There is so much going on downtown! Many days we like to go sit by the river and watch the sunset over the river! You can visit the U.S.S KIDD, the state capital and the old state capital. Take a walk on the downtown streets to visit some of the bars and restaurants. Or go to one of the parades and festivals that go on. During December you can walk the streets under all the Christmas lights and see the tree on Main Street. The river center offers many different concerts, shows and other events. You can even ice skate in the winter. The arts and science museum is good as well as the planetarium. Downtown also has a brand new library. If you are into gambling, they have the two river boats to play on. There also multiple hotels and apartments downtown! So make a day of it and enjoy all it has to offer!

Here's a bit of advice get yourself downtown! Go as often as you can. Seriously, downtown Baton Rouge is vibrant and bustling and beautiful. There are so many things to do as a family, if your single, if you are a cultured human being, if you're a tourist, and trust me there's numerous things going on all the time that still draw in and surprise the locals. So you like museums? Do you like science? Great, check out LASM. You like history? Then check out the USS Kid. Check out the port and the barges and steamboats operating in full swing. Don't forget to check out the events going on at The SHAW Center and concerts, recitals, and symphonies at The River Center. You like to eat don't you? There's a wide variety of restaurants whether you're craving seafood, Cajun food, Mexican food, Greek food, pizza, any kind of food...you get my drift, eh? If you're into nightlife festivities Downtown B.R. has it going on. There are many clubs/bars/pubs in a localized central area for whatever your individual taste may be. Like Blues? They have a blues room. Like Cajun music, they got that, too. Enjoy more modern tunes? Wonderful, they got places for you, too. See, something for everybody. Downtown Baton Rouge is always kept nice and clean and police patrol the area and it is pretty safe to take the whole family out. They are always sponsoring events such as Krewe of Mutts dog parades, color run, The Red Stick Farmers Market, Live after 5, and The Blues Festival just to name a few. They have a nice library, nice historic hotels, beautiful views of the Mississippi bridge and riverfront. The North Blvd. Town Square always has music playing and is the Central Park grounds for many events. Repentance park is right around the corner and they also have events going on. Check out neighboring Spanish Town and their obscene amount of pink flamingos. You can see some of the most historical houses, zany people, and even stop in the tiny but popular Spanish Town Market. Feeling athletic or you just want to exercise? Like talking your dog out for a walk? Of course you do because this is Baton Rouge and everyone loves and has at least one pampered pooch. So take Fido, and the baby in the baby stroller for a run on the levee which has beautiful views and a running trail. Oh, and please note, parking is atrocious. Make sure you use the parking garage, or have some change to put in the meters, that is if you can find a parking spot. And on events there is almost always paid parking lots, sigh. All in all you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't go explore Downtown Baton Rouge. So take your family out their this weekend, or treat yourself tonight. You will enjoy yourself.

There are three lanes in each direction and the bridge is always crowded with all sorts of vehicles. Seemingly whatever has wheels and a motor travels across this bridge. Lol! While it is not a pretty bridge (in my opinion), it is robust because it handles over 100,000 vehicles daily. I really should give it five stars because it does its job.

There is one thing breathtaking about this bridge: You can see the vastness of Ol' Man River and…read moreknow that it all started as a small offshoot from a lake in Minnesota. This is a river that has been written about countless times and intertwined into so many classic pieces of literature. That, my friends, is something to see. But let's get back to the actual bridge. This bridge is very forgettable, other than the fact that you feel like you're ascending into the sky on the way up and descending from the same location on the way down. It's treacherous during a rainstorm, which often hits this part of the Gulf Coast during summer hours. Access onto and off the bridge can also, at times, be a complete nightmare. This is not the Golden Gate Bridge. Nor the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. Nor is it the 59th Street Bridge or the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Those are bridges that are iconic: you remember them for their engineering, structure and beauty -- as I've been on each of them and they are committed to my memory. The Mississippi River Bridge is functional: it gets you from one side to the other and sometimes it doesn't even do a good job of that. But I do not recollect it for any of the attributes that make a bridge a remarkable structure. So that, amongst other things, make this bridge just a solid OK, which is 3 stars.

You can also peek into both the state legislature rooms which are amazingly detailed and decorated. Don't forget to find the back hallway on the ground level where Huey Long was shot. Its greens are a bit underwhelming but as you get closer to the building you do get a sense of its historic significance. Once you're in and past security you're greeted with an art deco style interior that feels old and outdated but in a bit of a charming way. Going on a Friday before a long weekend meant the place was a ghost town but that was nice as we felt we had the whole place to ourselves to explore. There wasn't much going on when we went but they do have an amazing observation deck that allows for beautiful views of the Baton Rouge area (for free!). You do have to take two elevators to reach the top but it's well worth it. Keeping with the theme both elevators are small and old fashioned which kind of adds to the charm. There's also a gift shop at the top where we bought some magnets from for a reasonable price. This was a fun pit stop we hit along the way to New Orleans which is how we would view this place as a whole. There's nothing here that would make you go out of your way for it, especially with how difficult parking can be around there (we walked 10 minutes from our spot). However, if you're on your way to NOLA or are very interested in Louisiana's state history, then this place would definitely be for you.
