This man saved my life! Seriously…read more I had a herniated disc and was literally bent over 90 degrees because I could not stand up straight due to my discs. After further testing, my family doctor received the report that my excruciating back pain was not a simple muscle pain but a herniated disc!!!! My family doctor then referred me to Mary Rutan Orthopedics and thankfully for me, there was a cancellation due to the crazy snow storm we recently had so I was able to see Dr. Smith that same week. Dr. Smith came in, with a friendly smile, and really seemed like he cared. After examining me, he concluded that surgery would be the best method of treatment for me. Eek! Surgery! It was not the answer I wanted to hear but I fully trusted Dr. Smith and agreed to have surgery. After pre-op procedures, I was scheduled for surgery. The day of the surgery, Dr. Smith came into my room and reassured me that everything will be fine. Despite the fact that my surgery was scheduled so early in the morning at 7:30am, Dr. Smith still had a smile and made me feel at ease and calmed my nerves down. So fast forward to after surgery... immediately, I was able to stand up FULLY. Yes, there was obviously pain near the incision mark due to surgery but I was able to stand up for the first time in weeks! Keep in mind, I have been walking crouched down because of my back pain and literally within hours of the surgery, I was cured. Amazing! I am so thankful that I was able to make an appointment with Dr. Smith and had the surgery by him. After researching him, it looks like he had his orthopedic spine surgery fellowship done at New Albany Surgical Hospital and apparently hearing from my medical school friend, that's the place to learn from when it comes to spine surgery! I highly highly recommend Dr. Smith to anyone that has spine problems or even orthopedic surgery related issues. You won't regret it!

With 50-plus years as an established medical practice, Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton is the oldest and most respected orthopedic practice in the region. The practice began in 1971 as Dayton Orthopaedic Associates in a downtown location with only two doctors, Dr. Pietro Seni and Dr. Daniel Camacho. In the early years, their doctors were general orthopaedists. However, Dr. Camacho wanted to limit his practice to hand surgery. It was then decided that all physicians would have a specific specialty - a unique concept in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1980 the practice's name was changed to Orthopaedic and Hand Surgeons and was located on Woodman Drive in Dayton. Dr. Frank Mannarino (sports medicine) joined the practice in 1981, followed by Dr. Richard Forster (total joint replacement) and Dr. Paul Nitz (sports medicine) in 1991. Gradually, the practice kept growing and solidifying the subspecialty orthopedic philosophy. Dr. Eugene Kim (hand) joined the group in 1998, followed by Dr. Kevin Paley (sports medicine), who moved his practice to the Orthopaedic Institute in the early 2000s. Dr. Jeffrey Hoskins came to the practice in 2005 following his spine fellowship. Dr...

I have a thirty-three degree scoliosis curve that was just discovered two summers ago when I went…read morein to have x-rays taken for my sprained shoulder. I was super freaked to find out about my twisted spine, even more so when I started researching the surgery that corrects it. Let's just say it involves a pneumothorax, rib removal, metal rods/bolts, a few months of strict bed rest, and at least six months recovery to normal activities like brushing your hair and bathing yourself. Ugh. From the ER where I found out about my spine, I went to my family doctor, then a pain specialist (though I was in no pain), then to get more X-rays, then to a neurosurgeon in Marion who made me do a circus dance and measured me from just about every angle. The neurosurgeon said I was okay and that I just needed to be monitored via X-ray every five years or so. I was relieved and happy to hear that I didn't need the surgery. I avoided getting a second opinion because I was too afraid of someone telling me that the Marion surgeon was mistaken and that I needed surgery pronto. But, I recently mustered the nerve to visit Dr. Jason Dapore for a second opinion (and just to get a doctor closer to where I'm living now). Dr. Dapore is everything I hoped he would be. He is prime age for a doc - not too old and set in his ways, he is young enough to know about new technology and procedures. But he isn't too young so as to be inexperienced. He made me do the circus dance again and looked closely at my X-Rays. He let me ask him a zillion questions. He was very patient with me. He reassured me that I do not need the surgery now, and probably won't ever need it if I keep my back strong and flexible. He set me up with a physical therapy team in the same building where I'm learning a lot about and already feeling better about being proactive with my scoliosis. The rest of Dr. Dapore's staff is also excellent, and the building is top-notch. The waiting room is large with many options on where to sit and a skylight at the apex of the room. There's also a good variety of reading material from Highlights to Entertainment Weekly to the Dispatch. The ladies at the front desk even make an effort to memorize your name and pronounce it correctly. Plus, the two bathrooms in the front (bathrooms are my niche) are big and always clean. I would give Dr. Dapore 6 stars and a hug if I could, but alas, five will do.

Dr. Woods looked at the Mri he'd ordered & showed us the issue at the old fusion site. Her caged fusion is pushing into her bundle of nerves. It Seemed like a pretty straightforward procedure. Remove the old hardware, re-do the fusion properly, put new rods&screws in, and pray that the nerves are not PERMANENTLY damaged. We're awaiting surgery now.
