Warning - this is long, but we hope it's helpful information since we couldn't find much information before our stay! We stayed at the Double R Ranch in Benson, Arizona in early October 2024. I must admit that we highly underestimated the Ranch - it was so much better than expected. My wife and I both enjoy horseback riding and taking advantage of being empty nesters, we like to escape occasionally to indulge in riding and the ranch experience. We've stayed at much more well-known "ranch resorts" or dude ranches. While amazing, they are a different experience altogether. The Double R is more of the true ranch experience (more intimate, and more hands on). Little things like family-style meals with guests, the ranch owner, and staff make for a truly great experience. We had a chance to talk about the day's multiple rides, "highlights of that day", and our individual experiences with our assigned horses. When we can be around horses, we want more than riding. We want the opportunity for more hands-on experiences like tacking our horse - that's not always allowed at other ranches. We were never asked to do this at Double R, but it was not denied when we asked. Their guidance made sure we did it correctly and double checked our work to ensure the safety of riders and horses. This was a huge plus for us. The rides were 3-5 hours, up and down hills, and through some of the most amazing southern Arizona deserts with views for miles and guides who knew the history of the area. Being raised in Arizona, I truly appreciate not only the views but the stories as well. The food was good home cooking with plenty to go around - we never left hungry. A very special Thank You to the amazing people who prepared the meals. We were surprised one evening to see they even offered words of affirmation in a note to each guest before dinner. I still have mine, Thank You! There are multiple options for lodgings. Like I said, this is not a resort, but a ranch and the different accommodations are assigned based on your needs and the number of people in your party. We stayed in a little cottage about a quarter mile away from everyone else (perfect!). It was clean and private, making it easy to feel like we were the only ones there. I didn't see the other accommodations but I talked with the other guests and they were more than satisfied with their lodgings as well. While we were there, the Benson Rodeo was happening on Saturday. The Double R Ranch was one of the major sponsors and we were given tickets to enjoy the rodeo. I've attended 7 amazing rodeos this year. But if you have never attended a truly small-town rodeo, you are missing out! You can feel the community at events like this with family and neighbors coming together. A pleasure to experience and feel welcomed by the locals of Benson and surrounding areas! I cannot express enough that their web page made me a little nervous with the minimalist approach on what they have to offer on this ranch. Okay, being completely honest I went into the trip just telling myself we'll make the best out of whatever we are going to experience and enjoy our trip. So, while they could probably use some upgrades in advertising, they do offer a great experience, and they know how to cowboy. While I hope they find great success, I hope the intimate experience never goes away. I will be back - probably more than a few times. This is a truly hidden treasure in the desert. We had such a great time that I want to tell everyone about it, but I also want to keep it as our secret place. But I must give them their due and wish continued success! Thank You!

First time in Tucson AZ and being a lover of animals and definitely horses I felt I wanted to experience Arizona and it's landscape on horseback. Luckily we found Ron and the Double R Ranch and contacted him directly to see what he could do. Please note that our GPS def got us there and you will question if you're on the right road but it should be fine. It does get to be unpaved and a bit bumpy but just keep at it and soon you'll see a sign for Double R Ranch. Also be sure to bring a hat, jeans, so good hiking shoes or boots, and sunscreen - oh and water. It can get hot in the desert - you'll be fine...Ron will take care of the rest. Ron was a gracious host and teacher and gave us a great tour of the southern Arizona countryside. He also taught us a couple tips as we rode, galloped, and trotted around his ranch and land. His horses were very well mannered, smart, and well trained. We learned more about the breeds, the area which parts is sacred Indian land, and the stories that Ron had kept us interested and intrigued - super fun! Overall it was a great experience and we sure will be back to do more adventures in the future

We had a great ride today. 6 of us 2 adults 4 kids ranging from all ages. All the horses were so well behaved and even for us beginners, the horses pretty much took care of us. Got great instruction and the owner and Poncho were there every step of the way. Definitely doing this again when we come back

The most amazing long-weekend getaway with the best people! The cabin, the food (thanks Kelly!), riding (thanks Poncho, Billy and Hannah!), trip to Tombstone (thanks Ron!), roping lessons (thanks Trina!) and laughs (previously mentioned as well as Renee) was an experience my husband and I will never forget! If you're looking for the ultimate ranch experience, I cannot recommend Double R enough!

