I didn't really have a go-to Mexican restaurant here in Athens, and then a friend introduced me to this place today. The prices are pretty decent (I paid $15 for food and a drink) and the restaurant itself seems very clean. The bathrooms were really tidy. My fav part of the experience were the $2 house margaritas. Apparently, they are $2 all day on Mondays and b/w 3-5PM on all other days, even weekends. I had the steak tacos and the steak itself was very well season and they were very generous with the meat on the tacos. I wasn't a fan of being charged 99 cents (a piece) for sour cream and cheese for the tacos. Chips and salsa were free though and they bring out two types of salsas. Our server, Dora, was really on it. We never wanted for anything. The only thing missing that would've made my experience better is outdoor seating. I'll definitely be back. read more

We've been to Dos Palmas (http://www.dospalmasmex.com) several times and have kept coming back. On our most recent visit, we shared the Dos Palmas Sampler (chicken fajita nachos, beef flautas, chicken quesadillas) along with the "Two crispy beef tacos with rice and beans" meal. The ground beef in the tacos is prepared in the Athens, GA way ~ which is to say that it doesn't taste very much like the ground beef you would get in tacos served in the Southwest. But, I'm getting used to it, and the shell and toppings (white cheese and fresh lettuce) are high quality. The rice and beans are respectable, chips better than average, and spicy salsa very good (mild is bleh). Our beef flautas were overdone, but the chicken dishes were quite good (especially the quesadillas). All in all, we'll be back, but perhaps we'll avoid the flautas in the future. read more

My husband trapped it under a jar of Tabasco, but it escaped and came at me. I shrieked and jumped from the table and got my waitress. It reappeared soon after she left and my husband slayed it. Still, for every one roach you see, there are hundreds that you don't. The nonchalance by the staff is even more off putting. The thought of eating there again sends shivers up my spine. Update: I called the manager to let him know. There was no apology, no thanks for letting him know. I suggested he get an exterminator and he said he just had one visit a few weeks ago. When I pointed out that clearly, the treatment didn't take, he said, "Okay, I guess I'll call him again." Why should I have to convince a manager to address his roach problem? Take yourself out of the parking lot, onto Mitchell Bridge Road, all the way to Tallassee Road to another restaurant abutting a gas station which shall remain nameless (coughsrsolcough). You'll pay less, like it more, and get your food while you're young enough to eat it without a Maalox chaser. The decor is typical, and the service is good. It's not her fault she's bringing what her kitchen lays out. The requisite chips and salsa are fine, nothing great and nothing terrible. The food took forever to show up, and I want that hour of my life back because it was NOT worth the wait. I had a tostada and a taco, and for my money, I'll take fast food tacos instead. It wasn't truly horrible but I expect better out of the Athens food scene. In fact, our age-old local fast-food taco chain serves up way better beef. My husband ordered a burrito which, in a bizarre twist that didn't quite work out, showed up drenched in what I can only describe as canned enchilada sauce, along with a taco identical to mine in mediocrity. My dad had it in his head he wanted to try fish tacos, and though they were by far the best thing on the table, I wish he'd had them someplace else because they were certainly not a good example of the pure awesomeness of a good fish taco. The margarita (rocks and salt) was fine. I had ordered frozen but I'm thankful for the error because I'd lay odds there would be watery ice chunks in the frozen version, just based on the level of care and thought put into the rest of the food. I think it only cost two bucks, though, so for the money I don't see how you could do better. Stop at one unless you want to pray for death later, though. Quick version: leave now, eat better, save money, get on with your life. But maybe have a non-frozen drink first. read more

Dos Palmas is the place to go in Athens. You won't find better Food, Service or Management in any other Restaurant establishment in Athens. If you have family or friends in town you can't let them return home without visiting Dos, highly recommend for all to enjoy! read more

