France has Cassoulet. Brazil double dog dares with Fejoada (fay-zzzhwa-dah)…read more I asked the hotel receptionist where to go for Fejoada. She pointed me to Bolinha. It is the weekend and the ubiquitous Brazilian dish is their signature buffet. So everything came to the table! The 10 cuts of meat include bacon, pork chop, oxtail, pig ear, beef tongue, linguica, brisket, ham hock, and pork knuckles. The broth is brimming with collagen--so they offer salsa, hot sauce, and fresh orange slices to resuscitate your palette. Thicken the broth with toasted nut flour if you wish. There's fried sweet banana and yucca, pork rinds and crispy bacon on the side, perfect rice and shredded collard greens. Assuage your guilt with shots of house caipirinha. Think a sweeter margarita on the rocks... The very patient and sweet maitre'd offered me dessert. He's thinks he is so funny! While I have no reference to compare this example to others as it was my first taste of Fejoada, the standard is set immensely high. Not cheap at R150 total bill ($40). But this memory has been seared indelibly into my food coma'd brain. And now I understand why they have such a light dinner. Time for a siesta to recover. !!! Bring a translator (Google translate is pretty good) if you don't speak Portuguese. Inhouse WiFi available.

First off, this is legit Thai. The dishes are authentic and delicious. They have wonderful cocktails. They have lots of vegetarian options!!! We frequented this restaurant several time during our stay in Brasil. The food was always delicious, though the service would range from fabulous to nonexistent. A few times my veggie tom kha soup had to be sent back because it arrived with chicken in it. (And trust me, we ordered in Portuguese.) However, despite the occasional mistakes, and the occasional rude server, we still loved the restaurant. They have great lunch specials as well! A must try if you love Thai.

The experience was nice but nothing special. My husband and I decided to go back this weekend so I could determine if maybe it was just the chef that night that didn't deliver what was expected. Honestly the environment is so relaxing it's hard not to want to dine here. We tried to order the lamb curry and they "were out". We thought okay this is opportunity to order some completely different plates. We ordered the duck curry and efu noodles. The food arrived and the curry looked and smelled delicious, as soon as we took our first bite we both agreed it was lacking that tangy kick , it had the spice but nothing else, barely even any flavor. We were surprised because it smelled so good! We asked for lime and salt to add ourselves which made it much better. The noodles were so so and overall I was a disappointed and we probably won't be coming back but I will say the restaurant is beautiful, relaxing, and romantic and the staff is very warm and helpful. They just need to get a chef that contributes to the wonderful setup they have there.

While all those people congregate outside waiting for their table, I head to Empório São João. This unassuming, but perfectly adorable café is home to my favorite chicken milanesa. Often, you'll find the chicken dried up after having been lightly fried, but not the São João milanesa - theirs is always moist and cooked to perfection. Then the zesty lemon risotto that gets served alongside the chicken is equally excellent. Another thing I love at SJ is the soup buffet at night. This soup array may not happen always, but I found myself going back for bowls of their homemade varieties, of which there were about 5 to choose from. For lunch or dinner, SJ has consistently satisfied and their passion fruit caipirinha is definitely one of the best I've had. If you get Elton as a server, you're in luck - he's an absolute gem!

Find a friend, split the milanesa de frango com risotto ao limone (chicken milanesa with lemon risotto) and pair it with a trip to the salad bar. This way you'll get your veggies and more than enough of the indulgent stuff too. Don't miss the toasted garlic bits at the salad bar, they really made the salad for me. Empório São João has many lunch options from quiches to veggie burgers and pastas. Something for everyone? Our group of seven seemed satisfied! Now I need to figure out a way to come back for dinner so I can try the soup buffet...

This neighborhood spot in Vila Madalena doesn't look like much from the outside, and its modest interior also might not suggest the amazing fish that awaits, but let it be known, Tanuki is the best I've ever had. We saddled up to the sushi bar while 4 expert sushi makers handled each fish with delicate care; I loved getting a front row seat to the beautiful display of filets. We ordered sake, miso soups (drink it from the bowl, not with a spoon), and the Combinado de Sushi e Sashimi Individual platter (despite having no idea what fish would arrive, we found the order to be spot on). 18 pieces came out of which 10 were sashimi (mixed between salmon, tuna and another fish), 4 nigiri (salmon, tuna and a white fish), and 4 uramaki (salmon on the inside and rice on the outside with sesame seeds). After our eyes rolled back into our skulls (from being so blown away by the first bite), we added another 8 uramaki rolls (tuna) to the order. If you're looking for something safe, you should just copy our order and if you don't speak Portuguese, ask for the English menu! The fish was so freaking fresh it didn't have that fishy taste you often associate with, well, fish. It was tremendous. I also don't typically like salmon and I managed to scarf down every piece that was presented to me... and then want more. Other things to note: this place is small so might not be best for a large group (or perhaps call ahead) and we arrived without reservations and were easily able to grab 2 seats at the bar around 8:30pm. As for the meal, Jiro, you have your work cut out for you!

While I've yet to be blown away, this evening's visit to Le Jazz - a French bistro that features all the trimmings you'd expect at a cozy franco café - was perfectly solid. The wall is dotted with a mix of vintage concert posters from blues and jazz greats to black and white images of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and their cohorts. We found a solid wine and cocktail menu (we went with a garrafa -- 375ml bottle -- of Chilean Carménère) and a really terrific food menu. The Le Jazz salad was fantastic. Slices of pear punctuated by crumbles of gorgonzola and matched with crisp lettuce and bits of bacon. It was the first salad I've had that made me feel like home. The large size was big enough to split between 2 people and that's just what we did. The next (and final) dish was L'Entrecôte (a rib eye cut of steak paired with hand-cut fries and a small salad). The server never asked how I'd like it prepared (medium-rare), but the steak came cooked just that way. After 8:30pm, the rest of the neighborhood stops by and you're likely to catch a minimal wait time. Next time, I'll have to try the dessert.

Le Jazz was one of the first places my friends took me when I landed in SP. Since then, the region has exploded with great lunch and dinner spots to service the growth in traffic at the nearby metro. Despite the increased competition Le Jazz is still going strong. On my most recent visit I came with a small group that had a craving for Duck A L'Orange. The tangerine twist of Le Jazz' Magret Canard did not disappoint and came with a delicious side of creamy potatoes to maximize the use of that delicious duck sauce. Also on deck and enjoyed by all were classic tartines, onion soup and creme brûlée. The Entrecôte was voted best dish of the night, and the mussels, while a bit on the heavy side (way too much cream) for my taste, were happily devoured to the last dip of a fry in oniony sauce. I still recommend this place heartily for a fun night of traditional French fare. Great for small groups with options for vegetarians as well (vegans beware the cream and cheese abounds, yum).
