Came here for the first time to say farewell to a friend we've known for 48 years. He welcomed us when we lived in Hilo for 5 years and we spent many weekends, picnics, camping and fun in the snow on Mauna Kea too. The layout was perfect as the line to give condolences lasted more than the one hour viewing before the service. The front altar is beautiful. The area to offer incense next to the urn and wreaths were inconspicuous if you continue to shake hands or give hugs to the family. It was well ventilated so the incense smell was not noticeable. The suited mortuary employee kept track of time and asked people to find a seat several times so that the program could begin. The acoustics and lighting worked well for the slideshow and the reverend's chanting and lecture. No annoying feedback, equipment and program went smoothly for an hour. There was no seating afterwards just take a bento and bottled water and be on your way. read more

Why doesn't Lionel Messi get invited to any funerals? Probably because people are worried he'll try to dive in the box. That's a soccer *and* a funeral joke. Two-for-one. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the establishment in question does not in fact offer any two-for-one promotions. Anyway, I hope this review finds you well and I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for my being a child. Luckily, I've never had to work directly with Dodo Mortuary to coordinate a service for a loved one, but I've been to many, many services for friends and family that were held here over the years. It is always a very nice ceremony and you really do get the feeling that Dodo handles every service with the utmost respect for the family and guests. I know their services can be sort of pricey, but if you do value the type of closure that a very nice funeral can bring, then I think you would find it to be money well-spent. The interior is very nice, there's plenty of room for even a relatively large service, and the parking lot is very accommodating as well. There's also space outside if you'd like to have a meal for guests after the service, which is always nice for lifting spirits. 10/10 would recommend, on all fronts. read more

I know someone who once worked there & the comments that the girl makes about your love one is just out right disrespectful! This is a review of the Dodo Mortuary operation in Kona. My father died in December 2021 and our family met with their representative shortly thereafter. Over one month lapsed before dad's obituary appeared in the local newspaper; the representative attributed it to misplaced paperwork. By then it was too late to let people know that dad's final wishes did not include flowers and monetary gifts. My mom was therefore faced with the difficult task of returning gifts from well-meaning friends. read more

For our ohana, Dodo in Hilo dropped the ball. Twice. When they picked up my mother's remains, they said, "no worries, someone will call you. You don't need to do anything." No call for a week. I had to call them. They failed to inform the primary care physician of her death for two weeks, resulting in many uncomfortable calls from her health providers and the DOH certified death certificate being delayed. Mortuaries get one shot to make it easier for the bereaved family. Dodo didn't really put in the effort. read more

I would like to commend all of the staff here at Dodo Motuary. My family just held my late grandmother's Wake service here this past Friday & I am overwhelmed with how great the services were. There were a few specific things we requested of the staff last minute & they were able to deliver in a heartbeat, no questions, seamless, & went above and beyond. I come from a very large family of about 50+ members & many of us had questions & changes to make that evening & the staff was quick to respond & adjust. I felt bad for bugging them so much, but not once did they show any sign of annoyance. They genuinely cared about our concerns to make my grandmother's Wake & Funeral Services run perfect to our very high standards. They also supplied us with a box for cards, vases, linens, easels, pens, envelopes, free for our use. You can tell they are professionals in the industry because everything we needed they had & were generously able to help in anyway they can. Thank you again & again for all your hard work. I find it difficult to read the negativity for Dodo Mortuary because my family, and I mean my entire family, my whole life, had always done services with Dodo. I never knew Ballard Family Mortuary existed until the passing of my husband. In the most difficult time, you are in denial to the idea of them never returning. I waited over a week to make decisions being that my husband had to be released under investigation.Well long story short, I got a follow up call from Ballard Family Mortuary. I was told that he was the one who had picked my husband up and so forth. I expressed that I was unsure of the arrangements and I would call him back. Needless to say, my husband was not released by the hospital nor did I feel like talking to any mortuary. Anyhow, I receive another phone call, from the same mortuary, only this time, it's a female and she was following up on her husbands call. I was a bit confused, anyhow I spoke with her. For one, she was not knowledgeable at all. secondly she had lack of phone etiquette and lastly, no compassion what so ever. She later mentioned she was his administrative assistance, so I was even more confused. I did not know exactly what was going on. I expressed we wanted to have a service and possible cremation or burial to follow and this all depended on his appearance.She said they had a few different packages and they were cheaper then Dodo, however if I wanted to do a weekend, it would be $300 for that. I wanted to do a viewing she said they only did up to 15 people max for another $250.It gets better, she said beverages were included with the service, BUT if we wanted to bring food, we. needed to pay another $300 to use the sitting area. At this time, i'm in tears, I haven't gotten to the package price and it was almost $1000 bucks! Anyhow, I told her I would call back, I never did. Instead, I went shopping around(what other choice did I have) other then Dodo, if you think about the pros and cons, Dodo may be pricy but they are not ridiculous as Ballard Family Mortuary. The best part of it all they have larger parking space, air conditioned chapel, a large open covered pull in garage to load and unload and a overflow that extends the chapel. Whereas Ballard Family Mortuary have none of the above. Further more, I must compare that Dodo Mortuary would allow 100 people for a viewing vs 15 for a paid viewing, Dodo charges no weekend fee, Ballard is $300(really) what's to differ??? are we paying for what type of service because I would refuse to believe they have more accommodating services. On top of that, I have no idea what this means?? that they provide beverage services and I would need to pay for the sitting area if I provided my own food to serve with the beverages? $300 for exactly what? I have no idea. Dodo is under $200 if we had a full course meal served and Dodo is free of charge if we wanted to have beverages and light snack in their sitting area. Ballard would not accommodate it AT ALL! They are all about money and I see why because they have POOR ALL AROUND BUSINESS and PEOPLE WHO OPERATE THE BUSINESS. read more

I have a story to tell about DODO mortuary. Beware of doing business with them. We went to Dodo to help us with the passing of our beautiful daughter Kayleb Makalapua Horn. I figured they are a locally owned company who could be TRUSTED. But that's not true. We worked with Guadalupe. He seemed like he was nice and cared about us. But it was all FAKE. They charged us for funeral services when they knew specifically that we would be having her service in Waimea. He told us he would call as soon as she arrived and he didn't call til the day after. For the viewing of our baby, they told us we could have 10 people allowed there and ONLY 15 minutes to see her. The next day it changed to only 5 people allowed, 15 minutes with only viewing of her face. They charged us $300 for a 1 hour viewing but tried to charge us more depending on how many people we would have there. We moved her to Ballard. Ballard was AMAZING! They allowed us as much time as we needed, we were with her for two hours. Ballard looked at us as a grieving family, not as dollar bills. Total cost for Dodo was $2,400 and Ballard was $940.
