodontist (I was previously being seen by someone but was very unhappy with the treatment). The implant that he did for me was one of my upper front teeth. He informed me that this is one of the most difficult places to have an implant done- there is limited bone to hold the implant and the final restoration has to be aesthetically pleasing. I am usually very nervous with dental treatment, but Dr. Zavaro and his assistant were extremely patient with me. Dr. Zavaro never did any procedure without fully explaining everything and answering all my questions. When it was time to have the final tooth cemented, Dr. Zavaro was extra careful to help me choose the correct shade for the tooth. With a front tooth, this can be VERY difficult. Before cementing, he made sure I was 100% comfortable with it. He was very willing to do anything differently if I asked. Since having the implant completed, I cannot count how many compliments I have gotten on my smile. I would STRONGLY recommend choosing to see Dr. Zavaro if you are looking for a dentist. I would not trust any other dentist with my care. read more

Dr. Zavaro, did a root canal for me a few years ago along with a crown and post(s). (I will get to why I say "post(s)"). A year or two later, I have pain and swelling above the tooth. I had switched dentists by then and my new dentist checked it to discover that one of the canals was not properly cleaned out which led to an acute infection. It also looks like the root canal was very poorly done with multiple posts jammed in to the tooth area due to which the procedure cannot be reversed and redone. The only option is an apisectomy which is essentially cleaning the canal and infection by cutting in from the gum to the canal (quite painful and time consuming). I had to get this procedure done 2-3 times for it to be effective. It cost more money, time and discomfort. I considered suing Dr. Zavaro for malpractice but did not as such cases are hard to pursue but I strongly recommend NOT using him as your dentist. He is only qualified to be a basic dentist and not qualified to do root canals (should be done by an endodontist) or any other procedure (implants?! per his website) that is more specialized in nature. He should have made a referral but his goal is to just maximize revenue per patient. Beware and stay away! read more

I have been to over 20 dentists over the course of my life. Unequivocally, Dr. Zavaro is the best. Why? Start with the fact that, unlike some dentists, he will never, ever perform a procedure unless it is absolutely necessary. When a procedure does need to be performed he does an amazing job. I've needed fillings due to deep grooves in my back teeth (a genetic trait). He filled them and polished them perfectly over a long, two-day operation. Absolutely no complaints. When you go to a dentist the hygienist usually cleans your teeth, right? Not at Downtown Dental. Dr. Zavaro handles teeth cleaning himself, in order to actually get all of the build-up of junk out of your teeth that you can't get to when you brush/floss. Hygienists don't have the skill to do a good job! Dr. Zavaro handles this task by himself; all of the big dental chains hire hygienists for it. Finally, his office is brand new, with the latest technology in dental equipment, and is spotlessly clean. Other dentists are delaying replacing equipment in this economy; Dr. Zavaro has a state-of-the-art office. Overall, the best dental experience I have ever had. read more

I came to this dentist because he is one of the few in my work area that takes my insurance (Delta Dental) and because he was recommended by a co-worker. I could not be happier! First of all, I had not been to a dentist in years and rather than trying to milk me out of my money (or torture me with dental instruments) by doing all procedures at once, he sat down and created a plan for me. Dr. Zavaro made sure to space the procedures in a way that would ensure my medical insurance would cover the bulk of it. And it did. My oral health is at a maximum and I only had to pay the minimum for each procedure as set by my insurance. In addition, he did some "minor fixings" free of charge just because he was "already there." Moreover, both him and his assistant are extremely nice, courteous and attentive to the patient's schedules. I have never had to wait to be seen and even though I have cancelled last minute (or failed to show up) they always treat me in a very courteous manner and give me an appointment quickly. I am really fond of this office and their professionals, they almost make it a pleasure to go to the dentist. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Zavaro since his previous location on Temple Place (over 8 yrs or so). I am very much pleased with his service and professionalism. Like many others, I have a phobia of dentist visits and certain procedures. Since day one, Dr. Zavaro made me feel at ease with his sensitivity to my fears, patience and thorough explanation of procedures and its necessity. He is not only concerned about my well-being in his office at the time of visit; but also about my future implications on my oral hygiene. I've had many cleanings (done by him and not a hygienist ... which says alot!), porcelain fillings, bonding, deep scaling and was referred to a great orthodontist by him. Now, not only does he provide my routine oral hygiene care but advises me and works closely with my orthodontist to make sure that I am satisfied, content and at ease with my braces. In addition, his office is exceptionally clean, staff courteous at all times, and accessibility to him is easy. I was so pleased with his services, that I went as far to recommend my boss to him! Dr. Zavaro is the best dentist I have ever gone to. I have super sensitive teeth and my previous dentist would just tell me to bear it, every filling hurt and even a cleaning was excruciating. Dr. Zavaro has given me pain-free fillings and root canals, has done beautiful crown work, is very sensitive to not cause me pain during cleanings and has a wonderful demeanor. He is always punctual and you never have to wait for him when going to an appointment during lunch hour. High tech office. He really empowers his patients to make their own decisions and looks out for your best interest - he will not suggest unnecessary procedures and he is sensitive to the high cost of dental work. It is important to him that he educate his patients on why is making certain recommendations, shows you your x-rays and explains what you are looking out. My previous dentist messed up my mouth but Dr. Zavaro is extremely professional, courteous, and I truly trust his opinion and am always impressed by his care. I have referred him to friends and they have been just as happy with him. Highly highly recommended! read more

