Northwestern is where the AMA was born. This is where Philip Kotler spent his storied career revolutionizing the maketing field. Their faculty are among the world's leaders in research. *The resources offered by Kellogg are amazing. If you're coming here for a doctorate, all the research resources you'll ever need will be given to you: computer, software, research funding, travel grants, IT support, and a very very generous stipend/fellowship to support your living expenses. If you come here for an MBA, then you should already have an idea about how heavily-recruited Kellogg is by corporations and the big consulting firms (McKinsey, BCG, Booz&Co, and Bain&Co). *Aside from just Marketing, Kellogg is a Top 5 business school (as recognized by most MBA rankings), and Northwestern University is an elite private undergrad institution that turns heads. I really didn't look too much at these two rankings since the faculty and their respective department matters more for Ph.D. considerations, but it's nice to know I'm in good company all around. *Evanston is the type of college-town I fell in love with after spending a summer in Chapel Hill, NC (a nice change from my undergrad in La Jolla, CA). There is a small-town spirit, and the city is very very revolved around Northwestern (NCAA football season is underway, and all the businesses have their Purple on). *Unlike some other small college-towns, Evanston has a big bustling city in Chicago right in its backyard. The heart of downtown is located just 12 miles south of Evanston, which can conveniently be reached by the 'El' (Purple Line), Metra (UP-N to OTC), Northwestern Shuttle (Intercampus to Northwestern Memorial Hospital or the Chicago Express to The Loop), by car, or even by bike (Chicago is extremely flat compared to California, and I'm loving it). *The food scene is much better in Chicago and the surrounding area than it is in the other cities that house the programs I got into (Philadelphia, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Gainesville, Boulder, St. Louis, and Houston), and if you look at my reviews, then you know I LOVE my food. Chicago is one of the only three cities in the US that has a Michelin Guide; it's the home of famous epicurean destinations of 'Alinea' and 'Next' (chef: Grant Aschatz), 'L2O' (chef: Laurent Gras), and Charlie Trotter's namesake. Combine this with famous Chicago fare of Deep Dish Pizza (you can find Lou Malnati's in downtown Evanston, or go out into the city for Pequods), Chicago Dogs (Hot Dougs in Chicago and Portillo's everywhere), Italian Beef (Al's Beef and Portillo's), and everything else! Before applying, I thought I had no chance of getting into my dream school for my PhD, but here I am today. If Kellogg is a good fit for you, just apply and see what happens!

I've taken random elective courses here, and I've always enjoyed the classes as well as the professors who've taught them! The courses offered are usually pretty rigorous and challenging, sometimes even more so compared to your base school! With competitive resident/non-resident per credit hour costs, it's also gentle on your wallet, too! Plenty of free parking!

As a Kellogg EMBA student, I was able to stay at The James L. Allen Center one last time before…read morethis becomes a historic location and post. The center (as explained by another Yelper below) is where Kellogg EMBA students stay during their program weekends and for Global Network Week and various other program efforts. Soon, the Allen Center will be demolished and replaced with a brand new facility scheduled to be up and running in two years time. Meanwhile students will work out of the downtown Chicago campus. The rooms were minimal as stated in the other post. And yes the center was designed to encourage networking and being together. The grounds are stunning during summer months as you can exercise and truly enjoy all there is to offer (and there is a lot!). A school supporter has donated their art to decorate the building. Lots of cool stories in this place! I'm a fan. I'd do it all over again. I never had the chance to stay in a dorm in undergrad so this was it for me. Great times, fantastic school! Thankful for it all!!!

Located right on the shore of Lake Michigan, the location is lovely, with views from most rooms of ponds, greenery and Lake Michigan. The classes that are offered are taught by an amazing faculty with a wide range of experiences both inside and outside the classroom. It's important to note, that the Allen Center is set up to facilitate conversation amongst the students (executives from businesses all over the world ) so it is structured to push people together. Spending time in your room is not encouraged so there are no TV's in the sleeping rooms. In fact, the rooms are functional, at best, with the basic necessities only, although they do provide shampoo, conditioner, soap, a hairdryer and iron and ironing board. The common areas are where the real discussions take place, from the state of the art classrooms, to the common dining rooms where you eat three meals a day, to the common break areas. In the evening, cocktail areas are set up in the various common areas to again foster dialog between the various groups who are in the facility at the same time. If you want to exercise- they will give you a pass to the NU Sports Center which is perfect for a quick workout, swim or game of tennis. They also have bikes available that you can take out to the bike path along the lake. Or there is a small workout facility right in the Allen Center. Trust me. This place is not fancy. I can't think of the last time I wasn't able to watch the news while I got ready in the morning. But this place is all about focusing on the task at hand which is learning and sharing and any distraction to that is minimized. Oh well . . .I guess I'll get my homework done after all! Not much else to do around here!

