Supporting those businesses by purchasing grooming services conflicts with my personal beliefs - I won't get into these details here - so I began my search for a standalone pet salon. One of my friends in Happy Valley told me that her dog has been going to Hot Tails Salon for some time now, and is quite happy with their services. So I called them this past Saturday and they were able to squeeze in my Shar Pei Sasha just two hours later! Perfect timing. I wasn't prepared for all the cuteness that is Hot Tails Salon! I'd describe it as an adorable boutique - I love the black and white tile and the shelves are well-organized and loaded with all kinds of natural goodies for our furry friends. The grooming area is separated from the retail area for safety, but you're able to easily peer in. Nothing to hide here! After they're finished, they take photos of your dog and email them to you. Since it's almost Halloween, they staged a themed Halloween area replete with faux pumpkins, spider webs, and other kitschy paraphernalia. The two staffers I met were SO sweet with Sasha... petting him, playing with him, and just making us both feel so welcome. Their prices are on par with what the pet store groomers charge, so moving forward Sasha will only be getting his baths and nail trims at Hot Tails. Thanks for making feel Sasha feel so comfortable - and for making him smell so good!

However, in Hong Kong I was quoted prices ranging from $500 - $700 HKD ($65 - $90 USD). Obviously, being the frugal shopper I am I chose the shop offering grooming services at the low end of the price range. So Miss Pet II it was! Sasha was a bit skittish once we walked inside, as there's usually a few very confident (ahem, assertive) dogs hanging out in the store. I believe they're the owners dogs as we walk by the shop every day and they're definitely furry fixtures! After dropping Sasha off, I returned two hours later to find the best version of my pup: fluffy, soft, and fresh-smelling, with the tidiest nails. Though I'm still adjusting to Sasha's new grooming costs, I'll continue to stick with Miss Pet II unless I find a better deal.

The shop owner is extremely friendly and I appreciate that he recognizes me and knows my "food order" so to speak. He has also been helpful in the past in trying to connect me with a dog walker when we were in a bind, which certainly is above and beyond what he would need to do. Although pet products and services tend to be more expensive in Hong Kong than they were back in Washington, DC (I wistfully remember the days of ordering giant bags of all things dog on Amazon Prime), Miss Pet is quite reasonably priced for regular types of dog food (read: not organic or fancy), particularly if you buy in bulk. The resident dogs are fun and friendly, and I always enjoy spending some time petting them if I have to wait for a minute or two. Miss Pet II is definitely my go-to shop for pet supplies in Happy Valley.

However, I do get the need to provide for our animal brethren, and think that Whiskers N Paws is a great one stop shop for al your pet needs, providing they are cats or dogs. Located in Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau, Whiskers N Paws has a large store filled with all sorts of pet products, raging from the necessary foods, care products, bedding, through to more playful items like squeaky toys and exercise apparatus. The store is spacious and well laid out, so there is plenty of room to wander around, with pets and kids. As well as the store, there is a terrace and play area out the back for your pets to run around in and be sociable. It costs HKD60 per pet, but is nicely kept and a bit of a treat in the city. The terrace area also serves as a "showroom" for the numerous pet adoption days. Kirsten's Zoo runs a cat adoption day every 3rd Sunday of the month, and Hong Kong Dog Rescue runs a puppy day every Sunday. If you are thinking about getting a pet, I would thoroughly recommend these adoption days as a first port of call. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, but there don't seem to be very many around, so you may have to chase around a bit looking for help. The products are reasonably priced, and the range is plentiful. It's nice to be able to come to one big out of town store for everything, rather than numerous mom and pop stores in town.

If you're car-less (like me), there's no way you'd enjoy lugging a 15-pound bag of dog food across town on MTR unless you truly enjoy suffering and sweating profusely. But Whiskers N Paws delivers, and they do it for free - at least on HK island, though I'm not sure if there's a minimum spend. They also carry my Shar Pei's favorite brand of dog food, the Canadian brand Orijen. I was starting to worry that Sasha would have to switch to a different label after moving to HK, and as it turns out only a handful of retailers carry this premium brand. I was also able to scoop up some Earthbath shampoo and wipes (love this natural Californian brand!), a new bed while we await for the fancier one to arrive via shipping container, a banana toy with squeaker, and some premium freeze-dried treats. This may seem excessive, but my pup deserves all of this - and more - following a 15-hour flight! This store with a natural product bent also offers grooming services, pet care classes, and they host events such as adoption days. But get this: they've recently created a permanent cat homing station! This dedicated space shows off beautiful cats to potential feline parents. How's that for causing all the feels? I think that Sasha and I will soon need to make a field trip out of it and visit Whiskers N Paws! Thanks for carrying the first-rate products that Sasha enjoys so much, and for making them so accessible.

This shop makes me think that some think that human hair salons should have their tools in a nice display as well. All of the razors, combs, and brushes that they sell and use on dogs are behind a glass display like fine china! There are also porcelain pet figurines in the window and around the edge of the store. They, of course, do grooming in this shop and the prices are nicely displayed on a large board in English and Chinese. They have different prices for the different breeds of dogs. I was curious on pricing for my poodle, but I didn't see poodle anywhere. The prices were actually under miniature poodle for my pet, and were displayed neatly on the board according to the services provided. The teddy bear cut and style included ear cleaning, nails, clip, bathing and styling for $780 HKD. The summer clip was $750. I'm not completely sold on the whole poodle styling especially considering that my other dog is a mutt, that doesn't even need his hair clipped. However, if you are into having your four legged best friend look tip top, this is a good fit for you. The tools are available as well if you want to do the grooming yourself.

