I started my day with the Eggs Benedict (English muffin, two poached eggs, and ham covered in hollandaise sauce and served with hash browns, $10.50). I don't usually order eggs benedict but on this particular rainy morning in John Day it was just what I needed. It filled me up for my entire 6 mile hike in the cold and snow. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hollandaise was very fresh, definitely made that morning. I thought my English muffin was a little overheated, it was chewy in the edges but still edible. My hash browns could have used a couple more minutes on the grill but again, good enough to eat! My husband kept it simple by ordering f the Classic (two eggs cooked any style, served with choice of bacon, sausage, polish or turkey sausage, hash browns and toast, $11.00). He enjoyed his breakfast as well. Eggs were a little overcooked but nothing a little maple syrup couldn't fix! I loved the fact that he got 4 sausage links instead of the usual two that most cafes I've been to serve. Definitely a great value! My favorite thing about this little establishments is the vibe between the service and the regular patrons. Call me a creep, but I love to people watch and listen about what others are talking about. You can tell nearly everyone coming in is a regular by the conversations. I think that even though all these cafes are very similar, they all have their own personality that differentiates them from one another, and I'm totally here for it.

So you're not going to go wrong with a steak. The prime rib here will put a smile on your face unless you have your heart set on gluten free tofu or something. They also have a friendly bar that is mostly locals but so long as you don't sit there with your big city snowflake attitude you'll find the folks at the next table or barstool to be friendly enough. I always enjoy reading the picky, whiny negative reviews over trivial complaints posted by these butthurt children. Want to know why the locals don't like you? Try not being so whiny. These ranchers, farmers and blue collar types work for a living at jobs you wouldn't last five minutes at. Have some respect. I like John Day. Not my favorite little burb in Eastern Oregon but it beats the pants off of downtown Portland. I also like the townies. Well, I tend to like anyone who has a weathered face and hands that have done real work but that's just me. As a Veteran I am always treated well out here. Seems like I'm always sitting next to some Marine at the bar who's eaten some of the same dirt that I did. If you want to be treated well by strangers, try being more respectful. You are in their playpen so park your attitude in the trunk of your Prius before you head inside. I'm already salivating over my next return trip for a real man meal here!

Only one person working dining rooms so service a little slow but she was very friendly and apologetic for wait. Food was ok..... Waitress didn't want to serve with rice and beans because they smelt bad. Salsa was very funky tasting so did not eat. Loaded French dip was very small but good. The chips are fresh to order and home made....very addictive. Guacamole was pretty good and also fresh made. So you def want to give them a try

That might well be true, but we never got that far. When it comes to politics in business, we live by a simple rule. Keep it to yourself, and it's none of our business to ask about it. Put it on some form of display, and if not too obnoxious, we might overlook it. We come to restaurants to eat, not to think about political stuff. Plaster it everywhere on the outside--thus washing our faces in it--and that's a big flipped bird at anyone who doesn't share those politics. They are perfectly entitled to their choice of decor, but in turn we are perfectly entitled to turn around and drive away. Nailing their colors to the mast is a choice, and it tells some customers that they are not welcome. One of two things is true: Either the owners are great with that, or they are unable to see the harm. A lot of money has probably flowed away from this place over the years for this reason, and it's not like the John Day community has a massive population base. Two stars because, while the presentation was so hideous it made us not want to support their business, we can't judge the food or service. But hey, if that's fine with them, duly noted.

My tour guide was a tall guy, unfortunately, I cannot remember his name. He was very informative about the museum and about the home. I felt sad at one point because the last person to own the home/business, went for a simple procedure and unfortunately passed away. You can still see the date he left on the calendar. The museum was very informative and some of the patient letters were very touching. This is a very nice gym within the small town of John date. Also, when you go into the reception center/gift shop you will see all of the items people have found in their yards that date back to the early 1900s. I highly recommend visiting the museum with a guided tour.

An important piece of Oregon and Chinese history, a must see!…read more I felt very fortunate to have visited the Kam Wah Chung Museum on my recent trip to Oregon. Seeing how the early Chinese settlers came to the US under harsh working environment, racial discrimination, language barriers and away from their families made me realized how resilient and strong of all these Chinese men. Being part Chinese and an immigrant myself, I could relate to some of their struggles. Located in John Day on the main street, this musem contains two parts. The first part is the museum with glass cased exhibits with illustration of early Chinese settlers and brief descriptions of the lives of Doc Hay and Lung On. The second part of the museum is only available as a guided tour, where you can enter the living quarter and pharmacy of Doc Hay and Lung On. I highly recommend taking the guided tour of the living quarter/pharmacy of Doc Hay and Lung On, as the staff tried to preserve all the original details back in its days. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, and she mentioned each single detail (down to mouse trap) in the house. The front of the house contains a red chair that Doc Hay would take your pulse and determine your health, with the pharmacy right behind his chair. We also saw Doc Hay's bedroom, common kitchen, sleeping quarters and Lung On's room. The most striking part of the tour was when guide mentioned how the Chinese settlers had to lock themselves in every evening to avoid getting shot by drunk white people. They also set up a water pump inside (vs. outside) of the house to avoid leaving the safety of the premise. Despite the harsh circumstances, I saw many posters on the walls of spending good time with friends and making huge fortunes. I admired their optimism and hard work under such extenuating circumstances. Overall, this is an important part of Oregon and Chinese history that you should definitely see. It is wonderful to see deliberate efforts are made to feature the contribution of minorities to the US history. It is also heartwarming and yet bittersweet to witness the obstacles our ancestors overcame to give better lives to future generations. Inspirational and highly recommend!