NEIU is the university in the city that people forget about. I haven't been a student here, but I came for a training session. It was held on a Friday so it's possible that is why, but the parking was wide open the entire day. But what is annoying beyond measure is that in 2024 the school requires you to go into the parking office (which is near the public safety office, if you need to know) to purchase a hangtag permit. And if it's not bad enough that they don't have a pay box or app or something for this task, they only take cash. I happened to have cash on this visit--but that is exceedingly rare for me. And nope, no ATM in the office or maybe even nearby since the guy didn't point me to one. The other thing that surprised me is that whatever department is in charge of external events/ meetings is somewhat disorganized, because they hadn't told the organizers of the training where said training would be held until I asked the day before the event. That seems like a pretty basic thing for whatever department manages these things to let people know what room they're going to be in. They have some nice facilities, probably especially their less than five year old dorms. NEIU is a public university so the tuition will be more affordable than a lot of other universities around. They have a Cafe Descartes in their student center, which I hadn't heard of before but of which I am now a fan. They also host most of the Chicago Film Society events; I've been here for a few of them and they have nice facilities for the screenings.

I was charged almost $500 for the paint "damages" although it was small things due to my lights and posters. I painted over them as well before leaving. The rest of the staff (janitors/maintenance) are overall nice people.

My rating is solely because I've been on a bunch of campuses for book signings, and it's ALWAYS super complicated to figure out how to get from Point A to Point B (including my own alma maters). I went to this location solely for a Red Cross blood donation drive. I love how their campus is set up. Not only did they have signs on the doors and a cone out front to figure out which building to get into, but as soon as I opened my mouth to ask a student where the building was, I turned and saw a clear map to find it on my own. (I was super close so she pointed me the rest of the way. Friendly young lady.) Since I can no longer find this location in upcoming blood drives, I'm assuming that Red Cross may not be there permanently. But the campus is clean. The front desk people (for the school) were professional. The two students (workers?) who were on the Red Cross side were organized and professional. And the attendees behind the tent were great too. I hope Loyola Rogers Park makes this a permanent thing. Although I walked, it's very convenient that it's accessible by the el. And it was nothing at all like all the complications I experienced at another facility trying to donate plasma. It took me longer to walk to the school than it did for the actual six-minute donation. Kudos to them for allowing Red Cross onto their campus.

I transferred to Loyola from Occidental College. From the moment I began at Loyola, I felt that the…read moreadministration barely even was aware of my existence. I was not given housing, financial aid, or any support with finding off campus housing near the school. When I started taking classes, I was appalled at the lack of quality among instructors. I had professors who would not show up to class, or would give me assignments that I could see they purchased online, because they hadn't taken out the name of the company or the teacher instructions. With class registration, I found academic advisors often gave me different answers, and it was a genuine challenge to see the same advisor twice. Currently, the course offerings are so slim in my major (business management) that it is hard to select a class schedule where even half of the classes are going towards my major. In summary, this is not a school for finishing your degree quickly or efficiently. It's the kind of institution where you'll have to take a lot of classes that feel pointless and random because they are. And those are the professors who are least likely to actually care about the quality of their instruction. You'll be in a cohort of students who don't seem to really give a damn. Most of my classes are filled with 80-85% of the students on their computers playing NYT games or watching youtube. Most of the classes I have taken have been lecture format, where a professor goes through slides at the front of a silent classroom. I've had many classes with 2 or 3 graded assignments in the entire semester. Most of my Professors don't give any feedback on homework or tests and certainly never return them, and so it's generally pretty difficult to know how to improve. On the student life side, the student body is incredibly cliquey and unwelcoming. After two and a half years at the organization, I know 0 fellow Loyola students by name. I do not recommend transferring here. I really regret it. This school knows how to put lipstick on the pig, but it is far from a premier institution. If you're looking in Chicago, Loyola presents the worst ratio of cost/value of education. Look elsewhere!!
