It started as soon as I arrived: walking out of the airport to catch a tram, I blamed my lazy nature and language barrier, as well as the prompt arrival of the train car, but deep down I knew it wasn't so. Then I tried to pass it off as spite, blaming wasted effort and money for my future transgressions, though again I knew I was only fooling myself. Finally, it came to a head as I boarded the Pfannenstiel for a peacefully scenic cruise around lake Zurich; these shmoes don't check for tickets, and I am the bigger schmuck for buying not one, but two! I can't say it will always be so, but I have never seen a ticket taker during my 48 hours in this land of milk and honey. Philadelphia, Pa, of the USA, has a public transportation system that has taught me for decades that you don't pay unless forced, so I immedietley implemented that practice here in Zurich with no regrets. Actually, I have one regret- the first time I tried to take the polybahn (lift-car/escalator), we bought tickets valid for 10 minutes only from the machine by the door, only to find that it had stopped running for the day about 7 minutes prior. Enter aforementioned spite. Be advised, every bus, tram, boat, and lift that we took seemed to roll on the honor system, and we didn't make the same "polybahn" mistake twice. You would rather know about service? Well, those trams abound, going everywhere, and they run prompt and often. Did I mention the buses and such are "free"?

The robes, slippers, and in-room coffee were all great, and we were surprised with champagne and chocolates for our anniversary, which was a memorable gesture. The blackout blinds that closed by remote were a small but luxurious detail, and the front desk staff were welcoming throughout our stay. We really enjoyed the restaurant, SILK, located in the lobby. It's a cozy, romantic spot with soft lighting and excellent service. Our first dinner there was delicious ~ we had octopus, fish, and glasses of Chardonnay that paired perfectly. We returned on Sunday for a light meal of cheese, wine, and salad. The location is quiet and peaceful, away from the busy Old Town but very convenient to the beautiful walkway along the Lake. The rooftop terrace was a highlight with stunning sunset views. We would definitely stay here again!

I booked it as a Hilton Honors member and was first skeptical, as I didn't know much about it but this place went BEYOND my expectations in every way. The hotel was immaculate, staff were all very friendly, and the rooms felt like an upscale apartment and not even a hotel. Each floor is also themed with a different region of the world, such as France, Asia, England, etc, which was cool and it was done in a very tasteful way. Good quality amenities in the rooms and our room even came with robes - I was living my best wannabe luxurious European life!

The staff were very nice (excluding the small robot staff member who was not helpful, but an excellent dancer). Adequate air conditioning which was important and something I'd based selection on due to a medical issue for one of out travelers -- and glad I did since there was a mean heat wave during the trip. Great breakfast! I was concerned this was further from the central district than I'd anticipated - but no need for worry with multiple trains within 2-3 blocks leaving every few minutes. I'd stay here again over old city or central next time. Excellent vegetarian place on the same block with great buffet and aperol spritz!

It was great to have a extra cell for google maps during our visit. I have seen this perk before in japan and was very happy the hotel offered this! I was also able to book tours with the front desk and get around easily with the trains and transportation system in Switzerland - the best in the world!