My best friend and I have been meaning to get to Double R Ranch for years since we heard about the fast ride after we did a nice slow trail ride! I was a little worried as I'm more of an advanced beginner (I've done lessons here and there so I've cantered before and some trail rides with a friend's horse). The owner of the ranch was our guide and he was amazing! We got a little run down before we got on the horses as he, of course, wants to make sure you as the rider are safe and the horse is safe as well. He lets you know what to expect and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. This is literally the best 'trail' ride I've been on. The horses LOVED cantering when we got to those points of the ride. This really is a good mix of nice trail ride scenery and adrenaline! Can't wait to be able to come back again for this fast ride AND to try other things there! Also you can tell they take care of their horses and their horses LOVE their job which is super important for me! I got Waco he was a cutie but he liked to take his time walking

We were celebrating our Sista/Friend's birthday as we saddled up for our sunset horseback ride. Ron couldn't have been nicer. He is a great instructor and guide. We felt so comfortable on his ranch. We had a beautiful ride, the weather was perfect and the cute dogs that tagged along had such personality! Highly recommend the Double R Ranch for horseback riding. Thanks Ron!

I just spent 4 days at this ranch and had a GREAT time. Ron and Trina are amazing hosts and we enjoyed yummy meals and many laughs together! The cowboys Billy and Poncho were the best and each day we rode different breathtaking trails with them. They have a great selection of different horses and they are all the sweetest horses you can imagine!! Oh and if you're a dog person, you're gonna love all 8 of their dogs! Highly recommend this ranch!!!

We stumbled across this gem on face book and because of the other great reviews, decided to check it out. We were planning on going to some caverns in benson also on the same day, so we thought.... what the heck! Lets do it! The staff was friendly and really got to know you. We had 2 kids with us and they were very encouraging with them. They told the kids many times how great they were doing and if they were enjoying the ride. At the end, my son told the guy (all on his own, no prompting needed) That this was one of the best days of his life. He really liked riding and felt really comfortable on such a tall horse. The drive out to the property seemed long, but the drive back to the freeway was much quicker it seemed. (When you dont know where you are going, it can feel like forever to get there). We would definitely go back! We participated in the sunset trail ride.

If you believe one thing you read today, believe this: Double R Ranch is an amazing experience that you will never forget. I just did a 4 day 3 night "staycation" there, and I absolutely had the time of my life. I just can't put into words how much fun I had at the ranch, but I think it boils down to 4 main things: 1. The house. I don't think enough people have stayed overnight at the ranch, so let me just say: The guest house is gorgeous and I loved it. Honestly, I would have lived in that house if I could. Very cozy, very comfortable, and definitely felt like a home. Also, much bigger than you would expect. 2. The location. Words can't describe the scenery and the feel of the desert. It's so quiet, and so peaceful out there. You see something new on every trail ride. Just incredibly gorgeous. 3. The people (and the dogs). I cannot say enough nice things about the people at Double R Ranch. Ron and Trina made me feel like part of the family, and were so kind, accommodating, and so supportive throughout my entire stay. They definitely went above and beyond what I expected, and succeeded in making this a fantastic weekend getaway. They've done amazing things at Double R Ranch, and treat every guest like old friends. Poncho, the wrangler, is hilarious and poked fun at me the whole time. But I gave as good as I got and he eventually let me ride "his" horse, so we were even. And, of course, there are 8 of the friendliest dogs you will ever meet. They're your welcoming committee, your trail buddies, and always more than happy to eat any and all scraps from your meals. 4. Last, but certainly not least, the horses and the riding experiences. I love horses and rode them for the longest time, and I've missed being around them so much. I told Ron before getting out there, my goal was to spend as much time on horseback and with the horses as possible. This past weekend did not disappoint. I got to ride 5 different horses and go on a bunch of different trails, and I had so much fun on each one. (I rode Miss Vito, Gypsy, Catalina, Amigo, and Foxy. Each of them was awesome and I highly recommend them all. My favorite trails were the water tower and three peaks trails.) Whether I was helping groom or tack up horses, helping to turn out, or riding on one of my favorites, I definitely achieved my goal in getting to be around horses again. In conclusion? You will not regret going for a ride at Double R Ranch. You should definitely stay the night, but at the very least head out there for a ride. It's well worth it, and will be a memory you treasure for the rest of your life. I certainly will. read more

I was unfortunately very disappointed in my experience at Double R Ranch for the 2.5 hour trail ride. To begin, our 2.5 hour trail ride was only an hour and a half because we didn't begin until 0944. I was the first to be placed on my horse at 9 am and proceeded to wait with my horse for the next almost hour while everyone else was loaded on. My horse of course got inpatient towards the end and started walking around. Trina full on yelled at me and told me to back up my horse without explaining how to do so. This completely through me off before the ride even began. Trina was right behind me the entire ride and chastised me the entire time. Every 2 minutes she was correcting me or had something to say about the way I was riding when in fact, I was doing everything she was telling me to and was never unsafe or putting others at risk. I absolutely love constructive criticism but her comments were unnecessary and distracting rather than allowing me to get comfortable and used to the horse. She made the ride absolutely miserable. I was never able to relax or enjoy the ride because she wouldn't leave me alone. Another rider ahead had their jacket slightly fall off but she caught it before it fell to the ground. Trina started cussing about this in front of a 6 year old child next to her. I understand the need to keep everyone safe but she made the entire experience absolutely miserable for me and the other riders who so graciously gave you business. I would recommend easing up a bit and learning how to express your opinions in a polite manner instead of being condescending. read more

