Right smack dab in the heart of Sittard's city center lies a small restaurant called Down Under, on the outside a seemingly quaint looking restaurant which caught my eye by the bright yellow sign they use to show off their name.
After browsing through the menu, the Devil's Heat burger caught my eye since with a name like that, it would probably sate my need for spice.
Having sat down in a firm but comfy chair, the service from the waitress was excellent. Drinks were put down within minutes of ordering them and before I knew it, my order for the burger was already put in and the wait had begun.
The presentation of the burger was good, not overly dressed to make it look like it was anything more than a properly cooked burger.
This is where my regret began. The heat from the burger was stated to be from a sauce made of Madame Jeannette peppers, having had this pepper before, I didn't expect the explosion of heat that went off in my mouth as soon as I bit into it.
I can safely say that this was definitely not a sauce with Madame Jeannette peppers as its base, the heat and lingering taste in my mouth tasted strangely familiar to the time I experimented with the Ghost chili pepper.
Luckily, the waitress sensed my need for milk, evident by my groans and desperate pleas for milk and subsequently supplied me with copious amounts of the lifesaving dairy product.
Aside from the heat, the burger was excellent, cooked to perfection and slightly red in the center, just as I asked it to be prepared. The side dishes were also quite tasty and abundant in their servings.
All in all, I can say that I enjoyed my time at Down Under. The waitress and I had a few laughs about my cries of pain about the burger which made the situation a bit more bearable for me. I'll definitely return to restaurant when I'm in Sittard next time but I think I'll pass up on the Devil's Heat this time.
Congratulations to the chef, good sir, you have bested me! read more