I don't really have much to say about this restaurant. They pretty much have the same "go to" menu of any other Mexican joint in America. The chips and salsa and the hot wings were the about the best thing I ate all night. There are better options in Athens that are far better with more variety on there menus. Love the food here. Service is normally pretty good. Fish Tacos are good as well as the chips. Guacamole is hit or miss but when it's good, it's good- not too blended up or runny. I can't even give this place one star. Terrible terrible service. I was at lunch with a friend this week and I found a rubber band in the salsa. We told our waiter and he went over to who I thought was the manger. The manager was obviously very busy playing on his phone. So important that he didn't even have time to come over and apologize. I was really surprised that Dos Palmas was not rated higher! It is fairly typical Mexican American food, but if that's what you're looking for it best I've been to in Athens. I usually get the Dos Palmas sampler which comes with more than enough food for two people so we'll spit it. I've never had exceptional service, but it has also never been noteworthily bad. The chicken fajitas are great as are the fajita nachos! If you are looking for just a normal Mexican restaurant I would definitely suggest Dos Palmas. read more

I ordered grilled shrimp burrito. The server delivered my plate with an oven mitt and flourish, declaring the plate was very hot, and "Don't touch!" The entire plate was drowning in queso sauce, including the rice and the salad. I took a bite of the rice and was surprised that it was barely room temperature. Everything was cold and it was covered with this thin, flavorless, tepidly warm mildly orange sauce. I mean COVERED, like someone dumped a bowl of soup over the plate before it left the kitchen! I then timidly touched the plate because I was so puzzled by how cold the food was, only to discover the plate was cold. It was cold like it came off the salad buffet line. Good grief! What went wrong in the kitchen that night. My waiter never returned. I ate the shrimp inside the burrito which WAS hot and very good, paid my bill and left. I emailed the restaurant through their website to let them know so they could remedy whatever problem was going on in their kitchen that night and got no response. I guess they don't care which tells me that indications are strong that this will happen again to another patron. So, think twice before you eat at Dos Palmas. I don't know that I've ever given a bad review to a restaurant, I usually just don't go back if I don't like the meal, but the ridiculousness of the server delivering that cold plate and cold food with an oven mitt and the warning not to touch the hot plate, along with management's failure to respond and say they are looking into the problem and will be correcting any issues in their kitchen leads me to say, "Hey, stay home and throw a burrito in the microwave before you head on down to Dos Palmas, cause at least you know your burrito will be HOT!" read more

Our favorite Mexican restaurant in Athens and the only one the kids will go to. Although I will have to say we usually have to ask for fresh chips, For some reason the ones they bring always taste stale, but when they bring the fresh chips, they are warm and tasty. Solid Mexican restaurant. Good food and decent to go service. Menu is what you expect from a typical, traditional Mexican restaurant. Good specials depending on the day. I usually order fish tacos and they have about half the fish of other Mexican restaurants in the area - over multiple times of ordering and mentioning to staff. I came for Nachos supreme with shredded chicken and specifically requested the liquid cheese. The waitress brought my food, dropped it off and walked away. After she walked away, I realized she brought me fajita nachos. I know what you think, who would complain about that? Me, and here is why...I hate bell peppers. Seriously hate them. The taste is disgusting and it gets on everything. So I looked around trying to find my waitress. She is no where. I wait and watch. Nothing. Finally, I just start picking off the nasty peppers and eat. Finally I see her across the room and flag her down. When I tell her it isn't what I ordered, she actually argues with me and tells me that nachos supreme comes with bell peppers and onions. Even when I explain her own menu, she argues. So, I speak with Haley, the Manager. She explains that my waitress is new and didn't realize the peppers on the fajita nachos differ from the peppers on the supreme nachos. She also apologized for my waitress arguing with me. She was sincere and I appreciated that, and I will return!! Oh, and that fajita chicken was the bomb!!! This place is one of those hidden gems; a local joint that you would probably bypass unless you knew about it beforehand. We went based on a relative's recommendation, and it was worth the visit. It's nothing to look at, but the food is excellent. I think this is the best Mexican restaurant in Athens Ga...maybe in all of Georgia. They have the BEST fish tacos I've ever had. They use the freshest fish available, which in my case, was halibut. I was given whole grilled fillets in my tacos, not shredded fish. The beans, rice, guacamole, etc were excellent as well.