A friend and I went to this ranch in January, I have ridden here many years ago under the previous owner. I got a email from the new owners saying that they would like people to come back to see the improvements they've done to the ranch. Upon arrival at the ranch we were shown to a one bedroom with bath and back patio. Adequate accommodations, but not much improvement over the last time I visited. The pool and hot tub weren't in any shape to be used. The pool was half full, dead bird floating, and ugly looking water. The game room was dusty and not inviting. We did play pool and ping-pong but we had to dust everything off first. It was nice not have any television and being off the grid. The rides were nice but because of the time of the year the grass and trees look to dead. The weather was wonderful, very nice horses, we got to help feed them and tack our own mount up.The problem came when paying the bill as we were charged extra for that loping rides that we took. I had purchased a Groupon or LivingSocial and ended up playing paying double the price I anticipated. The young cowgirl who lived and grew up here was a great trail boss, very good rider and knew the area. I don't go to dude ranches because of the food but I must say that it was mediocre at best. They informed as the chef was on vacation but that is no excuse for cold food when there's only two guest and 4-5 employees to feed. They need to do the improvements and upgrades on the property before they advertise that it is completed.after running down the Grand Canyon on mules in the winter the scenery there was fair at best! read more

I stayed at the ranch with Ron and Trina for a week with a friend. I have been a serious English horseback rider all of my life showing in hunter/jumper circuits, but have recently been exposed to a whole new world, to me, of natural horsemanship and ground work, not just getting on and riding. My goal for the week was to be a sponge and learn as much as I could from Ron about Western riding, trail riding (learning what these horses are capable of in the mountains), natural horsemanship and ground work, and lastly learning how to use a round pen. Well, did I learn all of that and more! I came back to Pennsylvania with a whole new perspective on riding, training, and feeding. Ron and Trina were incredible hosts. They welcomed me into their home with open arms. They let me into their lives with telling stories of ranch life, rodeos, and family. I have learned so much about Western riding as a way of life and work which is much different than English riding as more of a sport of competing and discipline. All of the horses at the ranch were well cared for and had great manners. They were all different however, and I very much enjoyed riding a variety of horses throughout the week that would challenge my riding abilities and allow me to grow as a rider, person, and trainer. I don't know when I will get back to Double R Ranch again, but I know I will be back and ready to learn! My biggest take away "Soft is better, less is more." Thank you Ron and Trina for an incredible week of riding, fellowship, and experiences. You will never know how much you changed my perspective. Kristen Youndt Manheim, PA read more

First off, I generally don't leave reviews unless I feel someone should modify their expectations based on what's advertised - That being said, Ron and his team are in a league of their own. My 9 yr old daughter and I went out there for a 90 min ride, and perfect does not begin to describe it. Besides having excellent animals, and indescribable views, the overall vibe was the best we have experienced. To me most trail rides feel like a glorified carousel ride, riding nose to tail - out here Ron maintains a structure that keeps everyone in their comfort level, so that you can enjoy the scenery, the animals, and just relax. Just give him your experience and comfort level and he makes it all come together. In as much as it probably was not his intent, the name "Double R Guest Ranch" fits - when you arrive, his demeanor quickly makes you feel like a guest there to go for a (very memorable) ride...not a customer paying to sit on a horse. As much as there are MANY establishments closer to us (he his about 150 miles from phoenix) we are already planning our next trip out there. read more

What a wonderful experience! My parents, husband and I went to Double R ranch for a 5 mile horseback ride and dinner. The horses are so sweet and were great to ride and very friendly. The multiple dogs and cats are super friendly and will hang out with you during your entire visit. The 5 mile ride was gorgeous! We did the sunset ride and the views were beyond amazing! Ron is amazing and checked in on all four of us during the ride to make sure we were having a fun time! Dinner was just as amazing! We had a four course dinner outside on the patio by candlelight! From the appetizer to the salad and garlic bread, everything was delicious! The potatoes were seasoned just perfect and the ice tea and lemonade complimented the meal perfectly. This was an outstanding experience and I highly recommend to anyone who is considering it. The best season to go is December through April due to the wonderful Arizona weather. We are highly considering the half day or full day ride as well! Thank you for your wonderful hospitality!! read more