If I could give 6 stars, I gladly would. I rarely write reviews, but I feel compelled to let others know that Dr. Zavaro and staff are AWESOME! I switched to him after getting a job nearby. I wasn't very good about taking care of my teeth for a number of years and hadn't had a regular dentist since I graduated college. Over the course of the 6 or 7 years I've been a patient, my teeth and smile are in the best shape they've ever been in. Dental work (especially the kind I needed) is expensive...no doubt about it. I shopped around and even considered going abroad. What I found was that his rates are VERY good and the value is second to none. The icing on the cake is that he and his staff are so friendly and warm. I always have a few good laughs when I go there and I dare say that I almost look forward to going there. How's that for an oxymoron? In all seriousness, if you're looking for an awesome dentist and don't want to sacrifice your first born, try him out. read more

Dr. Zavaro has been my dentist for the past 2 years now, and every experience I've had with him has been wonderful. I have many persisting dental issues that he has taken care of for me, most notably a root canal and a crown. Any questions I had have been answered by either him or a member of his friendly staff. Any time I've told him I felt pain while he was drilling he stopped to give me more novocaine. Outwardly, Dr. Z might seem cold and harsh, but that's just him focusing on his work. He's a nice, kind man who truly cares about the well being of his patients. I travel from my current location in Ohio, just to have dental work done by him. I would, and have recommended his services to my family and friends because of the wonderful job he has done on my teeth. :) read more

Dr. Zavaro was kind enough to fit me into his busy schedule for a fractured molar and had to do an emergency extraction. He was very reassuring and compassionate, explained everything he did clearly, and kept me completely pain free. I was so surprised that he got me so numb for such a daunting procedure. The recovery went well and he is now doing the implant procedures to replace the molar. He always makes sure I understand how he will proceed, answers my questions, and keeps me as free from pain as humanly possible. His staff are all very friendly and helpful, and his office and waiting room are very clean and beautifully decorated. I've been going to Dr. Zavara for the past 7 years. Even when I moved out of Boston, I still kept Dr. Zavara as my dentist because he provides top quality care. My teeth have never been in better shape. In fact my teeth will last longer because of his proactive approach to my teeths' health. He answers all my questions in detail so I can understand what is happening to my teeth and what work I "must" have done and "should" have done so I can make informed decisions. I appreciate the honesty! The other reviewer (who is holding a machine gun in his picture!) I can only guess suffered gum bleeding because he had a deep cleaning and/or neglected the daily care of his teeth. read more

This is a great dental office. Very neat and very good services. The staff is awesome and Dr. Zavaro, one of the main Dr.'s in the office, is very experienced and provides quality services. They have state of the art equipment and a very comfortable environment. I would highly recommend this office to anyone. I am a long time customer (over 10 years) and I know many of my friends and co-workers go there and have a great experience. I completely disagree with the bad review posted on here. I have been going to Dr. Zavaro's for 2 years. My initial impression was "Wow, the office is spotless. I am a bit of a clean freak when it comes to doctors and dentists and his office definitely passed. His assistant is super sweet and on point. He is definitely a perfectionist. I have gotten a root canal and a crown among other things. The technology he used to make the crown on the spot was incredible. And then he put on the final touches by hand- I said he is like a tooth artist. When I asked for a mirror I could not tell which tooth had been worked on. He is friendly, funny and caring. I have been a patient of Dr. Zavaro for well over 15 yrs, starting at his Temple Pl office..now living in Needham I still feel that my best interests are served with Elias..he has done excellent work handling all of my dental issues (I've run the gamut)with great care, does cleanings personally, and is simply a very good and caring person. I used his recommendation for orthodontia, and his referral (Dr. Blau in Cambridge) was the best. I've been Dr. Zavaro's patient for 15+ years which obviously means I've had great care. He has always been very clear about what treatment I needed; explained what he was doing; checked up on me as needed after a procedure and has helped me maintain healthy teeth & gums! He always has state of the art equipment. A root canal required only one visit. He took xrays & designed & crafted the crown using an on-site machine. There was no need for a temporay cap while I waited for the permanent one. I've recommended Downtown Dental to friends & colleagues & will continue to do so. read more

This dentist restored my faith in dentists. After a terrible experience (see my review of my West Roxbury, MA dentist), I was desperate just to get some straight answers. The office is clean and comfortable, and the staff and hygenist were very friendly and welcoming. The doctor himself is, well, not especially gentle. But my teeth looked fantastic after my cleaning, and he obviously knew what he as talking about (as opposed to my previous dentist). I wouldn't trust my teeth to anyone else. read more

Very pleasant, professional and personable service. I was 20 minutes late today but they were able to squeeze me in and were very nice. The teeth cleaning is always gentle, as I have sensitive teeth. They do a thorough job and get out all of my minor coffee stains (my teeth feel and look squeaky clean after).