They carry a variety of pet supplies with a focus on natural grooming products. I was pretty impressed to see a large line of essential oils for dogs. I guess if they're good for people, they're good for animals too. I know that poodles have sensitive skin, so I'd love to find out what they recommend for my little Teddy. Dogroom also caters to smaller dogs. They have the cutest little doggy outfits, and assorted toys that are appropriate for the little guys. They also have a small assortment of travel bags so you safely and fashionably tuck them away. In addition to dog supplies, they offer grooming services at a reasonable rate. I don't think this is the place to take your dog if you're trying to win a competition, but they'll take good care of your pup in shop. There aren't too many holding cages in back which is always a positive sign to me. When shopping on Peace street for pet supplies, make Dogroom one of your stops.

We were unable to make it out to a cat cafe while we were in Japan, so we decided to make it up by…read morechecking out a cat cafe in Hong Kong. This is how we ended up at Cafe de Kitten in Mong Kok. First of all, Cafe de Kitten is pretty dang hard to find. Make sure that you realize that it is located on the 7th floor of the Pakpolee Commercial Centre. While searching for the Pakpolee Commercial Centre, you should also know that it's not going to have a large sign proclaiming its location. Instead, all you will is the words "Pakpolee Commercial Centre" written in tiny font over an unobtrusive door in the middle of a shopping block. Once you enter this door, you're greeted by two lines. Make sure you read the signs and stand in the line of the corresponding color, because with something like 25 floors (I think?), one elevator goes to the lower floors and one elevator goes to the higher floors, so make sure you don't get confused and take the wrong one, because trust me, the elevators here take FOREVER, and if you miss your floor, you're going to be waiting an extremely long time for the next available elevator. Now for Cafe de Kitten itself. We went in the early afternoon, and when we entered, there were already three other groups of patrons there. The space is fairly small, and a tad crowded. Also, despite there being three other groups there while we were there, it was super quiet, which I think added a little bit to the awkward atmosphere. Speaking no Cantonese (alas), we were a smidge confused about what to do, but we awkwardly sat down at a table. There's about four normal height tables in the establishment with three shorter tables that require you to sit on short stools. At each table, there's a bucket with some towels in it for kitties to rest in, if they so choose. An employee came over, handed us a menu, and informed us that we were required to buy a meal set in order to stay in the cafe. Even if you don't want to play with the kitties, you still are required to buy a meal set. I think they range from like 70-90 Hong Kong Dollars, which isn't terrible, but still something to be aware of. The food is all ordered from somewhere else, so it takes some time to arrive, but at the same time, it is somewhat comforting to know that they aren't preparing food in a place swarming with cats. There's a shelf with games, such as Jenga and UNO, that I think (?) you can take if you get bored and want to play something. The cats were all super sleepy when we were there, with the exception of one kitty, who was walking around a little bit. We spent a lot of time not really knowing what to do. There was a lot of awkward hovering over sleepy kitties and petting them. Despite the awkwardness and insecurity that resulted from the language barrier, with us speaking no Cantonese, and them speaking no English (at least that's how it seemed), I still enjoyed seeing and petting the cats. There wasn't much playing on my end, because the one active cat in the cafe was busy playing with another table (alas). tl;dr: If you love love love cats, I'm sure you'll have an excellent time here regardless. If you're not as big of a fan of cats, but are curious about the concept of cat cafes, I think it's still worth a look-see. Just don't get your hopes up for too much kitty interaction.

Located in the Ferry Street area of Jordon, its not too difficult to find. I would suggest getting off at Austin Station from the West Rail line instead of taking the MTR to Jordon. Few things I've noticed about this place is that here are pets here in crates all the time. The store pets don't seem to get any time outside of their crates, which makes me a bit upset. Dogs, Cats, Birds, they're all just trapped in their little crates watching the day pass. They offer a good range of dried and wet treats for your furry friends. I go with the Western goods that they carry such as Greenies and Zeal products. The prices are fair and they generally have a good stock of them at all times. I do commend the fact that they carry a good selection of dried dog food. Instead of heading to chaotic Mong Kok, pet street, This is a good alternative. From what I remember, they carry all the big names. If there is a product you are interested in that they do not carry, sometimes they will offer to order it for you. That is a good service, but its not always that they would do that for you. I give this place only three stars and not four because when my dog came for his normal grooming appointment one time, the experience wasn't good. They usually have very gentle staff handling the pets, but this time around, the lady taking care of my pup was a new. I kept an eye on her while she was grooming him, and while rinsing the shampoo off him, some shampoo got in his eye. I was worried but was told that the shampoo is very gentle and it there was no need to worry. Two days later, I notice discharge coming from his eye and brought him to the vet. Turns out, the shampoo made a small tear in his cornea and had given him an eye infection. I was gutted. I only hope they will train their staff more throughly to properly groom dogs.