We had a great time. The ranch is not far from Tucson. Our Boy scout Troop and families went for a day ride. Ron greeted us with Kindness and enthusiasm from the start. He patiently matched each of the children with a horse. He made them feel comfortable when getting on and throughout the ride. After they were in the Saddle Trina continued to make them feel comfortable teaching them how to control their horses. All of the youth that have never been on a horse were so excited to come back and proud of their accomplishment of getting on a horse. For those parents and grandparents that had not been on in a while Ron and Trina were equally as patient. This is the best place for young people to learn how to ride. Our boys are already planning their return. If you have big groups and you need to split up your rides there is a beautiful patio area to wait in and Nice picnic tables to have lunch. I would highly recommend this for groups of children and parents alike. read more

My boyfriend and I planned a cross country road trip and wanted to do something that would be fun and safe. We came across Double R Ranch while doing some research and decided to check it out! When we arrived, we were greeted by 9 adorable dogs, all super friendly. The people who worked with the horses, were very friendly and welcoming when we arrived. The process of filling out forms, learning how to get on the horses, and how to safely ride them, was smooth and very easy. We have to give extra kudos to their patience as we had accidentally locked our keys in the car and had to delay our ride and had to wait for a locksmith to come by. The hospitality and the cute dogs certainly helped while we were dealing with that stressful situation. We both highly recommend this ranch for anyone who is new to riding. read more

The owner was so nice when I called to see if he does trail rides for non guest he said yes. We were short on time and he worked with us and did a sunset trail. When my dad, sister and I got there we were welcome by the pack team of dogs so cute and very friendly. Ron was very friendly, we got to do hands on with horse due to our experience. I was able to ride, due to me little bigger then others, but Duke the horse was a big tall one. The area was beautiful, valley view was gorgeous at night time. All and all the double r ranch was 10+. The owners very nice, pleasant and friendly. Can't wait to go again. Book now if you want a pleasant and fun ride. read more

This is my second time to the Double R Ranch and my first time to the new location. The horses I rode were amazing and the wranglers were fantastic. We covered quite a bit of country and it was great. The Casita I stayed in was warm and comfortable. The food by Karen and Renee was amazing. I'm surprised I didn't gain weight. The host Ron and Trina are fantastic and make you feel instantly at home like part of the family. I rode over 70 miles in two weeks and enjoyed every mile. By the way, I am blind and enjoyed the ranch, the people, the animals, and environment. I will be back next year again. read more

My friend and I visited this ranch recently and loved it! It is situated remotely at the base of the Rincon Mountains, with 360 degrees of gorgeous scenic views! Our trail ride was amazing! We did the 1.5 hour ride and we were bummed when it was over! We are definitely going back for a longer ride next time. The owners of Double R are great people who really care about your experience and their horses are well-trained and beautiful. I'm giving Double R 5 stars because it was everything a horse ranch in Arizona should be and more! read more

Amazing experience! I took my husband for his birthday and we have such a great time! The drive from Tucson was not too far and Ron and his wife and the staff were all so friendly and accommodating. They greeted us with a warm welcome and gave us great instructions for riding horses since we are beginners. The ride was gorgeous and their company was great. The horses were well trained and well taken care of. I highly recommend the Double R Ranch if you want a fun and relaxing activity to do with some great people! read more

My wife and I were lucky enough to visit Tucson and ride at the Double R Ranch. We arrived and were amazed by the whole experience. Ron had horses selected and waiting for us. He chatted with us about our experience level and let us select a ride that was both challenging and beautiful. The elevation gave us unimaginable views that were at least 50 miles away. Our ride lasted a littler longer then expected (which was great) and we finished with photos and giving treats to the horses. read more

We had an incredible experience today with our 10 year old girl who is building her confidence via equestrian therapy. Ron gave her a lesson which included grooming the horse, riding in the arena, reining left and right, stopping and all she needed to start to feel confident. She was ecstatic about her very first horse experience. The ranch was just beautiful and scenic in every direction. Highly recommend this beautiful facility. Excellent in every way! read more

This was our first time riding horseback, and it was an unforgettable experience. The whole process was done with ease and respect for myself and my son. Ron made sure that myself and my son were completely comfortable for beginning, while on the ride, and at the end. He also took time to take pictures for us! It's located in a remote area which is peaceful and a great escape from the city. I would highly recommend anyone thinking of visiting! read more

These guys are AMAZING!! We had so much fun out at the Double R Ranch. When we arrived the wonderfully welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable staff designed a ride to suit our varied riding ability. This is not the standard trot around the tiny corral, they actually take you out riding amongst the stunning desert scenery. Super kid friendly, and wildly accommodating to the needs of the lil ones. I would recommend going here if you want to go for an enjoyable ride with a great staff. Ron, who I'd only talked to on the phone, met us when we arrived and welcomed us like we were old friends. We will definitely go back and ride with them again. read more

Just came back from a great ride. Ron made some exceptions for us so we could have a great ride. I brought 4 guys that hadn't ridden much and Ron put together a great ride for their skill level.
