Small fenced off part of the lake where swimming is allowed unlike the rest of the lake
    Emma C.

A great spot for a day trip or a nearby one night camping get away. The sounds of birds sing loud and the peaceful atmosphere can bring you bliss if you visit when little to no people are around. The area is small and does not offer to much, just a few short trails, bathrooms, camp sites, RV hook ups, benches, and tables. A lake in which you can kayak but only in designated areas, a tiny swimming spot gated off perfect for wading in as its shallow most spots but carful for the sharp degree and tangles of algae and bunches of branches. I've been here 3 times now twice before covid and it was absolutely amazing I drove 2 hours to come here just to let my dog swim as its peaceful and serene. The most recent time I visited in April of 2021 there was much more people camping and hiking around. Again I drove far to come to this specific spot even though there are many other swim spots closer to Katy, Tx I could have chose to go to. Again my dog flapped around and splashed around having the time of her life in the little water spot referred to as a "beach". No one else was in the water no one else was near the "beach" no one seemed to mind my dog joyously diving in the murky water. Yet a women whom I assume works for the park approached me on a golf cart and rudely told me my dog can't swim. I genuinely was unaware of this as it had never been an issue nor have I ever seen a sign. Surprised I apologized to her and she went on telling me how I will be ticketed, how my playful mermaid dog could bite someone (stereotyping my dog as she has pitbull features, she assumed my girl was some viscous rabid killer). She didn't stop there the rude and unnecessary remarks continued to spout from her mouth while I still shell shocked and heavy heartedly dragged my dog from the water as she resisted. I informed her I was never informed nor did I have any prior knowledge from the park signs that dogs couldn't go into the water and told her i would leave. Counter responsive she replied "you don't have to leave " but followed with several other nit picking things that I was doing wrong . Such as my dog peed in the grass 15 feet away from the water and " That's why dogs can't enter the beach area because people walk there " oh and "your dog must always be leashed on a 6foot leash " as I sat with my 8foot leash that had not once been off my dog. I was disappointed to say in the least that I was treated so unfairly as many of the campers seemed to get a laugh out of seeing my dog be so silly and happy. I won't be visiting again as there isn't much to see or do here anyways. There are several other more scenic and vast campgrounds within the forrest. Also even before covid they say they offer kayak and canoe rentals but i've yet to see a time when they actually were letting you rent kayaks as the sign always said currently we are not renting out any kayaks or canoes. The whole National Forest is astonishing and if you want to stop on a hot summer day to eat lunch somewhere outdoors and get your toes wet this might be your spot but for any other reason other than that I would go visit any other site in the forrest as there are way more scenic and adventurous than the Double Lake Recreation Area.

What a treat to have this park just an hour outside of Houston. My boyfriend and I came in February, while it was not only cold, but it rained all weekend! That didn't stop us from having a great camping experience here, though. We stayed on the primitive camping side (no water or electric). We chose an open spot and set up camp. I believe we were in spot 16 which we both believed to be the largest, most spread out campsite right in front of the lake. Bathrooms were close and they were kept clean. As a woman, the sink was small and the one shower stall was not ideal. We stayed here in the winter and were one of two filled sites. Had we been here in the middle of summer with several other campers, I could see this shower situation being a problem. Water got pretty warm so that was nice!! The lake was great. Fishing was not so great. Not worth bringing you pole..... There was standing water around the lake which in the summer would probably attract a lotttt of mosquitoes.... There was a good amount of people hiking and biking. From what we were told, there are 122 miles of hike/bike trails. While we were there, there was a group of probably 50 boyscouts. At about 3pm on Saturday we started hearing them yell out for two boys who had gotten lost in the woods. They yelled for hours and flashlights were roaming around all night. If nothing else - let that be a lesson to make sure you have cell service or are familiar with the routes before heading into the woods. Overall, this is a great winter/spring/fall camp ground. Some of the sites seemed very small, so I would suggest making reservations.

    Beautiful evening for a campfire

It is so beautiful and quiet out here! Neighbors are so scattered so you get to enjoy nature! Definitely let the kiddos bring their bikes or scooters. The campsites are very unleveled so make sure you bring some levelers or wood. None of that wifi or cable out here so don't forget your bean bag toss and your playin cards! Showers are close and the water is warm. Don't forget anything cause the nearest Walmart is 1/2 an hour away. There is a small grocery store and a dollar general down the road. And if you venture out, make sure you stop by The Hop for burgers & shakes! If your interested in historic sites, the old jail museum, hanging tree, and other historic buildings are nearby. Also plenty of antique stores in Coldspring.

Campsites are very close, but I went there for the "mountain" biking. Made me miss Colorado, but better than nothing, I guess. poorly marked trails, have you going in circles, but everything looks the same anyway. Eventually you find yourself back on blacktop.

This is a great camping location, very peaceful and beautiful. My only complaint would be the abundance of dead and alive spiders all over the restrooms/showers. However I would definitely still consider going back there again.

I don't know where to begin. I love my campsite but it is very very desolate. Nobody here but me and Bigfoot. The bathrooms have no light so be sure to use them during the day. Our closest bathroom has (one men and one women) one potty and one open shower with ice cold water. It's so hot here that the shower was refreshing. ;). Was advised that I needed to buy firewood here from concession stand. Nobody at the greeting hut on entrance. Drove around til I found my spot. No info, no firewood, no concession stand. I do love camping but this may be a bit more primitive than I bargained for. Had to go through the woods looking for twigs to build my pitiful fire. Flies are aggressive and seem to have developed an immunity to citronella. There are also a plethora of little caterpillars everywhere. I have to drive to town in the am and buy bug spray and firewood. That is, if I stay. I like privacy but it is freaky here at night knowing I am alone. The concession stand hasn't opened this season yet. It's almost July. So I'm not sure what to say about that. Sure isn't what I would call thriving. Went to town to check out the local museum/jail. It was cool but closed. I think it's open every other weekend for five minutes on a Saturday. Right now we are boiling inside our tent because we are too scared to open the windows. I have two kitchen knives on the cooler beside my bed. Just in case Bigfoot decides he is hungry!

Great biking trails here and being able to camp is just makes it so much more worth the drive. Good times.

Finally made it out to Blue Lagoon in Huntsville, Texas. Vis was 10-15ft due to recent rain. 68° at…read morethe surface and 64° bottom temp at 25ft. They have an underwater rope course you can use to navigate from one side to the other. The waters color and clarity come from its origin. It was originally a Limestone Rock Quarry. Spring water has filled it up making this a good dive location. Another feature I found to be very cool for instructors is the large underwater decks. These are part of the course and make a great place to perform dive skills without disturbing the silt on the bottom. My dive site had an easy entry and exit. The depth ranges depending on the amount of rain throughout the year. This is a great place to teach new students, practice your skills, or train as a dive team. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Being this was my first time here they answered all of my questions.

I have always been curious about this place. Today I finally got the chance to go. I am not a diver…read moreso my perspective is limited to swimming. 1. I kept thinking when I was there that the city of Huntsville or some wealthy person should buy this place and fix it up. It has so much potential. Right now it is "rustic". Roads unpaved, covered picnic areas falling apart. It's a shame. 2. The water itself is like lake water. It's ok but not as lovely as pictures seen online. I kept thinking...at least no alligators! The term BLUE lagoon is misleading. 3. I understand that this is primarily a scuba diving place. But the attitude in phone calls and the employees was like you were second class Citizen if you were a "swimmer". Finally, I was the only one there! I guess $30 is way too much for what you get here. I enjoyed my swim but I will not return is
