I was concerned that it'd be hard to get the joint properly repaired, and/or prohibitively expensive. I stopped by Custom Metal Manufacturing around opening time. The workshop is a treasure trove: minibikes, custom signs, and sculptures everywhere. Ed and Gerard were super friendly and great storytellers. Ed looked at the frame, said "I can fix that", and fired up his welding gear right away. Ten minutes of good conversation later the work was done, and at a very reasonable price. The joint is now reinforced with ample steel, and the hole is closed up. Everything I hoped for and more.

Trimetric Specialties in Union City was given three drill bits to shorten and re-machine, a simple…read morejob. But they failed. My foreman picked up the bits and the first one broke after drilling a few holes, and the other two were taken back. The flaws are evident in the re-machining, photographed below, the grooves drilled are not the same size and shape as the original, but rather than measuring precisely the grooves in the bit machine by the manufacturer, they seemed to be done by eyeballing each bit and slowly improving. The best is the one photographed below. After 5 ADDITIONAL MONTHS, Trimetric did nothing to improve their shoddy work, except make promises every 2-3 weeks that they would do it the following week, but never did. Finally, I went back there and picked up the bits and took them elsewhere. My advice is to avoid this place. My time and money were lost on this shop.

Just recently, we went back to get a few more shelves (what better review could there be), I realized I never posted about how happy I was. We were originally looking at big box stores for some organizational shelves for our garage. I figured we would be able to find something, but honestly I was amazed at how bad the choices were at most places: flimsy shelves, not many options for sizes, and the prices were not even all that cheap. Finally, I expanded my search, and found Western Shelving. I thought they might not want to deal with a private homeowner, but it was no problem: I called them up, told them what I wanted, and picked up the parts with no problem. The price was close to what the big box stores were charging, and the quality is seriously incredibly better. Really, there's almost no comparison: the shelves we put in last year, and have used/abused with all sorts of heavy, messy garage equipment, are working perfectly. Like I said, when we decided to add a few more shelves, I didn't even spend any time considering other options -- I just went right back to Western Shelving.
